Breaking news!
https://www.foxsports.com.au/tennis/ash-barty-retires-from-tennis-tennis-news-2022-latest-update-french-open-wimbledon-ashleigh-barty/news-story/0bc29eb5bc08cb48406efa51b19f1953
Tennis player Ashleigh Barty, despite her very young age (25 years), has announced her retirement from competitions.
she is the current number one in the WTA rankings!
Really did not see this coming. She is young, on top of her game and always looks so positive. Big surprise for me.

It sounds like it's mostly a lack of motivation. She always said Wimbledon was her main target, and she's won that. She's an Aussie, so the AO also has importance for her, she's won that now too. Of course I'm surprised and she could have gone on longer at the very top... but then at the other end of the scale you can look at someone like Andy Murray, who used to be at or near the peak of the game, but now is not and will never regain those previous heights, and you wonder why he keeps playing... he just wants to, motivation. Barty doesn't want to. Maybe she'll regret it later, maybe not, but it's understandable I suppose. I can well imagine that sustaining an elite tennis career requires huge motivation, and if you feel that slipping, it's time to call it quits.

I think everyone has their own life to live, it's he's or her own choice [...] But it's morally wrong to be Gay n lesbian, that shits awful and irksome.

I think it's all fine, and there's no need for an "us and them" mentality. Also it's not necessarily a "choice" - I didn't consciously choose my sexual orientation, it's just how I am. Same for others. People are just people.

I'm interested that you personally are fine with individual preferences, and yet also believe them to be wrong. Presumably the "morally right and wrong" part is what you've been taught by others, in which case it sounds like you're challenging what you've been taught, which is always a good thing.
483  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Motosport General discussion tread --- Formula1, MotoGP, WTCC, ETCC, DTM..... on: March 23, 2022, 03:50:11 PM
the argument for "who is the best driver" always falls short. Because in F1 there is a part of luck involved, but even if luck wasn't involved, then we are talking about car difference between teams as well.

It's true that the car plays a part, but it's also true that the best drivers tend to end up at the best teams. This is how Max got a Red Bull drive, for example, and it's why Mercedes ditched Bottas but kept Hamilton. A good driver will usually end up at a good team. A bad driver in a good team will get replaced.

He renewed his contract until 2026 I think for 50m/year to prevent the cut for a possible salary cap.

So I can tell you at least 200 million reasons for what he will be not unhappy at all.

That's a good point, but it's also true that many drivers out there - Max surely amongst them - would prefer to drive for the winning team rather than the highest paying team. If Red Bull are paying $50m a year and Ferrari are paying say $20m, but the Ferrari is capable of winning titles and the RB is not, then I'm confident that Max would prefer to take the pay cut in order to fight for titles. Same for Hamilton if a faster car paid less than Merc. Same for quite a few drivers I'd imagine.

So a multi-year contract can net you $$$ but lumber you with a slow car. That being said, it looks like a hypothetical scenario at the moment as the RB is clearly up there with Ferrari as the fastest car at the start of 2022.

I like the fact that this year 3 teams are pretty much on the same level, I think Mercedes can still get something out of their car.

Ferrari and Red Bull are a long long way ahead of Mercedes at the moment. It's 2 teams together who can fight for race wins. Mercedes would have been 1 minute+ back down the road if it hadn't been for the safety car.
Maybe Mercedes can turn it round during the season, but that's a hell of a deficit to try to claw back.

what if [...] Verstappen starts getting frustrated and becomes unhappy

I don't think that's ever going to happen!  Grin
... But seriously, yeah, it's a gamble signing such a long contract, we all know how quickly fortunes can change in F1.
486  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Motosport General discussion tread --- Formula1, MotoGP, WTCC, ETCC, DTM..... on: March 20, 2022, 07:19:06 PM
There is concerning things for Red Bull - it's not about the pace, but 3 of 4 their cars haven't reached finish after engine related issues.

I've just heard that the FIA have changed the rules, so whoever retires from second place a couple of laps from the end is declared the winner. Cheesy

It's only sad to see Mclaren, who aren't competetive at all yet.

Yeah. I really wanted them to do well. It's not looking great for them at the moment. But anyway, nice to see Ferrari back where they belong.

What a return for Magnussen - P5.

My favourite thing from the race, I think. He deserves a drive and this was brilliant.
487  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Motosport General discussion tread --- Formula1, MotoGP, WTCC, ETCC, DTM..... on: March 20, 2022, 04:57:54 PM
^  This could be bad omen for Verstappen...  And he just signed a new contract tying him with with the team until 2028 too.  He should've kept his option open by after the third year as we really don't know what's going to happen.

I don't think it's going to be a major issue, I mean the two Red Bulls almost made it to the end. It's a concern, yes, but I think they'll fix it. They have a great car.

I don't know why but i still consider Mercedes as the big favorite of Red Bull in this season overall

I can't see that at the moment. Red Bull have the far superior package, Mercedes are struggling. Their 3rd and 4th flattered them today, they are nowhere near as quick as Ferrari or Red Bull.
But over the course of the season (where development is permitted), yes, I would not be surprised to see them improve their car significantly. Their main issue seems to come from trying to compensate for the porpoising, for which they've lifted the car and so lost some downforce. If they can resolve this, I'm sure they'll be fighting for wins again. But as it stands right now, the Red Bull is way better (if it can just finish a race).
488  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Motosport General discussion tread --- Formula1, MotoGP, WTCC, ETCC, DTM..... on: March 20, 2022, 04:53:14 PM
HONDA DISASTER 3 of the 6 cars out for engine problems.

Yep. It's always the big question at the start of the season...

will there be any reliability issues?

TBH though, I was certainly not expecting it to be Red Bull with the problems. Absolute disaster for them, and weird how both cars got hit at almost the exact same time.
I'm quite happy with this race, it's great to see Ferraris back where they belong, brilliant for Magnussen which I'm really happy about, I'm happy for Bottas to score some decent points too, and I have to admit a bit of schadenfreude at the misfortunes of the arrogant Verstappen.

But I do want Red Bull to fix their issue and have Max back at the front for the next race. What we don't want is a single team sailing away with it again, even if it is Ferrari.

489  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Motosport General discussion tread --- Formula1, MotoGP, WTCC, ETCC, DTM..... on: March 19, 2022, 05:47:04 PM
I got the prediction correctly  Grin

I wasn't a long way off, either. Cheesy

I'd have Max to win, with Ferraris 2 and 3... and the same for qualifying, unless Perez can somehow split the red cars.

I don't think qualifying revealed any surprises, everyone is about where we thought they would be. Maybe I'm a bit surprised at Bottas being so high, but nothing really other than that.
So we've seen the raw pace that the cars have, the questions for tomorrow are what's overtaking and close following like, is it easier as intended? Will tyre deg be improved - I think early indications from the drivers are it's not as good as hoped. And then finally, will there be any reliability issues?

490  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ⚽UEFA Champions League Discussion Thread -- 2021/22 Round of 16! on: March 18, 2022, 03:48:00 PM
Three clubs from Premier League won't play against each other in quarter final so will they be able to win all and make another domination in semi-final? It looks like Liverpool will have easiest quarter final among three Premier League clubs. Let's see how those clubs will perform in this round.

I'd say the most likely winners of the quarter finals are Liverpool, Man C, Chelsea and Bayern.
Chelsea/Real probably looks the tightest.

I hope it's not all English teams, anyway. The competition is better when teams from different nations play each other. And a final with two teams from the same country just isn't as interesting.

TBH the most (only?) interesting thing about this thread is that there appears to be a huge gap from September to the end of February where no crimes at all were committed by black people.
Or is it simply that you're only reporting a few individual instances here and there, and so not really saying anything at all about overall trends? Maybe you should just give up.

A perfectly race free world can only exist if breeding is controlled by the state.

492  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why usa dont invade kuwait ? on: March 18, 2022, 03:31:56 PM
There is a lot oil usa should invade

I think there might be a bit of history there.
I can't really envisage any realistic scenario where the US will say "Hey, let's send our troops to the Middle-East and get some oil!"
493  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread 2021/2022 on: March 18, 2022, 03:29:41 PM

The odds have changed and now they are:

Manchester City FC 1.45

Liverpool 2.70

There are 9 more rounds ahead, 27 points will be played. Is a one-point advantage really that critical? After all, even one draw for Manchester City means the loss of first place. A tough choice, but betting on Liverpool looks like the more logical in terms risk/reward.
Both teams now look about the same to me, but Liverpool look stronger towards the end of the championship.

The odds will change the more and the odd makers will keep reducing the odds because it is now becoming obvious to them that Liverpool can conquer. I have seen that Liverpool can win the title months ago. When you look at the table you will know the Liverpool has scored more goals and Liverpool has loss less match. Why Manchester City is ahead of them is because they drew more than Manchester City.

Between Manchester City and Liverpool till the end of the season, Manchester City is the one that will likely loss because Liverpool has a better attack and they score alot of goals on a normal day. Apart from that, every other clubs in England are against Manchester City to win the title. This means that when they have match with them, they will put in their best effort to atleast have a draw. Manchester City has dominated England very well, they shouldn't be allowed to win this year again so that epl will not look like ligue 1.

I think Liverpool might win it, just because they aren't dropping any points at all, but Man City are definitely stumbling a bit.
Having said that, Man City's remaining games all look fairly easy, whereas Liverpool have some tougher matches (Spurs, Man U and the derby vs Everton).

It could all come down to the Man City vs Liverpool game on 10th April. If someone wins that, they have to be title favourites.
494  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ⚽ English Premier League Season: 2021/2022 on: March 18, 2022, 03:25:36 PM
I didn't watch the match but read the news that something weird went on at Goodison Park and the refs gave the match a stoppage time of around 17 minutes which gave Lampard's boys to win the match.  LOL.  And I really thought that bet was in the bag.  No I remember why I was quitting betting in football.  Cheesy  I think the football betting gods are having a riot laughing at me.

I was going to bet on Newcastle winning that match, but I didn't get around to making the bet in time.
TBH a Newcastle win looked like a rock-solid certainty, they've been winning all their games and Everton have been losing everything and dropping towards the relegation places. This result is a bit of a surprise.

Watford still have to play both Everton and Leeds, so those games could go a long way to deciding who goes down.
495  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Motosport General discussion tread --- Formula1, MotoGP, WTCC, ETCC, DTM..... on: March 18, 2022, 03:17:26 PM
a few car parts flying all over the place.  Lol.  So maaaybe we'll see a safety car during the race?  Wink  I'm learning Cnut.  Grin

I'd also suspect (but I haven't looked at any data on this) that we might get more safety cars than normal just because these are totally new cars that haven't been fully battle-tested yet. I'm expecting some reliability issues, and maybe cars stopping on track or in awkward places.

And be aware that everybody was using the softs except for Ferrari and RBR who were using the mediums.

Yep. This is important. Ferrari and Red Bull still look strongest. Hamilton is way down the order, but may not be representative of the Merc, as Russell was a bit quicker.
496  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Motosport General discussion tread --- Formula1, MotoGP, WTCC, ETCC, DTM..... on: March 17, 2022, 07:01:23 PM

To me that looks like they think maybe Ferrari have the best car, but Max and Lewis can compensate for that because they are better drivers in slightly worse cars.

My feeling is that Red Bull have the best car, with Ferrari second, and Mercedes some way behind. I fully expect Mercedes to catch up and maybe even become the top car at some point, but I'm not convinced it will happen in the first race. I'd have Max to win, with Ferraris 2 and 3... and the same for qualifying, unless Perez can somehow split the red cars.
497  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ⚽ English Premier League Season: 2021/2022 on: March 17, 2022, 04:05:47 PM
Liverpool is obviously better than Arsenal, and Arsenal has to do better if they want to compete at the top level, by the top-level I obviously mean competing with Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, and top teams like these. They also need to make some changes in the squad otherwise they will not be able to compete at that level.

Liverpool, Man C, Chelsea, yes. Although I suppose it remains to be seen whether Chelsea will start to drop away due to the Abramovich sanctions and the uncertainty at the club.

I'd disagree though that Arsenal need to do better to compete with Man U. I think Arsenal are better than Man U right now. They will qualify for the Champions League next season, and Man U won't.
498  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread 2021/2022 on: March 17, 2022, 04:02:51 PM
for the current championship title, it will still be very difficult to predict because it really depends on the performance of the two teams when one slips and falls, the other will win.
City have felt a fall during last week's draw and they cannot experience this again if they don't want Liverpool to take their place

The match on April 10 when Man City play Liverpool is obviously key, you'd imagine whoever wins that will take the title - not least because of the psychological effects it will have on the winners and losers.
If it's a draw though, I'd fancy Liverpool as they just aren't dropping any points at the moment, and momentum is key.

Neither Man C nor Liverpool has to play Chelsea again, which would be the other potential difficulty.
499  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Who will lose in Ukraine? on: March 17, 2022, 03:57:54 PM
Russian will defeat Ukraine like twenty times because of the level of war equipment there, so from the way I'm seeing it, Russian will man over Ukraine very well

There's a distinction between taking control of strategic targets, and "winning". It does seem likely that Russia will take control of its key targets at some point... but every act of aggression, every new civilian killed, creates more anti-Russian sentiment amongst the population. The only way that Russia can realistically end the war is by removing/forcibly relocating all Ukranians. Otherwise, resistance will continue indefinitely.

So who will lose in Ukraine? Arguably, everyone.
500  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Motosport General discussion tread --- Formula1, MotoGP, WTCC, ETCC, DTM..... on: March 16, 2022, 01:25:41 PM
Decent odds for Max Verstappen actually.  He's is at 3.00 the last time I looked with Hamilton around 3.45.  And yeah that's the thing, we're all guessing here...  Even the sports betting sites are guessing here.  Cheesy  It's why I think some value could be had before qualifying.  And the sportsbetting sites could also be slow in adjusting the lines for the next couple of races if either of the Ferraris win at Bahrain.

Yeah, you might be right. 3.00 is decent for Verstappen. I wouldn't put any money on Hamilton though, I do think some of the Merc problems are genuine and they will be behind Ferrari and Red Bull at least in the first race. And yes, if Max storms through qualifying and takes a dominant pole, those odds would deteriorate significantly. But I'm still not willing to bet yet... a Max win certainly seems possible, but so many other things seem just as possible, too.
