401  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is your plan for the next world wide recession. Are you planning on such? on: September 20, 2018, 09:53:40 PM
Though I voted for it would be all peachy but still this thread needs attention and I hope we can have some serious talk about it.
Why not consider moving this thread to Ivory Tower board?

What is the Ivory Tower board? (sorry, clueless..)

brad

You can find it here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=251.0 it's a child board of serious discussion.
It restricts members from posting if they are newbies, jr. members, etc, so spammers won't have a chance to take over the conversation flooding your topic with meaningless shitposts....

To cut the long story short, you can find quality topics and discussions there, go and check it out, you'll be surprised if you used to just read Bitcoin Discussion and other boards with a lot of spam megathreads.

403  Other / Meta / Re: Newbie Patrol on: September 20, 2018, 08:07:26 PM
...
There are no strategies, just open it and report everything that is wrong.
...
If the posts could have a kind of marker that can show that the post was already reported or not (irrespectively of the report if it was good or not), it would speed up this whole process
Also, if you are reading thru a topic and you see something that worth reporting, you could also check if someone has already reported it or not...
This way, the reporters would not work parallel, so reporting could become more effective

EDIT:
Is it possible to just split this patrol page for Bitcoin board and for everything 'Other'?
404  Other / Meta / Re: Let the merit related threads get deleted, strengthening the fight against spam. on: September 20, 2018, 07:17:53 PM
What if we open a sub-thread or whatever in Meta called 'Merit' and we should move all the Merit related topics to there.
That's a lovely idea you got there, this way users can see other important discussion that don't involves merit this merit that. But don't agree with you on this one
It should not be automated,
I think it should be automated, beside manual reporting gives moderators much work and adding merit related topic to the list will only increase their workload.

One more questions, how do we direct out suggestions to the right authorities? How do we get their attention so they can put some thought into our ideas on better forum features?.

Well, it can be automated, no problem with that, just wanted to speed up the process a bit, because if you want to automate something, it needs coding and that needs a lot of time.

To catch the attention of the forum staff, you can do nothing but express your opinion here and there and maybe they'll read it.
405  Other / Meta / Re: I think the meta section is living proof of what the forum could and should be. on: September 19, 2018, 09:37:51 PM
I wish we could move all the Merit related topics into a new sub-thread, sub-section or something similar... Or just to combine all the merit related topics into one 'Merit Megathread' where everyone could tell his/her opinion about the merit system, or to move this whole thing into the Beginners' board... I'm not 100% sure that if someone complains against a working solution (merit system) then it's belongs to Meta, because in my understanding Meta is for something that's unexpected, bug, error, etc...
406  Other / Meta / Re: The case of one account with no posts and 250 merit on: September 19, 2018, 09:20:17 PM
I've seen this before with farmed accounts. By deleting the post history they can sell the account and re-use the previous posts to farm a new account without getting caught for plagiarism.

This is a big weakness that needs to be addressed.

I think noone would care if merits that belongs to deleted posts are just disappeared.

But one thing that came into my mind in connection with this:
If someone has created a proper topic and started a real conversation about a meaningful topic, and have received merit for it, but...
Some shitposters have taken over the topic (because most of the topics are not self-moderated) and it became a spamfest, mods can delete the whole topic and the well deserved merit too...
So it's not a solution, in the end, unfortunately...
407  Other / Meta / Re: Let the merit related threads get deleted, strengthening the fight against spam. on: September 19, 2018, 09:08:49 PM
What if we open a sub-thread or whatever in Meta called 'Merit' and we should move all the Merit related topics to there. It should not be automated, I would be happy to report every single topic if the title contains the word: Merit....
Meta would be much better if this can be realized...
408  Other / Meta / Re: Signature Probation: Newbie-friendly alternative to Jr. Member Merit requirement on: September 19, 2018, 08:58:04 PM
...
You could say now: OK, then newbies should get Merits for every single meaningful question or contribution they post. But I have some reservations against that.
- First, I think we would need much more Merit sources if this should become a new "standard", because it's really easy to post "something meaningful".
- Second, after posting one single meaningful post, you can continue to spam. You can even "out-source" the "meaningful post" to get that single merit (e.g. pay a person which is more familiar with Bitcoin to start a thread for you, that should not cost more than 0.001 BTC or a couple of dollars).
...
There are now more merit sources than before, so it should help newbies.
Also, theymos wrote to the merit sources (you can check it in a topic about it, I can't find it now), that they should not be too strict with newbies, newbies should only post 'good' or 'average' posts to get a merit and there's no need to post 'excellent' or 'meaningful' posts...
So sooner or later (I hope sooner) we'll see some improvement in the forum...
409  Other / Meta / Re: Is the new rule (1 Merit for Jr. Member) already reducing spam? on: September 19, 2018, 08:19:46 PM
....
My script CAN and WILL find all users that:
  • were junior members before theymos's rule change
  • AND were demoted because of theymos's rule change
  • AND received exactly 1 merit AFTER they were demoted in order to be promoted again
...
Maybe it should contain all the users who has received 2 merits or some more, or to do this check after you have finished the 1 merit list...
I think if someone farms a lot of accounts, and wants to distribute merits somehow unnoticed, they won't just pour all the merits from the same account to all of the farmed members but will send 2 merits to an account and that account will have 1 sMerit, so it can send it to another farmed one. It means in the end that the farmer has sent 2 merits and merited 2 accounts with it, so merit has not lost in the transaction...
Just a quick idea...
410  Other / Meta / Re: WHAT TO DO WITH 1 MERIT ? Why we need this update ? on: September 19, 2018, 07:41:21 PM
We are just cheap assholes and don't want to pay 10$ for copper member status  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Just kidding I don't need it but its funny that most of the people who cry because of new rule are really cheap bastards!
Just think about it a bit different:
if someone can solve his/her problem with $10, it's OK, not a big deal
but an account farmer, who farms 100s or even more accounts, it costs 100 times more, at least $1,000 to buy copper membership for the farmed accounts, to be able to continue to spam and earn with that army of spambots... (but I'm sure who has 100 farmed accounts, it's not a big deal for him to pay even a few 1000 dollars for copper membership...)
411  Other / Meta / Re: Demoted newbies, please stop crying. on: September 18, 2018, 10:07:19 PM
This situation will be at least as annoying as the spam that occurred after the introduction of the merit system. The measure was long overdue and many users were asking for it. Kiss

I'm calling it the "pissed off newbie invasion". I expect for a few weeks at least we'll have half a dozen threads opened addressing the new implementation, and everyone rehashing what has already been said in the main thread.
Or we can create a topic in Meta, like: Demoted newbies' topic (for crying)... and lock (or delete) all the other topics about this change...
There are two kind of newbies now:
1. Who want to rage against the new system and this is why he/she opens a new topic in meta
2. Who wants to get merit immediately and starts a topic and writes in a style that will catch the merit sources' eyes, like advicing other newbies to create decent posts in order to get merit and stop crying, etc...
They should all go into one topic, it could grow 20 pages in a day and the merit sources would have an easier task if they really want to search among those users.... (or not...)
And Meta would be much cleaner, like it was 3 days before...
412  Other / Meta / Re: A solution to the Merit and sMerit situation? on: September 18, 2018, 09:19:08 PM
...
There are hundreds of posts and thousands of good comments every day. Do you think 23050 sMerit is enough for everyone every 30 days?
You have 12 merits for yourself. Do you think you will give someone a merit? That's the question I give you. You are striving to become a full member and everyone also wants merit to improve their rankings so it is difficult to get merit for posts.
Maybe it's not enough today, but I doubt it...
But let's see this in a week or two... If we start to report newbies with 1000s and 2000s of shitposts (former Jr. members in bounty campaigns), banning them will mean nuking them, which also means the deletion of their posts... If we nuke a few newbie of this kind the forum will less crowded, and the 'normal' posts will be easier to find to merit them...

hi ADMIN!
I'm a novice i just need 1 metrit to jr, i have a useful comment for other newbie please give me a metrit, thank you so much !!!
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=935898.msg45877592#msg45877592

With all respect i like to ask you why do you spam my thread?
Your comment is not related the thread.
Sorry my friend but i do not undestood your point here.
If your comment is related with my thread then could explain this ?

Thank you!
Don't bother to ask for an explanation, that user is spamming a hell lot of topics with the exact same post... Most likely he/she will never get back to this topic (firstly, it was not his/her intention, and secondly he/she will be banned most probably because of this spam)
414  Other / Meta / Re: Before you give merit to a newly-demoted newbie... on: September 18, 2018, 08:44:49 PM
...
And, afaik, almost 99,99999999% of members that have credits and a higher rank, earned it with the old rules, not with these new rules.
Just don't forget that it doesn't matter how you 'earned' your rank, old rules, new rules, people are reporting spam and shitposts, so higher ranks are also reported if they don't act according to the rules of the forum. If you are a decent poster, and you want to rank up, you still have the chance, but it will be a bit slower compared to the times of the 'old rules'...
415  Other / Meta / Re: We accept this update, this should be done long Ago - Jr Member Requirements on: September 18, 2018, 08:27:03 PM
Yes agreed , This decision is good for us . But i think many sufferers will go against the system. What will happen now ?
Nothing special will happen... There will be a flood in the Meta from newbies, complaining about the change. There will be some DDOS, from the account farmers and from those goups who had 1000s of accounts at hand, in case of need... But now we only need to let the dust settle and let newbies start to work hard to get 1 (one) merit... It won't be as hard as it seems now, but time will tell...
416  Other / Meta / Re: New rules about Merit on: September 18, 2018, 08:12:42 PM
Yesterday the rules about Merit changed. Now, If you want to participate in Signature Bounty at least, how a Junior Member you would have to have 1 Merit. Many people, who was selling Bitcointalk's accounts lost their subject of earnings. The team of Bitcointalk lost 2-3 BTC per day, for accounts from IP with proxybans. It's very sad. I have 90 posts and Newbie... I lost my Signature. A lot of people lost their Signatures. In many Youtube bounties, i have participated in, I lost my tokens, because they need rank on the forum from Junior Member. Thank you..
Well, this was the main idea behind the change... It's not really hard to get 1 merit, newbies are just frightened now, but after a few days this hype will just stop and people will start to adapt to the new situation...
417  Other / Meta / Re: Jr. member to newbie what happened in ranking? on: September 18, 2018, 08:03:56 PM
hi ADMIN!
I'm a novice i just need 1 metrit to jr, i have a useful comment for other newbie please give me a metrit, thank you so much !!!

That's a garbage post, and you're going on ignore.
Just after that the post has been reported... Now it's the time to start to report "newbies" who were juniors before, because now we can get rid of a hell lot of spam with nuke... The problem was with the banning that the shitposts remained...
418  Other / Meta / Re: How to make quality post in forum on: September 18, 2018, 08:00:12 PM
I would like to propose to slowly start to lock these kind of threads... These are just for gathering a few merits for the OP, nothing special extra information or value has been added... all those advices are available in earlier posts in connection with the merit system. We should start cleaning Meta now, it's just exploded in the last days... (understandable Smiley )
419  Other / Meta / Re: Let the "Merit broke my life" thread flood begin on: September 18, 2018, 07:54:07 PM
...
The thing is, I wonder why they're not focusing on making a good/contributive post, but choose to complaints and accuse theymos to be unfair, and etc. Even on my local board, there are a lot of accusations and complaints here and there. Meta? Nah, I will stop visiting meta for the next weeks because of this.

1 merit is not that hard, even I can get 1 merit by posting funny pic :/
It's not that hard, if you have only 1 account, and you really try it... But if you are an account farmer with 100s or 1000s of account, just imagine, they have to write 100s and 1000s of decent posts, if every post gets it's merit... if only every 3rd... that's 3000 posts to write in a few days, because they will be kicked from their campaign... So for the good newbies, it should not be a real barrier but for cheaters... I like this idea
420  Other / Meta / Re: To all higher ranked members here on: September 18, 2018, 06:32:32 PM
—So before merit system people who are legendary right now, got into that position by their quality of post ? No right? They might have spammed too to get into member,Hero member and legendary. So why no action on them —

WRONG!
If somebody who is a Legendary Member was a regular shitposter & or spammer it’s likely that somebody would have reported their posts & they’d have been banned before reaching Full Member status.

Most Legendary Members post at least mediocre quality posts.

Or, if they have managed to reach the Legendary rank, but they are still posting shit, it's also possible that someone will report them. There's no rule like Legendary rank makes someone safe from the reports... So it's not a kind of insurance if someone have higher rank, spammers will be reported, sooner or later...
