401  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM (XEM) Official Thread - 100% New Code - Easy To Use APIs on: March 02, 2017, 10:09:24 PM

Interesting.  I particularly like the part below, seems like NEM is now getting the much wider recognition it deserves:

Tech Bureau’s NEM Blockchain has also been utilized in creating administrative services in the past, where the Apostille tool within NEM was used to create “Landstead,” a land and property registry. Interestingly, the project was part of a hackathon and was undertaken in a span of just one week.

“Japan has been a world-renowned exporter of technology for decades. It is interesting to see that the country is now taking lead in the Blockchain space as well.”

We have already covered Tech Bureau’s efforts to create a point system with Hitachi recently using Mijin. Now Mijin is also getting positive attention from other countries like US, Thailand, Laos, Korea, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

If Japanese Blockchain technology can be used to simplify administrative processes securely, it will surely take some sting out of the long-drawn bureaucratic process and make life easier for weary citizens of many countries who are burdened with civic processes that are expensive, cumbersome and involve the gauntlet of collecting stamps and signatures.

I think this also demonstrates that Japan is at the forefront of blockchain technology (Bitcoin was started in Japan remember!)
So naturally NEM emerging out of Japan seems logical.

Their devs are very talented...   Smiley

Also very exciting to see alot of exposure on Coin Telegraph!

I think its very exciting that we are all part of something that is going to go down in history as a huge breakthrough.
402  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: XEM's 'Proof of Importance' is Pagerank Fused With Proof-of-Stake on: March 02, 2017, 05:29:22 AM
I am curious about this coin. I hardly see it discussed probably because it is a 100% ICO like a shitcoin would be and no miners for it shorts discussion on here.

I do want to know more about what makes this good. Stuff I read is it is original code rather than a fork but I do not understand this PoI stuff.

I can tell you that NEM is not 100% an ICO like you think.

Many people received a free stake just for simply posting in the ANN thread.

Code is original, it was intended to be based on NXT at the beginning, but they decided to start with a 100% new code base.

TBH, NEM has far exceeded my expectations and I never for one ever imagined it would be where it is now.

PoI is basically PoS with a few improvements that also take into account how active a particular node is on the network, rather than just the account balance of any particular account.

TBH, this is not even what makes NEM special, every coin out there seems to generate a whole lot of hype about their "special" staking algorithms etc, but NEM does not make any such claims.

NEM on the other hand is a rock solid platform that has not been hyped up by a whole lot of hot air.
Its performance simply speaks for itself and delivers on how it performs rather than what promises many devs claim about the 99% of shitcoins out there.

If you are looking for something that is rock solid, scalable, fast, secure and reliable than NEM is your answer.

The pitfalls of BTC, ETH and the majority of other copycat shitcoins are evident.

There are only a handful of projects that have a unique approach that are up to the task.

Its still in the early days of crypto adoption, but NEM has a very bright future and there are serious partnerships underway that will benefit crypto as a whole.
403  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NEM's 'Proof of Importance' is Pagerank Fused With Proof-of-Stake on: March 02, 2017, 12:26:19 AM
I had also written else where:

The reputation/rank aspect is just proof-of-stake in transactions. It has the same properties of proof-of-stake wherein your stake determines how much rank you realistically have (and not just lose it all to transaction fees).

Also since it requires the transaction graph, then it is incompatible with privacy and anonymity.

I don't understand why everyone is so excited about NEM. It is just a rehash of PoS. Where is the innovation?

There is SERIOUSLY alot more to NEM than POI!  Roll Eyes

I understand more or less what proof of importance is. It takes into accounts the number of coins (similar to proof of stake)  but the importance part is unclear to me, how as a XEM holder would get importance to the network if I'm not sending XEM out to others, I mean I'm only buying XEM to my desktop wallet hehe. I have a brother, does that mean that if i send xem to him and he send xem back to me we would get more importance to the network? doesn't make sense.  my score is above 1.14%

I dont think it makes a huge difference, but it may change when the network gets more transactions going through.

Mine has been hovering just under 3% since day 1.
406  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM (XEM) Official Thread - 100% New Code - Easy To Use APIs on: February 28, 2017, 09:48:23 PM
All my harvested blocks are empty, just a few of them has some XEM. When is going the time when all the blocks contains a considerable amount of xem.

With mainstream adoption  Grin

And I expect that when this happens, you wont need to worry about needing to run a supernode if  you have a high enough importance as the harvesting will be much greater with more transactions going through the network. Cheesy

Good read!  More and more exposure for NEM ...

"One advantage Tech Bureau and Hitachi has over its competitors in the global Blockchain market is that the Japanese government and its Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry are in full support of Hitachi’s vision of utilizing Blockchain technology to optimize its point management solution."

This is BIG news!

R3 Admits Defeat, Stops Blockchain Development

R3CEV, the largest blockchain consortium of banks and technology firms includng multi-billion dollar institutions such as Barclays, Credit Suisse, Bank of America, Citibank and HSBC, officially admitted defeat and moved on from blockchain technology development.

Over the past two years, various consortia and bank-funded blockchain startups raised billions of dollars to utilize blockchain technology in optimizing the global financial network. The vast majority of developers of actual cryptographic and open source projects such as bitcoin and Monero have explicitly stated that the utilization of centralized blockchain networks isn’t efficient due to their severe security flaws.

More importantly, blockchain technology isn’t structured to handle millions of data sets and hundreds of millions of data points in real time. In fact, one limitation of bitcoin as a digital currency is its inability to facilitate massive amounts of transactions faster, like a settlement network to be critical. However, bitcoin users, companies and developers aren’t pushing for reckless developments on top of bitcoin to ensure appropriate security measures are maintained.

In a presentation about the R3 Corda, R3CEV engineers, developers and researchers stated “No ‘block chain’ because we don’t need one,” admitting that the utilization and implementation of blockchain doesn’t fit their vision and more importantly, technological compatibility.

The global financial industry, network and ecosystem are in urgent need of an overhaul of infrastructure and architecture. It is very difficult for anyone to facilitate payments efficiently through bank systems and regulated financial networks.

R3CEV still maintains a development team of high technological knowledge, foundation and experience. With its team of talented blockchain and bitcoin developers, the R3 consortium will be able to come up with a piece of software or financial network that could most likely drastically improve the global financial industry. However, blockchain technology isn’t what the consortium needs because it simply can’t be implemented into fully regulated markets without tampering with security measures of blockchain technology.

In the upcoming months, the R3 Corda and the R3 development team will allocate its resources in developing a platform that is compliant and compatible with industry-standard protocols such as AMQP, JDBC and PKIX, while sustaining a close relationship with regulators to avoid any potential regulatory conflicts.

Ever since its launch, the R3 consortium has emphasized the processing of massive volumes of data and maintenance of a transparent and immutable network of financial operations. It is certainly a smart decision to move on from blockchain technology which the consortium has failed to implement and commercialize in a large scale.

Peter Todd, Bitcoin Core developer and well renowned cryptographer, consistently criticized the efficiency of R3 Corda and the R3 Consortium’s other blockchain platforms. He described it as “bitcoin without blockchain.”

Now, the R3 Consortium and its developers can have the freedom to work on whichever software or technology they believe are most relevant in solving the global financial industry’s major problems.

All that time and $$$ wasted when they simply could have looked to NEM or Mijin!  Cheesy

currently, i own half million. I want to own at least 1 million, guess i will be buying a little each week.

Buying at a cheap price.
Later $1 and then $10 XEM.

About 8 months or more ago, when the steamPUMP was at its max, i posted a blog on steemit with some babes sitting on my car's bonnet and another with my tesla coil i built, they earned me over $1500 worth of STEEM.

I dumped it all for XEM! Cheesy

NEM is the only coin in the top 10, and possibly even top 20, that was not mining distribution (which mining kings dominate) or a massive ICO (rich get richer).  NEM is the real underdog project in blockchain land and it is massively undervalued.    NEM is like Amazon / Google during dotcom, Amazon / Google were ignored during all the dotcom hype.   Grin

That's the real reason why NEM always faced resistance in the top 1% of Crypto Land, especially on the Anglophone social media like Bitcointalk but also the biased outlets / fake news like Coindesk (the original creator was a very wealthy man).  If you don't let the mining kings or rich dominate your distribution then they send their shills to discredit your project and black list you on websites like Coindesk.

It's the same reason why U.S. politics is screwed up because the rich can lobby all day and completely mitigate and minimize working and middle class concerns.

NEM thrives in Japan and Asia because the blockchain whales are Anglophones who can't really manipulate things in East Asia due to language barriers.

Surely.
If we search the word "NEM" in Coindesk, amazingly there is no article title including the word "NEM" in spite of Top 10 position.
This gives the impression that they are purposely trying to ignore NEM because they don't welcome NEM's success.

Yes completley agree, its a joke looking at all the crap they promote on that site, totally manipulated...

I'm an initial investor. I haven't redeemed my NEM. Is there any way to redeem it now?

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

We have updated both the detailed instructions on medium and infographic.

Special thanks goes to amytheplanarshift for providing the updated versions for that.

Important announcement

We are very pleased to announce that Phase 1 of the official NEM redemption process starts now. Patmast3r has already begun sending the tokens via PM on bitcointalk.

Please check the following link for detailed overview of the whole redemption process(Phase 1 and Phase 2):

Phase 1 Redemption Guide

Note: A special thanks goes to Patmast3r for preparing things and to amytheplanarshift for the simple and useful infographic.

Im afraid to say its too late, AFAIK anyway.

Physical manipulatives are usually strongly emphasized in childcare and Montesorri programs for young learners because of the power of association.  I think Bitcoin benefited a lot by having physical manipulatives, especially those Cassisus coins, which made Bitcoin look tangible / real to new users and disbelievers.

Problem is NEM isn't quite 2013 in virality.  Even the blockchain scene in Japan, despite high volumes, still feels like 2010-2012 in terms of local awareness and usage.  Rushing out coins for NEM wouldn't be effective timing at the moment.

One difference though is that in 2013 when you mention bitcoin to someone and they say wtf is that. You have a lot of explaining to do.
Today if you mention NEM, you can say like bitcoin but better.

Yes, thats quite true

Toshiba to possibly file bankrupcy.
This is serious to the Japan Economy.
One reason why diversifying into crypto is a good idea.

a question guys/gals

I try to learn more about how programming in NEM works (on management level, i am not a programmer) but i have a few questions about it.

http://wiki.nem.io/index.php/NEM_APIs
is this page still valid ? can currently 'only' java be used for making apps with NEM ?

Suppose I want to make a messaging app, I understand that with sending the private key to another person he can decode a message.  But how/where is the message itself stored ? if this is in the blockchain itself, how is blockchain growth manged?

And would it be possible to store 'classic' database records in it with multiple cells (although of course, not changeable) ? If a change in a 'record' is made, can i store the change in a future block and somehow track the changes ?

Where ( apart form this forum Smiley would be the best place to find programmers who can work with this?

Thanx in advance !

Yes, I believe this is still valid, however as I understand it anyway, there will be some completley new API's written in C++ when catapult is launched.
