2181  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Betting strategy question on: December 30, 2022, 12:48:15 PM

Just an update for those interested. I knew there must've been some formula for determining bet size and I wasn't wrong. The good old Kelly Criterion could be helpful here (something I completely forgot about) and the formula goes:

f = p-(q/b)

f - is the fraction of the current bankroll to wager.
p - is the probability of a win.
q - is the probability of a loss (q=1-p).
b - is the proportion of the bet gained with a win

So in this case:

f = 0.17 - (0.83/11) = 9.5% of the bankroll

That's much lower than I expected. And of course, applying Kelly Strategy is not a guarantee of making a profit, and the strategy is designed to do better than other strategies in the long run, so not necessarily the best way of determining a single, non-occurring bet.
2182  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: 📝[Discussion topic] Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns📝 on: December 30, 2022, 12:50:08 AM
What's the current consensus on participants applying for spots in multiple campaigns at the same time?

Is it frowned upon or acceptable?

I could argue both ways:
From the managers' perspective - it's probably a major inconvenience if accepted participants are actually not interested as they went with a different campaign.
From the participants' perspective - applying for one at a time could mean available spots in other campaigns can run out while they're patiently waiting for a response from campaign manager (which can take ages, or they could not respond at all) - which also doesn't sound very fair.

Thoughts?

Looks like the Hunnyplay campaign was re-launched with updated payment rates. That's a significant pay cut compared to original rates, but still quite decent.
As per the description, it's OFNP but only if some of the currently accepted participants decide to leave. Edit - it's now CFNP.

Source:

Please pay attention!
Hunnyplay team decided to adjust the per post reward until they integrate their btc payment system. It's also testing and tweaking the advertising budget to sustain long term too. If you agree with the new payment system then please post your current post number (for the current participants) and new applications will be considered too if any of our current participants decides to leave the campaign.

It means, the campaign is OPEN to fill all the slots it currently has.
Good luck.

Hello, what platform do you recommend to do copy trading that you can start investing with less than 100 dollars? I understand that most platforms require a minimum of 100 to do copytrading, right?
are there any other options besides bingx to start with less than 100?
And some tips to choose the best traders?

Not to sound rude or anything, but if you can't scrape together a $100 maybe you shouldn't be thinking about investing just yet and instead focus on developing skills to increase your earning potential. Just saying.

That being said, I think eToro allows deposits of less than $100, I think the minimum was $10 (depending on your location and deposit method) but not sure - but might be worth checking. And remember that majority of traders on such platforms would lose money.
2187  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What if the government of a country is irresponsible? on: December 28, 2022, 07:07:31 PM
I don't see this as being irresponsible. El Salvador has added bitcoins to their balance sheet for a couple of years now and other countries doing so would only make Bitcoin more popular among their citizens and grow adoption.

I wouldn't necessarily put this one up as a good example. I have some sympathy for Bukele, but so far, the decision to purchase bitcoins at an average price of around $31k was not a good decision. He would get praise if bitcoin shot up, so, on the same token, he should be to blame if the bitcoin price takes an adverse direction.

There's a big difference between having the balls to take risks with your own funds and wealth and risking someone elses' funds (aka taxpayers' money) pretty much without any responsibility in case of loss.
2188  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Betting strategy question on: December 28, 2022, 06:26:52 PM
...

I think by asking if somebody should take the bet in your hypothetical scenario, it misses the point of why we should take spots that are +EV.  It wouldn't really matter if you're just allowed to be in a +EV spot just once then nothing.  It's all about the long run and taking on enough of these spots to make some profit.

But if you're just asking for the sake of asking..?  Sure, why not, it's like a value bet for a mispriced underdog spot in sports betting.

Not sure if I understand you correctly. Of course it does matter (a lot) if you only have one opportunity of making a single +EV bet. If you could do it multiple times then it's a no brainer - absolutely everyone would take such chance.

But when there's no guarantee that similar opportunities will ever arise - that's a whole different story, after all, you are still more likely to lose than to win, so there's also a logic behind not taking that bet.

As mentioned in the posts above - I'd be definitely in favour of taking a bet, but not sure what would be the most sensible approach in determining the right stake for it (or for mispriced underdogs in sports bets).
2189  Economy / Gambling / Re: Stake.com - The Leading Crypto Casino - 🦉 Drake, UFC, Everton Main Partner ⚽ 🥊 on: December 28, 2022, 09:42:48 AM
Quick question - does the affiliate program also work for UK sign ups? They would sign up to Stake.uk.com rather than Stake.com, which doesn't seem to support cryptocurrencies at all, doesn't have an affiliate program, and credentials from "uk.com" do not work on ".com" site, so almost looks like they're separate sites.
2190  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BlockFi Bankruptcy - Creditors Thread – Updates & Help -Lets get some funds back on: December 28, 2022, 12:26:16 AM

...

I just made my bets on this 4 games, and fortunately I was able to hit each and every one of them and walked aways with some serious profit!

Pretty impressive, not gonna lie. Well done, enjoy your winnings.
Do you make such predictions regularly (I got back on this forum after a long break, so am a bit out of the loop)? If so, it might be worth looking out for them.
2192  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Betting strategy question on: December 27, 2022, 11:56:37 PM
Why wouldn't anyone say no to this bet? It's still 83% chance of losing the money wagered and you can't bet more than once, as stated by OP.

I would say yes only in case I could bet multiple times with the same terms (x12 profit) mentioned on this thread, applying bankroll management strategy and martingale.

If the payout was x1 million then I'm sure you'd bet at least $1 despite 83% chance of losing, right? Smiley
I'd say it would be a shame not to take advantage of the positive EV opportunity, it's just a matter of choosing the appropriate stake.

And even though, in this scenario, you can only roll once - making decisions based on cold, mathematical analysis rather than giving in to unreasonable risk aversion should make a positive impact on your wealth long-term (be it gambling or other aspects of life).
2193  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Betting strategy question on: December 27, 2022, 07:22:02 PM
...
No one would really say no to this kind of bet. As long as the casino has provided positive feedbacks from previous players playing this kind of game, then I would also do the same and take the risk in betting. And the more bets I have to make, the more chances of winning. But no matter how it’s very tempting, I will also make sure that I will only bet the amount which I can afford to lose.

Obviously don't expect to see any such offer in any casino, but real-life examples close to that scenario would be i.e. incorrectly determined odds in sports betting. I think we can find it most often in MMA betting when some underdogs are given way too little chance of winning (therefore better payout rates). So the question is, what's the best method to determine the stake if you spot such opportunity.
2194  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: BOXING DAY PREDICTIONS on: December 26, 2022, 11:10:23 AM
This year'$ Christmas festivity was awesome. I really enjoyed it. And I am going to enjoy the aftermath of the Christmas which will lead to the boxing day. Well boxing is an another unpredictable sport or game. So I won't say Middlesbrough  will win Wigan and also I can't say WWW (Wigan will win) the match.

For Rotherham vs Stoke. Stoke is a good boxer but let see how it going to be. Sunderland vs Blackburn and Brentford vs Tottenham these two matches will be an another tough matches in the night.

You're taking spamming to the next level sir Smiley

"Boxing day" is a 2nd day of Christmas and a public holiday in the UK. It's got nothing to do with boxing, the sport.
OP is discussing football matches, it's not hard to figure out if you actually read the post.

But I'm glad you can appreciate the boxing skills of Stoke lol
2195  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Betting strategy question on: December 25, 2022, 11:29:43 PM
It’s definitely going to be a good decision to go with the bet since the results that you could get is better than the risk you are going to take so I think it boils down into the risk management on how much you are going to bet, but as long as you are ready to lose that kind of money, then it’s best to take it.

Agree, not taking advantage of positive EV is irrational. So it boils down to how to determine a reasonable stake for such bet.
Probably a good rule of thumb would be, for a bet with 17% chance of winning, to not risk more than 17% of available funds. But that's an oversimplified approach.

...
For me your calculations are wrong, because it's not the EV of a x12 payout, but the EV of a x13 one. When you play at a normal dice, hi-lo or coin toss game you say you're paid out x2 if you win, you don't say you are paid "x1", and EV is the sum of your excepted winnings minus the sum of your expected losses, then for me the EV of a x12 payout game is :

EV = (83% x -BTC1) + (17% x +BTC11) = +BTC1.04 because if you win you get +11BTC not +12.

...

Good spot. I've corrected the calculation in the OP. Thanks for pointing this out.

2196  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BlockFi Bankruptcy - Creditors Thread – Updates & Help -Lets get some funds back on: December 25, 2022, 01:06:54 PM
Some updates from BlockFi:

Quote
Today, we took an important step toward our goal of returning assets to clients through our chapter 11 cases. It is our belief that clients unambiguously own the digital assets in their BlockFi Wallet Accounts. As such, we filed a motion requesting authority from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to allow clients to withdraw digital assets that are held in their BlockFi Wallet Accounts. We will be seeking similar relief from the Supreme Court of Bermuda with respect to BlockFi Wallet Accounts held at BlockFi International Ltd. This motion does not impact withdrawals or transfers from BlockFi Interest Accounts, which remain paused at this time.

In order to facilitate withdrawals from BlockFi Wallet Accounts, we also requested permission to update the User Interface to properly reflect transactions as of the platform pause on November 10, 2022 at 8:15 p.m. (prevailing Eastern Time). This is a necessary step towards ensuring all clients are treated fairly and that the User Interface properly reflects the digital assets in Wallet Accounts as of the pause so BlockFi can honor all withdrawal requests from Wallet Accounts properly if authorized by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court and, with respect to BlockFi International Ltd., the Supreme Court of Bermuda.

While filing this motion is an initial step, we will continue to work towards solutions that maximize value for all clients and other stakeholders and will share updates as quickly as practicable.

We are looking forward to discussing this motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court and key parties in our cases, and expeditiously moving towards a path that returns Wallet Accounts assets to clients. We expect that our request will be heard by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court at our hearing currently scheduled for January 9, 2023, at 10:00am ET. We expect that our request for similar relief with respect to BlockFi International Ltd. will be first heard before the Supreme Court of Bermuda at our hearing currently scheduled for January 13, 2023 at 10:30am AST and then scheduled for a full hearing after that on a date to be fixed.

Additional information regarding our chapter 11 cases, including court documents and claim information, can be found by visiting BlockFi’s claims agent Kroll at https://restructuring.ra.kroll.com/blockfi.Clients with questions about the process may call Kroll at (888) 773-0375 (Toll Free) or (646) 440-4371 (International), or email1 blockfiinfo@ra.kroll.com.

BlockFi

As per the embolden part - this would be great news for those who held their funds in "wallet" accounts, but I don't think the court would allow this, as it would be simply unfair to other users who held their funds in "interest" accounts (and other creditors). So I wouldn't get my hopes too high for this one.
2197  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Betting strategy question on: December 25, 2022, 12:52:58 PM
I you knew if was legit and on a site you regularly visit, I doubt anyone would be saying no.
...

You'd be surprised. A lot of people (especially women) are unreasonably risk-averse.
In this case though - you're still most likely to lose money than win, so not taking such bet at all would be fairly reasonable IMO.

If it were me, I'd consider anything up to a third of what you could afford to lose
...

Fair enough, but is there any reason you would risk max. third of your funds (not more or less)?
What I'm trying to figure out is to see if there's any reasonable/mathematical approach to making such decision.

I would allocate 10% or 1/10 of my bankroll to stake for every roll, this way I will have 10 tries to get a win and hope for that 10 tries can hit 1 for a profit.  Grin

As in OP, you can only roll once. Still taking it?

Well, since it's a single event then all the calculations you present do not apply because they assume long term, multiple shots, that's when the probabilities make sense.
...

This is how you calculate EV. Positive EV doesn't mean you're guaranteed to win.
