241  Other / Meta / Re: im still Newbie on: January 16, 2019, 10:27:20 PM
i got Posts:39 and Activity:   39 still Newbie, when i will update to jr. member?

As soon as you start making posts that:
  • Are interesting enough for people to actually give you any merit (they have to be original to)
  • Are posted in the correct subforum (not like this post)
Unfortunately, for newbies, who are fishing for some merit, this is the correct subforum (they think)...
At the first time, newbies just asked how to get merit in Meta and they had been given, so maybe they saw this or heard about it before...

just a, maybe stupid, question but how do you find out these correlation between accounts?
Id there are ones.
Just interested in general and not related to this issue.
...
You know the Sherlock film: "The Hounds of Baskervilles"? [1]
"Oh, Mr. Holmes, I would love to tell you, but then, of course, I'd have to kill you." Cheesy

We just can't tell all the secrets of finding links between individual user IDs openly, because if we write it here, all the spammers and scammers will read them too and they will care about those little things that are now linking together their accounts...

...
One thing to take into consideration is that most newly created accounts stay as Brand New (i.e. with no associated posts), so the 23K accounts created last month are operatively many less in terms of actual posting accounts. Back in November I drew up some data related to created accounts and year of last activity (see Analysis - Bitcointalk Accounts – Date of Register vs Last Active per Rank).

If I summarize the data for 2018 we’ve got:
        895.158 created accounts in 2018 (*)
680.255 were, at the time(*) still Brand New

That is to say, 76% of newly created accounts in 2018(*) do not post. Taking that on to the 21K new accounts created last month, and assuming that they maintain the same behavioural trend, that would leave around 4.200 of those accounts that do post at some point or other.

(*) Up until the first week of November 2018.

There's something with brand new members, if they don't post for 3 months (?) they are locked or banned? I've read something similar somewhere.
Why not just make this period much shorter, e.g. 1 week?

To read the forum, before someone wants to post/ask something is possible without an account, so there's no need to create a brand new account for someone, who wants only to read.

What would happen to the rest:
Normal members will start to post and start to rank up if they post decent content.

Farmers will continue to create their farmed accounts, but:
-they will realize that they had to post somewhere at least one post in order to save the new accounts from deletion
-hopefully they will create a topic in Off topic or in Archive where they can do this one post thing for their accounts
-hopefully somebody sometime will find these topics and will ban the farmed accounts because of meaningless posts or something similar...

This will not solve the bot problem, but at least will make it harder for the farmers to farm and to bump
244  Other / Meta / Re: Should we put a merit/post ratio? Like torrent site on: January 15, 2019, 08:10:13 PM
This suggestion from o_e_l_e_o

A suggestion I did see in another thread, which I would prefer over this one but has a similar outcome, is charging users 1 earned merit per activity period (2 weeks) to display a signature. If they run out of earned merit, they lose their signature until they earn more.
...

I quite like the idea of diminishing sig spamming by restricting signatures to people managing to acquire merit. Do anyone see a problem with that? It would at least reduce spam while allowing anyone who just wants to talk do it.
I like o_e_l_e_o's proposal a bit better, but with more time allowed (e.g. 3 activity period at least) to earn that merit, because if you're on a holiday or have something to do in real life for a while, you should not lose your merits because of inactivity.
Or, if we count only those activity periods, when the user has posted at least 1 post. This would not burn the acquired merits if someone is inactive.
245  Other / Meta / Re: How many topics will Jet Cash start in Meta in 2019? on: January 13, 2019, 09:15:50 AM
Already 4 in 2019 so far.

...
May be this post will give him an inspiration to break his own record this year?
Anyway, those topics are much better than the daily 3-5 topics from copypasters about:

"why I was banned, I'm innocent, I haven't plagiarized anything for sure", etc. kind of topics....

PS:
Have you taken a look at the Ivory Tower as well? Tongue
246  Other / Meta / Re: Reason of my ban on: January 12, 2019, 10:06:55 AM
If you check in the modlog https://bitcointalk.org/modlog.php, your user ID is included:
Code:
Autoban user: N/A in topic #0 by member #954930
Usually it's because of plagiarism.
I've checked the reporting thread of plagiarism, but it seems that someone has not reported you there but just reported your post to a moderator which means only the mod can give you proper answer for the reason of your ban.
247  Other / Meta / Re: [Graph] Mass Member creation with Legendary account bms2013 (hacked?) on: January 11, 2019, 10:42:21 PM
Does it worth a try to check the Members, (who received the 10 merits per each), where they have forwarded their 5 sMerit they had after receiving the 10 merit? Maybe it can lead to other farmed accounts...
248  Other / Meta / Re: Banned. Why? on: January 08, 2019, 10:55:36 PM
...
Account link - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1192282

Is this ban permanent?
...
I've checked the modlog for you, I've found your UID:
Code:
Autoban user: N/A in topic #0 by member #1192282
So it seems permanent.
I don't know the reason, I haven't searched for it, but you can also check in your mailbox, you should have received a mail with the details.
249  Other / Meta / Re: Why my topic was removed? on: January 08, 2019, 08:41:08 PM
This topic was discussed 100 time or even more.
If someone can use the search function of the forum, it's easy to find them, and those topics are full of posts, so I think most of the possible variations are covered already.
If the search function of the forum is complicated, google it with adding "/site:bitcointalk.org" after the keyword, this will do the trick...
TLDR: There's no need for this topic for the 101st time again...
250  Other / Meta / Re: [RELEASED] @mention notification bot - now with Telegram on: January 07, 2019, 10:48:46 PM
...
I just warn the developer that the logic of the tool can lead to a ban of the bot.
...
Developer has managed to upgrade the bot, so it will stay in Archive, job done, so now we can turn the page. I wish that every upgrade could be done this fast in any code...

...
I just made the change now, i'm checking that everything still works correctly and the filtering (of notifications in thread which are not in the Archival board) happen.
...
piggy

Edit: seems to be behaving correctly  Smiley

If your thread is not under Archival, your are not going to receive notification anymore, please make the necessary changes
251  Other / Meta / Re: Full Member, 1.5 years history, what did I do wrong all of a sudden? on: January 07, 2019, 04:42:07 PM
Nice catch mate,  was this done manually or automatically through a bot?

It wasn't me who reported him, probably suchmoon. All I did is check a few posts made in June and July (manually), this one stood out and I got a match.
That's a good practice ( Smiley ) to check for outstanding posts.
I usually start from the really first post of the member and you can find really strange things from the time when the member was a newbie, usually there are posts with different language, before it changes to english speaking one-liners...
And if you find some longer posts between those one-liners, now those worth a check. So basically you don't need to read thru all the posts of a member, just check those that are different. You'll see that those posts are usually a catch, so you can be more effective.
But everyone has his/her own know-how for this job I guess Smiley
252  Other / Meta / Re: [RELEASED] @mention notification bot - now with Telegram on: January 06, 2019, 02:26:47 PM
Again your bot spamming on the forum. For which purposes you send notifications about replies in thread B to thread A?

Read the OP.

This is a tool. Everyone can use it. The maker of the tool is hardly to blame for misuse. The user is. Please move on, or contact the specific user. Since he is using the bot you can get his attention by just mentionning his nick.

This tool uses a forum account and violates the rules. Read the rules.

If you feel that this is against the rules, you don't need to post anything here, just use the report to the moderator button. Mods will dedice if it's against the rules or not. That's all. You'll see in your report history if they mark your report good or bad, so you won't even need to come back to this topic to check the outcome.
253  Other / Meta / Re: [LIST] Banned users - [TAG] Banned users on: January 06, 2019, 12:15:50 PM
Is adding "banned" status on banned member requires a lot of coding? If not, can theymos enable it? Or why don't he enable it already?
Not sure if this has been discussed before, I don't visit meta frequently and too lazy to search :/

Just imagine, if all the banned users would have a red "BANNED" text instead of the current rank...
The altcoin section would turn entirely red because of this Smiley I'm sure theymos don't want this, it would be really bad for the forum's reputation to see that banned users are discussing pages long....
It would be much less noticeable to just remove the 'Report to moderator' button for the banned ones and that won't disturb anybody, just help those who report posts... I'm not sure if this will be implemented anytime, but...
Hope springs eternal...
254  Other / Meta / Re: What to do about Bump Bots on: January 05, 2019, 06:57:42 PM
Also, what would be a big big advantage for reporters (and has been discussed/proposed many times before) to just hide the 'Report to moderator' button for the post that has been reported already...
This won't be noticed by the majority of the members but would help those who report...
255  Other / Meta / Re: [ask] Account names very ironic. on: January 05, 2019, 06:47:50 PM
Or maybe they were registered by the forum staff in order to stop scammers registering misleading account nicks (because most of them are Brand new or newbie, so this is possible)
256  Economy / Reputation / Re: [self-moderated] Report to Merit Source on: January 05, 2019, 06:31:52 PM
...
I'd be very happy if this thread becomes as big as my Report plagiarism thread.
Also, we should check those meritable posts applying here if they are copypaste or not...
Unfortunately, most of the posts from newbies seems to deserve merit are usually copypasta...
257  Local / Other languages/locations / Re: Magyar (Hungarian) on: January 05, 2019, 12:22:17 PM
Te használni Google Translate?
It would be better to communicate your offer in English.

Sziasztok!!

258  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk mass hacking... Look at seclog now! on: January 04, 2019, 10:26:19 PM
I further modified seclog.php so that by default newbies & brand-new members are hidden unless they are whitelisted, copper member, etc.
Whitelisted means you click on the Show All link at the beginning of the Seclog, or this is something new for newbies and brand new members?
259  Other / Meta / Re: Report plagiarism (copy/pasting) here. Calling for Mod action: please permban on: January 03, 2019, 08:47:04 PM
Have you managed to find someone who have copypasted something that has already been plagiarised from somewhere else? Cheesy
Eg. user MOBbrothers
The copypaste post
Archive
The source can be found on Steemit:
https://steemit.com/eth/@michaelangello/our-future-technology-may-rely-on-blockchain-and-cryptocurrency?sort=trending

But:
The original article (from where the steemit guy has plagiarized and rephrased it) can be found on Linkedin and on Medium.

You just cannot be cautious enough to find from where to copypaste Cheesy
260  Other / Meta / Re: A different approach to solving the sig spamming problem. on: January 03, 2019, 03:51:39 PM
Don't you guys think that signature campaigns are good for bitcoin adoption?
...
For sure. Bitcoin campaigns are OK. But:
Unfortunately there are way much more ICO/ANN/bounty etc. campaings out there (where you get your 'salary' in altcoin/token/other worthless thing and not in bitcoin) which don't help bitcoin at all.
Of course, people have to exchange these crapcoins to Bitcoin and the Bitcoin to fiat if they want to make a living out of it, but in this case the Bitcoin just appears on the exchange, which doesn't help the adoption but only the exchanges...
