Most chances Kane is going to stay here in Tottenham for one more season as Chairman already announces he is not going to drop his valuation which is £150m and Manchester City is not going to pay this right now, so we will have this for Winter or next season.

It is starting to look like he'll stay. Look at the Villa situation with Grealish, they knew he was going and started buying up replacement players even before he left. You look at Spurs, and they're not doing that... which does maybe suggest that they think they'll manage to keep hold of him. If you are going to spend money on a replacement striker, you want to do it before the selling team know that you have £150m in your pocket.

There is a need for greater appreciation and recognition of Paralympics.

Definitely. It is quite a big thing in my country (UK), but I understand that in certain other countries it is not yet a real mainstream event. The USA probably needs to step up a bit from last time, as you'd expect them to be vying with China for top spot.

Can politics be beyond dirty  game? Can their be politics with no hate or envy of opposition

I think it's extremely rare. To be a successful politician you need to get your hands dirty and make deals with people you don't like or trust. Politics is all about compromise, and being willing to negotiate to achieve not your ideal result, but one that is just good enough.

There are certainly politicians who are idealistic and seem pure-hearted, people like Jeremy Corbyn or Bernie Sanders... but often these people are the opposition to those in power. In opposition, there isn't really the need to make unpalatable decisions. And the ones that win elections tend to be those who are comfortable playing the game of politics, and who have one eye always on self-advantage.

Poor Leicester got a huge defeat against West Ham last night. Until the red card, I think that things weren't going so bad for them.

It's quite a shock. Yes they were playing with ten men, but still often teams are fine with ten men and can hold out and not concede again. Leicester are a good team, and this result is a real surprise. West Ham looked quite good last season. If they continue to improve then they should be one of the favourites for a European spot, although they still are a long way short of Champions League quality.
1365  Other / Politics & Society / Re: If the Taliban enforces Sharia law in Afghanistan, what will the West do? on: August 23, 2021, 11:51:37 AM
But Iran is a good country for living

I think everyone would agree that life in Iran is different to life in Afghanistan. The issue in Afghanistan is not so much the enforcing of Sharia law, as the fact that it is the Taliban doing so. Sharia law may look barbaric and antiquated, but interpretation is flexible; the effects of its implementation depends largely on who it is doing the implementing.

Most nations are interested only in threats to themselves. I don't think the West will do much — if anything — when the Taliban starts oppressing the population of Afghanistan. The West will only be interested if the country starts to become a breeding ground for terrorism that is then exported.
1366  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Taliban are highly unlikely to change on: August 23, 2021, 06:10:46 AM
Everybody knows the Taliban wants more weapons, etc. They'll change as soon as they are offered more money for better quality poppies.

Cool

I don't think their aim is to acquire more money. If that was their main purpose for wanting power, they'd just set up a tin-pot dictator and suck up all of the nation's wealth and resources, like we see in so many struggling places around the world. The US alone spent around $2 trillion on the war, or to put it another way about $275 million per day for 20 years. If the Taliban could be bought off, it would have been done long before now, and at much lower financial cost, let alone human cost.
1367  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread 2021/2022 on: August 22, 2021, 06:50:34 PM
Lukaku is quicker than I remember him being when he played for Manchester United.

He's a different player now, one of the best in the world. We probably all think "oh, Lukaku has come back", and then, despite the intervening years, despite the nearly £100m fee, we still intuitively expect him to be the same player he was, and are surprised when we see that he's better. We know he's different, but we can't get rid of the intuitive expectation of him being the same. But he is definitely not the same player now. Chelsea last season were a good team, but not quite good enough to challenge for the title. Chelsea plus Lukaku this season could be a different proposition.
1368  Other / Politics & Society / Re: If the Taliban enforces Sharia law in Afghanistan, what will the West do? on: August 22, 2021, 06:35:32 PM
If sharia law is the religious law of Islam then why there is no such law exists in other muslim countries, Even Iran has no such kind of law. They have law but it is made by them. There is only restriction that people who are not couples cannot touch each other as it might be a type of harresment. I don't know how but there is their own ideology. Even that kind of law does not exist in Pakistan which is producing the Talibans.

Sharia law is used in other countries, yes. Including Iran, yes. As I say though, it can be intrepreted and applied in different ways.

Here's an example crime and punishment in Iran:
Quote
Theft (sirqhat-e-haddi): 1st offense, amputation of the 4 right fingers; 2nd offense, amputation of the 5 left toes; 3rd offense, life imprisonment; 4th offense, death penalty.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judicial_system_of_the_Islamic_Republic_of_Iran#Hadd_crimes

As for which countries use Sharia law, this is as good a link as any: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_of_Sharia_by_country

Quote
Iran
Article 167 of the constitution states that all judicial rulings must be based upon "authoritative Islamic sources and authentic fatwa". Book 2 of the Islamic Penal Code of Iran is entirely devoted to hudud punishments. Iranian application of sharia has been seen by scholars as highly flexible and directly contradicting traditional interpretations of the sharia.

Pakistan
The Constitution of Pakistan acknowledges God as the sole sovereign of the universe and the Parliament as a delegate. The Constitution of Pakistan requires that all laws conform with Islam and not conflict with the Quran or Sunnah. The Council of Islamic Ideology reviewed the British era legislation and found most of it did not conflict with Sharia. Sharia was declared the Supreme Law of Pakistan in the 1991 Enforcement of Shariat Act. Section 4 stipulates that courts select an interpretation of law consistent with Islamic jurisprudence and principles.

Saudi Arabia
Saudi law is based entirely on sharia. No codified personal status law exists, which means that judges in courts rule based on their own interpretations of sharia. See Legal system of Saudi Arabia. However as of 2021, Saudi Arabia has new laws of codified which include The Personal Status Law, the Civil Transactions Law, the Penal Code for Discretionary Sanctions, and the Law of Evidence implemented by reformist crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman.

1369  Other / Politics & Society / Re: If the Taliban enforces Sharia law in Afghanistan, what will the West do? on: August 22, 2021, 07:37:18 AM
The Taliban's mindset is that Sharia law makes a person prosperous. In case if the Taliban enforces Sharia law in Afghanistan, what will the West do? In that case, the West and all the nations of the world must make their nations prosperous, Poverty must be eradicated, Crime must be eradicated، This is why the Taliban will think that enforcing Sharia law is not necessary, Prosperity of society and freedom of human beings are essential.

I think it's more of an ideology. Sharia law is the religious law of Islam. It can be intrepreted and applied in different ways, but the Taliban's interpretation is extremely strict... presumably to imply religious purity. I don't think prosperity comes into it, really.

As for what the West will do, likely nothing at the moment, concentrate on the withdrawal and trying to reduce casualties. After which the US and allies will no doubt keep a close eye on Afghanistan in order to monitor what happens with terrorist groups. If something emerges that is deemed a credible threat, then I suppose that could be a time for intervention.

Someone has to understand this decision, the Olympic Games didn't matter but now to cancel the Grand Prix?

Yes, it does seem strange. It probably comes down to the importance of the event. The Olympics was planned for years, and is the biggest sporting event in the world, with vast amounts of money already spent on it, and they felt they couldn't cancel it, even with the risk of increased Covid cases. The grand prix on the other hand is much smaller, and although there is some expense involved it is much less than the Olympics. And also Olympic host nations are scheduled a long time in advance. If Japan cancelled, they might not get another chance for decades. Basically I think the grand prix is more easy to cancel because it is seen as less important.
1371  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread 2021/2022 on: August 22, 2021, 06:43:12 AM
Norwich didn’t come back prepared or is something really wrong? How they lost 3-0 against Liverpool and now lost 5-0 against Man City just 2 games into the premier league and Norwich can’t catch a break.

They were great last season in the Championship, and Buendia was their star player. Unfortunately he was so good that Aston Villa bought him. So now Norwich go into the new season against much tougher teams, but without their best player. I'm sure this is a huge factor in their struggles at the moment.

We already know that as many as 500,000 Americans have already been killed by the “clot shot,”
How do we know this, though? It is through looking at the data, or is it through deciding vaccine=bad and then inventing some unfounded nonsense in a half-hearted attempt to prop up this belief?

the long-term, slow-acting neurological damage that appears to resemble the human form of Mad Cow Disease
A common anti-vaxxer argument is that the vaccines are new, and we don't know the long-term effects. So which is it? We don't know, or we do know and they're bad? I assume this covers all possible eventualities that you're willing to consider. Roll Eyes

This is actually happening.
It's actually not.

impairing cognition in the process.
Something seems to be impairing cognition. But I'm not sure there's a positive correlation with vaccine recipients.
1373  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Taliban are highly unlikely to change on: August 21, 2021, 05:51:16 PM
UN reports can be wrong because they are saying so they will fulfill their promises they should see if Taliban break any promise than the UN should make a report against them.
If they promise they will do that and stand with the other countries so all should give them a chance to grow.

Consider this hypothetical sequence of events:

1. A man who went on a killing spree with an assault rifle is released from jail.
2. He says 'Please can I have an assault rifle. I promise I won't kill anyone this time'.

Which of the below would you choose as point 3?
3. Refuse to give him the gun, or...
3. Give him the gun, and if he breaks his word and kills people, we'll complain about it afterwards.

This is the problem with taking the Taliban at their word. You can't just make everything right again afterwards.
1374  Other / Off-topic / Re: Have you decided what you want to be? on: August 21, 2021, 05:37:39 PM
I suppose it depends on why you want to study. If you want to learn more about a field you're interested in, then it's fairly straightforward and you just pick what you like. On the other hand, if you are picking a subject in order to secure a good job after graduating, there are other factors to consider. One of which is, with ever increasing automation, which fields will have jobs in the future? Simply looking at jobs that are available right now may not help you, when things are moving so quickly. Smart contract platforms like Ethereum may end up automating whole industries. AI and ML, similarly. Which jobs are least likely to disappear in the coming decades? And often as some jobs get automated away, new jobs arise in new sectors. Will that happen this time? What might be a growth sector? What sort of effect will changes such as the current WFH revolution have?
1375  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread 2021/2022 on: August 21, 2021, 05:31:27 PM
Great reaction came from Manchester City after losing the early game against Tottenham. Today City really vent their emotions against Norwich with 5 goals without reply. They really did and didn't let Norwich shoot more balls into the net. In 90 minutes of regular time, there was only 1 attempt the Norwich players could make, that explains how well City dominated the match. Now Liverpool lead the standings with 6 points from 2 wins.

A great performance, yes. Their team is ridiculously good. There is such a gulf developing between teams like Man City and the rest of the league, we could well reach a point where the top teams only ever drop points when they play each other, and then every game against 'normal' teams in the division they just win easily. If Man City do end up getting Harry Kane, we may as well just give them the league trophy now!
1376  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Football Transfers Speculation, Odds and Predictions on: August 20, 2021, 03:06:41 PM

I think that table might be a little misleading... Villa for example have indeed spent £93m... but they've also received £100m for selling Grealish, so actually have a net income rather than a net spend this close season. Mind you, I suppose these charts will always be a bit misleading even if they include sales, as they won't include the often huge outlay on wages for incoming mega-stars, which even for a player on a paltry £100kpw would be £5m over one season, or a £25m commitment over a 5 year contract.

Still, if Man City do eventually get Kane, they'd be right where you'd expect them - top of the spending chart!
1377  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Society with no law on: August 20, 2021, 02:58:33 PM
What is life without law, how would the society be like without  law.

Well, we don't know for certain how the modern world would change if suddenly all laws were suspended everywhere... but I would imagine that the end result would be a ruling class who establish and maintain their position through violence (or the threat of violence), who then keep everyone else more or less subjugated, not as far as them being slaves, but a careful balance so that people have at least a basic standard of living, so that they would have something to lose if they rose up in rebellion. It is if someone has nothing to lose that they become a threat. Give them some minor token, something small to lose, and they can be managed quite easily.
1378  Economy / Economics / Re: Can the world be without poverty on: August 19, 2021, 06:42:13 AM
One of the best ways to reduce poverty is to reduce inequality. A lot of ultra rich people do give money away voluntarily, and try to solve some of the world's problems, the Gates Foundation being an example. But it shouldn't really be voluntary, if taxation worked properly. Jeff Bezos for example has around £200 billion. It's very difficult for us to visualise what that means, as the number is so far beyond what our human brains deal with in everyday life.
1379  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread 2021/2022 on: August 19, 2021, 05:55:16 AM
Of course this will be a dilemma for Kane, can't achieve his desire to move to Manchester city on the other hand Spurs want to keep him even though later he becomes a free transfer as long as Kane can still survive and a duet with Son.

I don't even have any news about this, is it still in negotiations or is it just like that? still Kane doesn't seem to be playing soon after the problem hasn't been resolved, while on the front lines only Son is still aggressive with his agility.

What is clear for now Harry Kane must be feeling frustrated. When he wanted to move (because his team didn't get the title) but Tottenham seemed to complicate the process. Although Man City has not withdrawn their offer, I think Man City will give up and will definitely withdraw their offer if the bidding process still does not run smoothly.

The Tottenham chairman is a famously tough negotiator, and as he wants to keep Kane that makes it a very difficult proposition for City to get hold of him, even when he wants to leave. I would imagine that Tottenham, having seen Grealish go for £100m have put a huge price tag on Kane... £160m has been reported. They will want to gauge it carefully so that to Kane it seems like a high but fair price, whilst to Man City it seems like too much... so he ends up staying at Spurs not because they refused to let him go, but because Man City failed to meet a reasonable asking price. I'm sure that's what they're doing, but it's a very difficult game to play.
1380  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: French Soccer League Predictions and Discussion Thread (Ligue 1) on: August 19, 2021, 05:44:25 AM
And PSG will prolly be the favorite to win the CL at around 1.90 - 2.05 in the outright.

They will certainly be one of the favourites, but some of the other contenders have also improved... notably Chelsea, who won it last year, and now have Lukaku. Man City may also have improved with the addition of Grealish. And the other big teams will be a threat.

Once we get past the groups it is obviously a knockout competition, and so it is always risky to bet on a winner as it only takes one poor performance against a top team to end your chances.
