Hurkacz vs Murray

It's a shame that Murray lost, I want him to do well after such an immensely long injury lay off... but he is still struggling to find any real form. Time is against him a bit now, and I'm not convinced he'll ever get back to the standards he was previously capable of, and challenge for Slam titles. But regardless of whether he achieves anything else in tennis, he has had a magnificent career, and would have won more slams had he not been competing in the same era as Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. Men's tennis won't be the same when these four are all retired.

Afghanistan has WON the war against the Super Power USA
The Taliban is not Afghanistan. It's a terrorist movement that enforce brutal Sharia law. Here's a bit of background:
https://news.sky.com/story/afghanistan-what-is-sharia-law-and-how-has-the-taliban-interpreted-it-12383974

and is now under freedom.
Try telling that to the 50% of the population that are female. Or indeed to anyone who has to live there and is not a rabid fundamentalist zealot. Quote from the link above.

Quote
Taliban interpretation of Sharia law

The Taliban was condemned internationally for enforcing a strict and extreme version of Sharia law during its rule from 1996 to 2001, which included administering punishments such as public stonings, whippings and hangings.

The militant group also banned music and musical instruments, with the exception of the daf - a type of frame drum - and cut off the hands of thieves and stoned adulterers.

Along with their allies, they committed massacres against Afghan civilians, denied UN food supplies to 160,000 starving people, and conducted a policy of scorched earth - burning vast areas of fertile land and destroying tens of thousands of homes.

Under the Taliban's ruling, activities and media including paintings, photography and movies that depicted people or other living things were banned.

Many Afghans fear the Taliban will reimpose this harsh interpretation of Islamic law - leading to thousands of people trying to flee the country.

Impact on Afghan women

Under the Taliban's rule, women were effectively put under house arrest as they were not allowed to work or have an education.

Women and girls from the age of eight had to wear a burka and had to be chaperoned by a male relative if they wanted to leave their home.

High-heeled shoes were also banned in case they excited men, homes with windows on the ground and first floor had to be painted over and women were forbidden to go on their balconies.

Photographing, filming or displaying pictures of females in newspapers, books, shops or the home was not allowed, place names that had "women" in were changed and women were banned from appearing on radio, TV or at public gatherings.

Women who disobeyed the rules, even if they had no male relatives to go outside with, were flogged in the street or in stadiums and town halls.

Women had their thumb tips cut off for wearing nail varnish and were stoned to death if they refused to declare loyalty to the Taliban. Anyone who broke the rules could be subject to humiliation, public beatings by the Taliban's religious police or execution.

this is not the result that can determine whether City are champions or not.

It's certain that it won't determine the championship... because City still have to play everyone twice, and so can take six points off each team. They can even take three off Spurs in the return fixture.
But it could still be quite costly. Last season was a bit of an anomaly, where the title winning team lost six games. Normally in recent seasons the league winners have only lost around three games all season. A lot will come down to when the top teams play each other, City/United/Chelsea/Liverpool. Any points lost to other teams could be damaging.

I don't understand why there are still rumours about Ronaldo to leave the team for joining Manchester United or PSG. It seems really clear that he won't be leaving this summer. The new season in the Serie A is starting this week. Juventus have Allegri from now on. The conditions seem quite good for Ronaldo. If Juventus still continued with Pirlo, then he would most probably leave.

Ronaldo is one of those players, like Messi, where only a couple of clubs can afford him. Even without a transfer fee, the signing on fee and wages would be absurdly high. Probably only PSG or Man City could get him... but PSG have already bought Messi, and Man City have spent £100m on Grealish, and want to spend even more on Harry Kane. I'm not sure anyone would be willing to spend the sort of money it would need to get Ronaldo... especially as he's coming towards the end of his career now.

It is a secret why Barcelona left Suarez going to Atletico Madrid and signed with Braithwaite.

It was certainly a terrible decision to get rid of Suarez. It was part of the panic after that debacle against Bayern in the Chmpions League. They made a lot of quick, silly decisions and selling Suarez was perhaps the biggest error. It probably cost them the league title last year. Selling a top player to a major rival is rarely a good choice, and Barca paid the price. Now they have lost Messi as well, and will not be anywhere near as good as they used to be. Their financial situation is terrible, and it really constrains them now.

No country so far had offered to the refugees too.

Biden has today apparently authorised an emergency $500m to help the refugees, which is a good move.
As you might expect, the far-right has been vociferous in concocted outrage at this decision. But weirdly, Trump has come out on Biden's side... just probably not on Twitter  Roll Eyes

As for leaving painlessly... we should have offered asylum to everyone who wants it. But that would never fly (no pun intended) in any Western country, or any country really. No one wants millions of Afghanis. We want to be outraged about our foreign fuckups from a safe distance.

Yes, this is sadly the case. Some countries are better than others, though. Sweden I think are pretty good, and Germany have taken over 1 million refugees in recent years.
My own country is probably one of the worst. We had a referendum on xenophobia a few years back, and the bad guys won.

It's a sad fact that migrants (including refugees fleeing persecution) are demonised almost everywhere. Particularly in Western nations with aging populations that would benefit hugely from an influx of largely working age people.

I keep asking myself: What is the purpose of PSG? Collect the best players?

Although lawful, it's absurd to see them "stealing" players from other teams just because they have money.

I think so, yes. Same with Man City. Cheesy

There are very few clubs that can afford the top players. Even when there is no transfer fee involved, there will be an astronomical signing-on fee, plus huge wages. Although it's getting a bit ridiculous, and the PSG or Man City reserve teams would probably mount a decent challenge for a Champions League spot in their respective countries, I'm still definitely looking forward to seeing PSG's crazy new forward line. Mbappe/Messi/Neymar might be the greatest combination ever.

Roma have Jose Mourinho as their new manager now. And this is going to be his first official game with Roma. I really wonder what Roma will do with him. I can't say that they were good in the last season. I'm hoping to see them having a better season with Mourinho.

Well, they've officially signed Tammy Abraham now, for £34m. Apparently there is a buy-back clause where Chelsea can have him back for £68m, which they can activate from June 2023.
I am a bit surprised by all the fuss around Abraham. He seems a fairly good striker, but I think it's unlikely he'll ever be worth £68m. Having said that, the rumour is that Barca were interested in him this week, before he chose Roma... so maybe I am missing something.

Tottenham have registered Harry Kane for the Europa Conference League this means Kane will stay at Tottenham this season

Not necessarily. Even if he plays in the match, he will still be eligible for Man City in Europe.
It's difficult to predict an outcome here. Man City obviously want him and are willing to pay a lot of money, but Spurs want to keep him and have him under contract until 2024. Meanwhile Kane wants to leave, but won't want to alienate the Spurs fans too much in case he is forced to stay.

If Kane plays for Tottenham in Thursday’s game in Portugal, he will still be able to play for any team in the Champions League from the group stage onwards this season, as per UEFA rules.

Yes, the cost of the war was astronomical, and yes a few thousand US troops died... but just abandoning a country to its fate when you decide you've had enough is not a great decision either tactically or ethically. This could become a disaster, with a sizable proportion of the population running for the border while they still can. And who will get the blame if al Qaida rise again? All fingers will point in one direction.

They weren't able to "fix" it in 20 years. It should be obvious by now that more soldiers and more money isn't gonna do anything positive, just increase the resentment towards occupying forces. I bet there are numerous countries in the world who would happily take the billions of dollars and put them to much better use than drones and bombs.

Yeah, I'm not disagreeing. They needed to get out, and the exit was always going to be messy... it's just that it didn't have to be quite this bad. They should never have gone into Afghanistan in the first place, but once you're in, and when you've been there for twenty years, you have a duty to the people of the country to make the exit as painless as possible... which is not what's happening. Some of the video footage is horrific.

Probably not. The Afghanistan military more or less put up no fight against the Taliban once Biden pulled American and allied troops out. The Taliban will take over the entire country in short order.

Seems the likely outcome, yes. I appreciate Biden has nearly half a century of experience, but has he really thought this through? It could quite easily become the defining action of his presidency.

Maybe next year we will see a farewell tour for Federer and I doubt that he will push for more to win another grand slams because his body is telling him to stop with lots of wear and operation on his body in the last 3 years.

It's incredible really that he still wants to carry on, and isn't content just to retire. He's 40 now, and turned professional in the last century! He's won everything there is to win many times over, and was the best in the world for a long time. To have all that, and still at the age of 40 to have such a huge hunger to carry on playing, when you've done everything that can be done, when it's been your whole life for decades, and when you are no longer quite at your previous peak... and he's still willing to go through the treatment and the long gruelling months of recovery just to attempt to get back to somewhere near a high level again... it's remarkable.
1396  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread 2021/2022 on: August 16, 2021, 12:27:50 PM
Chelsea [...] as for the EPL, they are certainly the best. They were good last year and now they are even better.

Chelsea and Manchester United are the strongest candidates this season

I don't think we can discount Man City... particularly if they get Kane, which is still a possibility.
But yes, Man U and especially Chelsea do look good. Lukaku is exactly what Chelsea need.

It will surely be these three plus Liverpool that take up the Champions League places. The only question really is what order they'll finish in.

You were doing  pretty good with the mental health funding.

But you lost me with the l such as no-one  is allowed to own a gun) proposition.

So no-one as in cops and military with out guns.

So I don't think you meant that.

You meant no civilians correct ?

It was just a general suggestion as to something that might be considered, rather than a fully thought-out recommendation. And yes, I meant civilians.
As an aside, the majority of police in this country do not carry guns anyway, but I can appreciate there are situations when it might be required. Same for military.
1399  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Does power really corrupt? on: August 15, 2021, 12:14:01 PM

*it always seems to be a 'him'.

Well, the gap between male politicians to female politicians up to this date is still huge, so the existence of corruption will be more noticeable to male species. In the future where the number of female to male politcians is almost equal or equal, only then we can have a data that will prove if gender is a related for this "CORRUPTION"

I should probably expand on my footnote. I'll start by saying that study after study has shown that innate differences between the male and female brain are either negligible or non-existent.

Obviously it has always been a 'him' because society has always unfairly placed men above women. We are making steps towards equality, but there is still a long way to go. However there is also the fact of societal gender roles. Aggression, ambition, and leadership, the sorts of characteristics that lead someone to want to become powerful, are traditionally expected male characteristics. A woman who is aggressive and ambitious is often seen (or portrayed) as straying beyond her prescribed role, likewise a man who is kind and nurturing.

What I am saying is that if for example we applied positive discrimination such that 50% of politicians are male and 50% female, then I think it would still be overwhelmingly men who become the corrupt autocrats... because of ingrained gender expectation. So it is not enough to apply equality simply in percentage terms, there is still the underlying issue to address: what society expects. I think we are making progress on this as well, but it's not generally as visible.

And personally I believe that someone — regardless of gender — who exhibits the more traditionally female characteristics might make the best leader.

Hey Cnut237, do you realize how our preconceptions make us filter the facts? Faced with this mass shooting fact, my response has been "no, we don't need more regulations." and your response has been "we need more public funding."

Who would have thought it, lol.

Yes, I noticed that. Smiley

Health provision in the UK is publicly funded*. We need better mental health provision. So we need more public funding. It doesn't necessarily have to be new money, just redirecting some of the £205 billion they use for spending on phallic metaphors might be a good start.

And more stringent rules on gun ownership (such as, no-one is allowed to own a gun), might also be a sensible idea. There is no need for anyone in the UK to own a gun. We don't have dangerous wildlife, no bears or hippos etc. You don't need an AK-47 to fend off a disgruntled pigeon.

*yes, by the taxpayer.
