Do you have a white paper explaining the protocol?
I understand the code is not open source, right?

Thanks,
Ittay

Im going to tell him all the details on the source release and awful state of the whitepaper.  I dont believe the encryption stuff has changed since the earlier version of the client that was released and between what we are running now has it?

opti before you go on is he worth 10 BTC? Smiley

Have you not read his credentials??? My response:

The source code for client version 0.4.7e was released 10 days ago, it is available at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=345619.msg4287127#msg4287127 and while there have been newer released versions which have not had source released, the signing algorithms that we need expert audit of have not changed.  And it is possible for a java decompiler to decompile the latest version 0.5.5 at http://download.nxtcrypto.org/nxt-client-0.5.5.zip if you so desire to do so.

Unfortunately there is no official white paper however there is very very early draft available at:
http://wiki.nxtcrypto.org/wiki/Whitepaper:Nxt#NXT:_a_peer-to-peer_digital_economy_system

But unfortunately, as I said, it is an extremely early version with no math/proofs in it.  There is also an article I am submitting to coindesk/bitcoinmagazine available at
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1U8lMf-zpmfPYdMydSJ_NSlD5Pp9H4WYSGl-gjRwegW4

In detail, our lead developer has stated: "We need security review of Crypto and Curve25519 classes. Also Transaction.sign/verify and Block.sign/verify should be checked. And I would like to hear opinion if NRS algo could be vulnerable to attacks described in http://eprint.iacr.org/2007/357.pdf"

We can point you to the sections in the source code that are relevant to your critique should you be interested.

Thanks,

Another update.  He asked for a few day to go over all the info i gave him.  Not sure if that means he will do it for sure or if it means he wants to read all our info first

If anyoe else reacjes out to anyone else who agrees to do the work please let me know iif the accept so i can tell him that we found someone already

The use of 64 bit encryption anywhere is a FATAL FLAW that prevents anyone from taking NXT seriously. FIX IT!  Cry

 Cheesy
Is that a sign of disagreement or lulz for me being nervous sitting on my non-future-proof NXT?

64-bit encryption is only used for accounts that have no public key and haven't done any transactions. It is recommended to make public key and do at least one transaction. Send someone some NXT, buy an alias, basically I think any proactive usage of the account gives 256 bit protection

How do I make public key?
pay at least 1 NXT fee for any kind of transaction
743  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Transparent mining, or What makes Nxt a 2nd generation currency on: January 13, 2014, 10:51:17 PM
To store coins in cold just send them to an account that u don't use. U must send at least 1 NXT to any account from cold account to reserve ur account id.

What if I don't send any NXT to some other address but create 1 or more aliases, does that count as ID-reserving transaction(s)?

yes, anything that causes you to spend NXT would generate a public key on the blockchain

neither.  Its just this issue has been "hashed" out here so many different times that its just surprising to see it come up again like it does when people wig out about "it"

Well, we got 10 BTC (https://blockchain.info/address/1LLe2He9k8r8WnAnuXJbAUedX8c2HCr8bQ)

Let me know when u need them to pay. I suppose we should pay 5 BTC in advance?
To get scammed again? We should hire profis, and they should wait until they deliver.

Ittay Eyal is not macos. 50/50 is the standard pay for this kind of job in REAL world.

I think he was talking about cunicula.  He pretty much ran off with (i forgot howmuch NXT) and NXT would be more respected at this point IMO if we had a white paper describing the protocol.

...You said: "this can be counteracted by some mechanisms of advanced consensus..."  But I thing that in the moment that we talk about consensus, we have the 51% problem over the table again...

Yes, when will we hear more of this?  It seems if it is not addressed then there is a risk?  what is the state of things in this regard now?

i guess im just too dense but I dont get how its supposed to work.  I see that you send a message from your private account and the API gave you back a TXID but doesnt the receiver need to use their passphrase to decode it??  You example Ive just quoted just have get Transaction.  Is it not encrypted?

Al right so far for an independent review of NXT algorithm, we have some suggestions

1. Andrea Antonopoulos
2. I suggest Emin Gün Sirer at Hacking Distributed http://hackingdistributed.com/
3. Another great suggestion by msin is Steve Weis http://saweis.net/

It is better to contact several of them to see who is interested. Name it if someone has another suggestion. Cfb and Luc are you going to contact them ? Also what kind of review do you have in mind ?

How about those guys from Cornell that published their paper on the 25%/33% selfish-mining "feature" of gaming bitcoin blocks?

That's him Emin gun sirer and his students.

Also

Here is what I just emailed him

Hello Ittay,  My group and I are very impressed with your paper of the bitcoin 25/33 selfish mining risk.  We would like to offer you a fee of 10BTC to examine a few hundred lines of java code that is the base of the crypto currency called NXT.  Specifically, we would like a critique of the sha256 and curve25519 implementations used for block signing and other transaction processing.

Your credentials makes you perfect for this task.  Please let me know your availability or if you are not interested, possibly you can recommend someone who would be interested in getting involved with our project for the same 10BTC fee.

Thanks!

What is the right word? I am trying to balance technical accuracy with conveying the appropriate concept to the reader.

I think "fee dividend" is probably about the best one (it conveys the idea that you get something because of your investment without the idea that that something "comes from nothing").

Yes, that is pretty good. Also due to the variability each person gets a different rate, easier to understand the rate difference if it is a dividend (which is expected to vary) as opposed to interest (which is expected to be stable)

My issue with using the term "interest" stems mainly from the fact that the paragraph starts out talking about bitcoin, and how it doesnt have interest, and how NXT does.  but really its possible to mine for transaction fees in bitcoin.

I think one thing the whitepaper doesnt touch on and which may be appropriate for this particular section we are discussing is how with NX, your balance is what mines for you, not ASICS. (since you are discussing deficiencies of bitcoin)

Feel free to swipe some more material on the article that I wrote for bitcoinmagazine that still hasnt been published. https://forums.nxtcrypto.org/viewtopic.php?style=1&f=2&t=276

And Ive created a wiki board in forums.nxtcryto.org and also put a post in there for us to offload whitepaper discussion from this thread

Editing Wiki now.  This will take some time.  Also, we need to discuss the "interest" thing.  I dont really like that, especally compared to bitcoin.  Its not interest, its the same thing as bitcoin processing blocks for transaction fees.  What do you all think?

We'll see a fork soon, some nodes run old NRS without AM support...

I suggest have the feature ready two or more versions before the upgrade announcement in the future. That's, we can enable AM in version 0.5.3, 0.5.4 and we announce it in 0.5.5. So I think most people have already updated to 0.5.3, so the fork probability will decrease a lot.

potentially we could write in a feature for the client to periodically check an alias directed to a webpage.  This would enable a method to broadcast messages to people to move off the old client or they will go off on a fork.  Heh.  It could even write some data that causes to crash the client at block 44000/whatever.

Interesting that the account number 12968364353024827435 sent 100,000 NXT to the account 100000. He is the owner of the domain Gridcoinnetwork.org.
I would like to know if he knows the password for the ID 100000 or did he sent it as a gift for the one who will get the account in the future.  Huh

My bet is that he doesnt know the password to that one  most likely that was a typo when he sent the same amount of coins to the field used for address

does nxt handle 256 character passphase?

I believe the cutoff is 100 characters.  But I dont believe there is anything preventing the use of a wallet.dat type client with 256bit long keys

The NXT Foundation will at not cost to you manage your VPS; this offer comes with a custom SCREENNAME.vps.nxtcrypto.org domain name visible in peer lists!  All you hae to do is pay for the VPS and we will do the rest.

1) Sign up https://www.budgetvm.com/account/cart.php?gid=64  They accept PayPal.  Or use Digital Ocean.  Or use any other provider.  You need at least 1024MB of RAM on the VPS though.

2) The 1024MB VPS for $4.99/month should be sufficient unless you have a hallmark balance with more than 1,000,000 NXT, in that case please choose the 2048MB VPS for $9.99/month

3) When signing up for a VPS, when they ask for a hostname for your VPS, enter in: SCREENNAME.vps.nxtcrypto.org

4) When selecting an OS, please choose Debian6 x64

5) Send a Private Message in the NXT Foundation Forums to user forkedchain.  The Forums are at http://forums.nxtcrypto.org and in the PM please include the VPS's IP address, root password, and your generated hallmark for hostname SCREENNAME.vps.nxtcrypto.org.  You can generate your hallmark at https://localhost:7875/admin.html but please do this in private browsing mode so that your passphrase isnt cached to your disk

6) The NXT Foundation will 100% manage the VPS for you; you will still have shell access and I will give you a script on your server you can run ant any time to check your server at any time

All, thanks to abctc and xyzzyx for taking me up to manage their VPSs, please remember, its only $4.99/month and I do all the rest!
