For the record: I'm buying.

Thank you Gox.
522  Economy / Speculation / Re: And who is buying now? on: February 07, 2014, 11:14:11 AM
I am.
523  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 07, 2014, 10:58:44 AM
so what do all the people do with the GOX $ now?

I'm guessing withdrawals to Yen are still working.

Not really. Withdrawals problems have spread to all currencies: EUR, JPY, etc.

One importante question arises: WHERE THE FUCK IS KARPELES?
524  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: amir taaki on bbc :( on: February 07, 2014, 10:42:04 AM
As I said in the other thread on this topic

They interview him on purpose. Incoherent, unpresentable & controversial. Exactly what they know their audience won't relate too. They can count on him to make Bitcoin look bad without even trying.

Have you seen the interview?

Q. How can Bitcoin make the world a better place?
A. Because a 9 year old kid in Iran can download it and then start a gambling website.

Thanks Amir...

(I guess he would be OK talking at colleges/young adults that he could relate to more.)

This is the whole fucking point. Bitcoin doesn't care if you're a 9 year old kid in Iran running a gambling website. Bitcoin doesn't care if the BBC calls it satan's spawn. It will have no significant impact on bitcoin whatsoever, excepting maybe minor temporary unimportant and expected price fluctuations.

Lol. Like Today? Bitstamp 649 Dollars per BTC. Fuck.

One year ago, exactly 12 dollars per BTC.

$12 to $649 in one year? It looks like Amir is doing quite well, as he's been giving interviews non-stop on BBC and other mainstream media outlets since 2011.
525  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: amir taaki on bbc :( on: February 06, 2014, 09:01:09 PM
At least he's got balls putting his voice out there. And he clearly is passionate, but I do not think he's the best spokesperson for bitcoin, and that's perhaps why some media outlets wants him to speak about bitcoin..

But as a community we cannot decide who can speak about bitcoin, and who cannot. He's got his face and identity out there, while most of us sit here semi-anonymous and deliver criticism, I guess that any of us, if we wanted to could take on a more active and public role for bitcoin if we wanted to do that.

But some of the things that he says is a bit far out, and also he's not coherent in all his line of thought, and his presentation is not very professional, so perhaps the image BBC wants to portray is that bitcoin is run by a gang of punks and not to be taken seriously?

I understand he is passionate. We all are. But, Amir accepts to go on a national TV station, which has millions of viewers, and then just talks a load of incoherent non-sense for 5 minutes. That's not going to persuade viewers at home to start buying or even researching bitcoin.

Surely there are more professional and knowledgble people in the UK to talk about bitcoin?

I listened to the video, but unfortunately it was too painful too watch. Shame.

You are a noob indeed as your name suggest, so you probably should STFU before throwing shit to one of the persons who has made crucial contributions to BTC.

And no, there's no "more professional and knowledgeable" people in the UK to talk about Bitcoin. He has been a key Bitcoin developer since early on and his current projects (dark wallet, stealth addresses) are some of the most important and exciting developments for BTC..

Last but not least, he understands Bitcoin perfectly and he says what is need to be said. He is not wearing "like a trump", he  lives in anarchists communities and probably doesn't give a fuck about what you might consider fancy clothes, you should probably listen to what he has to say instead of judging him by his looks.

Finally, this is not his best interview, but we need more Amirs and less snakes like some of the top members of the foundation who are only interested in their fiat profits - amir is the opposite and probably Satoshi is proud of him. Do not forget why Bitcoin was created.

And of course, our blog is at blog.ethereum.org

Yep, no more questions will be answered in an unmoderated thread, better to address questions in an "OP-moderated" thread.

These thread was unmoderated and I've seen NO trolling nor abuse, just both critics and supporters. Why a moderated thread?
527  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Help i want to create my own Altcoin! on: February 05, 2014, 08:24:15 AM
I want to create a coin witch is not mineable! So for example i choose to release 100 million coins. Then all 100 million coins will be directly in my wallet! After that i will start selling them! What do you think about this?

We think that you are exploring a whole new level of stupidity.
528  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Blockchain.com Shared send feature gone????? on: February 04, 2014, 04:22:24 PM
what if the dice site gives out your received and destination address to the FBI?

Why would I mind? I have not done anything illegal.
Besides, FBI probably have all my addresses already.

Its a matter of principle. The fact you have nothing to hide doesn't justify those motherfucking creeps sticking their nose on your stuff.

Privacy is golden, and WE need to value it - otherwise we will cry when its gone for good.

This is why you just do not use Skype or any google product: use Jitsi for Voip (I convinced all my family and co-workers to do this) and alternate services as startpage.com for searches or MyKolab for emails. Again: its not a matter of having "something to hide", its a matter of protecting your privacy which is usually equal to protecting your very freedom.

Vitalik, anthony and I brought the original team together and the whitepaper did the rest. I don't know what to think of these Nxt people to be honest. Apparently our tech sucks, Nxt is better. We have been Co - opted by evil bankers yet our entire team is transparent unlike certain other teams of 71 Smiley oh and vitalik is a time traveling android sent from a dystopian future (Btw there is seriously a graphic novel coming out about it called vitalik ad 2134).

Levity aside, use common sense and good judgment. When we release the prospectus and business plan read them and do your due diligence. Look at our partners and strategy and most importantly our technology. There are some enormous frustrations in the financial world with how things are structured. It's unfair and corrupt also totally inaccessible to billions of people. Don't you think at least 2 people from the industry would like to be on a project that makes the world a better, more fair place?

I understand how you guys feel. I really do see a lot of frustration and anger in these forums. I felt the same when I was in the Ron Paul movement back in 2008. It was terrible to feel helpless and ignored. The difference today is that we have technology that can accomplish anything you want. I just want the community to help us build it, protect it and evolve it to meet the challenges of then future.

The problems we face are now too complex for a single  hacker to resolve. They require a community, large investments in time and resources as well as a dream for a better world. Set the IPO aside and all the other petty grievances and help me make ethereum.

So you DO have Goldman Sachs folks in Ethereum? And you aren't even ashamed about admitting it?

Think what Satoshi would think about that. Really.

name a thing that costs less on the black market than it costs in a free market. One thing...
Marijuana.

You do realize that Cali or Amsterdam are NOT free markets - right?
531  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: January 31, 2014, 11:29:08 AM
While I appreciate what you're saying, and agree with some of it, you can't run to the SEC every time something happens you don't like.

I agree completely, and I have no intention to "run" to the SEC. Furthermore, if I was 19 like Vitalik is, I'd probably decide to get rich first and then deal with the SEC or whatever. The sensible thing is to remember that that did not play very well for Charlie Shrem, but a handful of millions are well worth the risk for most youngesters.

Regarding the model: business is business, and the founders have found a huge business opportunity. They have realized people is demanding get rich quick schemes and is willing to throw their money to whoever comes up with the next thing that smells of innovation and triple digit % gains. You can see how colored coins get less attention than MSC... Why? The answer is very simple: greed. MSC is marketed as the "ultimate investment" (as Ethereal is), colored coins isn't.

In the world I come from, companies make IPO's when they already have a product that works. Before that, you have private investments, seed capital, whatever - but you do not go public.

What's happening is pure madness in my book. Profitable madness? Probably, but its unsustainable in the long term. I think the team behind Ethereal is very valid and that what they are proposing is a needed innovation, but I just cannot help disliking the funding model - it creates too many negative incentives.
532  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I finally figured out how the government can destroy Bitcoin on: January 31, 2014, 11:14:52 AM
Quote
how the government can destroy Bitcoin

1. "Issue Guidance"
2. Threaten legal action against exchanges, miners and users
3. Done

Total expenses: less than $100k

That will not completely destroy it, but will make it illegal on par with drugs.
That will also cover all other cryptos and alike.
To predict what government will do, you need to think the way government does.

True, and we all know that by making them illegal the Gov. has "destroyed" drugs, its almost impossible to find them and when you found them they cost nothing. Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

But yes, if Gov. would "ban" bitcoin expect as similar scenario as we have with drugs - first thing, a very high price.
533  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: January 31, 2014, 10:57:37 AM
I am newbie but realy interested in this project. I think that If they were expecting at least 500BTC from IPO and that would be enough for them, so  why it would'nt be enough if ppl invest more? I would suggest premine 500BTC worth ethers = 10000000*0,5 for ther expenses no matter how much total investment will be. Or at least their % share should gradualy decerase along with the increase of the overall amount of investment. It would encourage more investors and give bigger chance for project to be succesfull - everybody would be happy  Smiley

I say get rid of the premine altogether as it immediately dilutes investors Ether right from the start.

Raising money via an IPO AND 50% premine is what most people are complaining about...

There's been no good valid explanation for the 50% premine.

Yes, there is: greed.

Don't underestimate the power of that very reason.

I really do not like the "IPO" model - I wonder what Satoshi would think about that. We all know that if the technology is truly revolutionary and it sticks out, the founders will be greatly rewarded by being the very early adopters. This "IPO" thing is just a way to get rich quick while unloading the full risk on investors. Instead of working first and then harvest the fruits later, people prefers to gather the money first and then work - this model is spreading because people is realizing they can get away with it. A very "open source" model if you ask me.

The MSC "IPO" was quite a joke, with the founder "investing" on his project by sending +1,000 BTC to an address that he controlled himself.... It looks like Ethereum will take that model to a whole new level.

The saddest thing? You can bet they will raise thousands of BTC, which is a pity indeed, because it gives a strong incentive for people to replicate over and over this faulty model fueled by greed (both investor's and founder's greed), at least until the SEC steps in.

Friendly advice to the founders: the SEC will step in eventually, maybe not now but in a year or two, do not even dare to think this is play money and that you will get away unscattered by raising millions of $$ by selling unregulated securities.

Also I removed mtgox from my graphs. It seems they trade with fake fiat they don't really have in backup which causes paradox price movements not confirmed with other exchanges.

It looks like this is the case indeed.

So this random addy I grabbed off of blockchain.info currently has BTC15.14013694 in it. Since it has sent BTC before, it's public key is now shown, and thus hackable?

Can you prove it by finding the private key yourself, and moving BTC0.00123456 out and back into the address? I want to see a show. Smiley

Interesting. Let's see what Evil can pull out from this.

also, in the second video, Charles Lee raises a point that although bitcoin may be potentially vulnerable to attack from large foreign powers, the USA equally has the power and resources to secure the system. That could be critical if the USA needs to make a decisive decision to back Bitcoin.

LOL. They would start an ASIC farm and grab 40% of the hashing power, then they would say "We need over 51% so that we can fuck with the known terrorist wallets!"
Then they would gain 51%, and get really confused when BTC instantly crashes to $0 and nearly all the value travels to Litecoin, Namecoin, and DOGE.

"Hmm? But we're from the government, we're here to help! Why don't you want our AML help?"

DOGE? You must be joking.
537  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: January 25, 2014, 08:50:36 PM
I have to say I'm disgusted by this so called Ethereum fundraiser, i know they will make a lot of money simply because of the crypto currency craze. I don't doubt the technology but i think it is wrong to exploit people this way, i know for a fact this money will be used so that this small group of people buy homes, cars, and secure their financial future. On top of the fundraiser they want to own 50% of Ethereum, plus they want ongoing salary. Really this is disgusting.

If these people had ethics they would've capped the investment so that it covers their expenses and a little bit more, but they just want to become millionaires overnight. I bet you they are so excited about this because they know just how rich they are about to become.

I mean look at the idiots giving 100's of BTC to the daily IPO scams that go on here, everyday someone makes a IPO posts, ppl give them BTC one week later they run away.  i'm not saying Ethereum is a scam, it is definitely real but just goes to show how much of a craze crypto is.

it is also sad that the people making these projects are just pure greedy, rather than actually wanting to create real change and revolution like Satoshi did.

Unfortunately there is a whole lot of truth in this post.
538  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: January 23, 2014, 11:12:32 PM
  • After the fundraiser closes, the total sum of ether produced will be denoted as X and we will instantiate a premine of 0.50*X for the fiduciary members, early stakeholders, strategic partners, a pool for use between the conclusion of the fundraiser and the launch of mining and finally a long term endowment. Specific percentages will be discussed in the Prospectus to be released on the day of the fundraiser (Feb 1st)

A premine? 50% of the whole supply? REALLY?

Isn't the massive amount of BTC you will probably gather in the IPO enough?

It seems to me that greed is taking over.
539  Other / Meta / Re: End of newbie restrictions; ban changes on: January 23, 2014, 02:12:43 PM
I definitely like the idea of ending newb restrictions, they were definitely keeping a lot of users from the site. The four hour wait/post requirement was pretty brutal, I remember posting mostly useless replies to get past that. I do think it is necessary to have a "Newbie/Beginners" section though as it was definitely a good net for spam and basic bitcoin questions.

When I first registered to the forum I was surprised by the "newbie jail", but the truth is that I enjoyed it - I made my first "newbie questions" in that area and I didn't spam the other subforums with my naive/stupid/n00bish doubts that had been answered a million times befores.

The "newbie jail" also encourages the use of the SEARCH function, as you are kinda forced to look for the information you are looking for, no restrictions on the contrary kinda encourages to be spoon fed.

IMO the most important change that has been done is the one related to Tor use - no more ip bans for established accounts. That's really something, participating in these forums through Tor was a pain in the ass if you were an active poster.
540  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to backup Google Authenticator? on: January 23, 2014, 01:53:23 PM
Print the QR code and store it in a safe place. Before activating 2-fa check that the QR you printed can be scanned by GA.

This is the best simple solution to keep a backup. You can also take a photo and store your photos on Evernote or similar cloud service.

I wouldn't recommend Evernote or a similar cloud service - you would be trusting your very valuable backup to the servers of a third party (in this case Evernote), and thus you have to assume that at some point somebody could hack their servers and access the information you stored on them.

If storing the backup on the cloud is a "must", then I would definitely recommend to use strong encryption to protect the backup before uploading it. The attack vector that lead to one of the biggest thefts in BTC's history (allinvain's 25k BTC theft) was very probably an unencrypted wallet.dat stored on dropbox.
