761  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbies are free to choose the journey they will go on: July 12, 2020, 12:06:40 AM
I can't say I blame newcomers who turn up and instantly start raping this place. It takes time to figure out that many people care about it and get proper narked at those who don't. To a new arrival it's just another stop on the internet with some potential for mad gainz, most of which are gone now, for now at least.

When you take the time to digest what's here then it becomes a tad more nuanced. There's something more honest about someone who over time went from a shitposter to a valued member than some obsequious creep who instantly courts their audience.
762  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Selling Casascius 1 BTC 2013 Gold/Brass Coin. on: July 11, 2020, 11:42:07 PM
Still of interest but it's a market that's a lot less hot than it used to be. You can check prices in this section.

You will likely get more money on Ebay, but you also will be undertaking a humongous risk. I wouldn't dare it myself.

$20,000 is way above what any 1 BTC coin will fetch here. Premiums have collapsed and they're often no more than what you'd get for peeling the coin and selling the shitforks on it.

Just to be certain, is this a brass coin or a silver coin with gold highlights? The latter will fetch more but still not what you're looking for.
763  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin for a few...! on: July 11, 2020, 11:35:39 PM
Maybe because the majority are used to banks and other financial institutions and simply are not yet ready to start using Bitcoin which implies being your own bank.

For better or worse it'll be bank involvement that draws more people in. That's what they're used to and they're unlikely to change now. The best we can hope for is that enough people choose to take control for themselves, but for some it's better if someone continues to hold their hand.
764  Economy / Speculation / Re: $BTC Balance on Exchanges on: July 11, 2020, 11:03:09 PM
I had absolutely no idea the number was that high, even though that's a record low.

I would guess that boredom is one of the main drivers. There's been no action of note for weeks now. People slowly drift away.

A more telling stat would be how much fiat is parked and waiting. Impossible to know of course.
765  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Coinbase on: July 11, 2020, 10:44:23 PM
Will there be any audit on price manipulation or how to evaluate crypto assets? Or rather how will the market value be estimated?
I am sure that there is a lot of manipulation in the prices of some cryptocurrencies, if it is not in Bitcoin it will be in altcoins.

The only thing the shareholders and potential buyers will care about is how many dollars they make and how many they'll make in future. Crypto is no more than the vehicle they use to make them.
766  Local / India / Re: Cashaa hacked. 336 BTC Stolen. on: July 11, 2020, 10:33:15 PM
It's bound to happen though, they are involving themselves with huge amount of bitcoin, but they don't know how to protect them.

It's bleedin' obvious. Get a hardware wallet. It's hardly a well kept secret. I guess they reasoned spending 0.001 BTC made less sense than losing 336.

Coincheck decided the same and that cost them $500 million. Some fascinating reasoning.

I could just about wrap my head around the idea of some crappy service that occasionally dabbled in BTC being lazy enough to use blockchain.info. An exchange? Sheesh.
767  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What or how does it feels to grow in rank?! on: July 11, 2020, 10:29:39 PM
Here is an account of the place of emotion which cannot be measured in terms of money. It is as dear to many as their own child. It's a place of feeling that works well as the child improves when he grows up. It may not be the same for everyone. Improving my account gives me another level of joy that cannot be expressed in words.

Getting a bit hot and heavy there.

If people here lost the account they had progressed with, would they start again and build another one?

I don't think I could be arsed myself. A man or woman can only brush the face of immortality and unfettered genius a few times in their life.
768  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: 20-Year-Old Robinhood Customer Dies By Suicide After Seeing A $730,000 Negative on: July 11, 2020, 08:31:48 PM
It's crazy that someone is trading on this exchange and doesn't know about this. I can't understand how this guy didn't do something first, like ask support, call them, I don't know... Why would he raise his hand on himself before even trying to sort things out?

Perhaps he was inclined towards extremely volatile emotions anyway. Perhaps this situation was the first to put himself in a position where they could harm him. Something like this certainly would if you didn't take the time to breathe and think.

It wasn't a rational act to get started trading knowing nothing. It got less rational from then on.
769  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where has DPRs bitcoin gone ? on: July 11, 2020, 08:12:17 PM
I've seen mentions of Ulbricht having more coins somewhere. It does seem a bit barmy to have them all accessible from one place but then again he made plenty of slip ups.

Do you have proof of this said premium?

- most likely not, because its not happening. Bitcoin does not differentiate the bits. Freshly mined blocks still contain fees, so they are not truly "virgin blocks" anyway. and there would be no way to tell which bits you are sending or receiving.

I've seen it mentioned many times. It seems outlandish but I can also believe it.

It'll be legacy finance that'll be most interested in it as they'll somehow believe it's unsullied and therefore carries less 'risk'. If you're looking to sell it in future to your other legacy buddies, or repackage it and sell to normies like GBTC they might believe it'll give them a sales edge or quieter life.
770  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Is there any limit or holding stable coins.....? Any risk of hodl the max coins? on: July 11, 2020, 07:47:01 PM
That is the risk of holding USDT, if they see you are holding a huge amount or they think you are suspicious they can freeze any account/wallet which is not good for holders. USDT is useful on trading but holding it in a wallet? I don't think that is a good idea, most of the stablecoins have that ability to freeze any account.

The only circumstances where I'd touch USDT would be leaving it on an exchange for a very short period of time before going back into a proper coin. It wouldn't occur to me to store it in my own wallet, and definitely not for a long stretch. I don't trust ETH a great deal more. I'd rather it was the exchange's problem, not mine, and not for very long.
771  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Cryptotalk Future on: July 11, 2020, 07:40:29 PM
I thought cryptotalk will be a ghost forum but do they still maintain same activity as before?

I have no idea how accurate this site is.

https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/cryptotalk.org

But it ain't looking too rosy on the basis of their analysis.

If they wanted to keep it perky, effectively shutting down money making for several months is not going to aid that.
772  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: IRS seeks info on tracing privacy coins, LN transactions for pilot program on: July 11, 2020, 07:35:25 PM
Should that be any sort of surprise by now? It's one of their areas of expertise. They're going to capitalise on it.

I'd love to know how they're going to crack the dedicated privacy coins. Sounds a tad optimistic to me but you never know what they have hidden away. I wonder if the secret service gets their money back if Coinbase admits to being stumped.
773  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [UPDATED] PSA: Most Stablecoins Can Be Frozen, Even in Your Own Wallets on: July 11, 2020, 07:31:12 PM
USDT is a coin which can be remotely frozen or seized, is constantly being devalued by endless printing, and is only partially backed up by USD which in itself is also constantly being devalued by endless printing. I would be surprised that people are still using it, but then again, that's still not as bad as some altcoins.

You can still get a dollar or a dollar's value for it. That's what it's for and that's all that people care about.

I'm really amazed it's continued to grow but it's just another illustration of the willingness of people in this space to make the same old mistakes, and some sexy new ones.
774  Economy / Economics / Re: How long will it take banks to phase out physical cash completely? on: July 11, 2020, 12:04:44 PM
Even in Sweden, I think we're finding that getting to 80% or 85% cashless usage happened fast but that adoption is now tapering off. And like I said there is growing concern for vulnerable communities:

It's good that it's giving them pause for thought. If they realised it wasn't all sweetness and light after it had been fully exterminated it's not the type of thing people can gather the will to reinstate.

I suspect the rabid economists who want it will be brought to heel by those looking out for real people.
775  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Buying food or groceries with Bitcoin on: July 11, 2020, 10:19:55 AM
Unless you're desperate I can't see a time when anyone will want to spend their hoard on consumables. It's simply not how humans are programmed.

Imagine paying 50 BTC for a tank of gas in 2011. You got 3-400 miles of forward motion vs a very nice house a few years later.

There'll come a time where the gains are much lower but it'll still always deflate. It'll be the very last thing you want to spend on everyday trivialities.
776  Economy / Economics / Re: How long will it take banks to phase out physical cash completely? on: July 11, 2020, 10:14:09 AM
It's completely country dependent. Some like Sweden are nearly there already. Others like Japan are nowhere near it.

In the UK they've pledged to keep it alive as millions of oldies don't know any different. They wanted to kill off cheques too but had to roll that back when they realised millions of people still use them.

Really?

Phase out cash? and what for?

To increase control and surveillance of course. A fully digital currency will be a one stop shop to mess with our lives.
777  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [UPDATED] PSA: Most Stablecoins Can Be Frozen, Even in Your Own Wallets on: July 11, 2020, 08:56:41 AM
My guess for those moves are theft, technical reasons and general housekeeping.

Since they have an official burning process there's no need to blacklist anything to 'remove' them. That also increases paranoia about their activities, which they probably don't care about, but I doubt anyone would want to foster it.

778  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: PSA: Most Stablecoins Can Be Frozen, Even When in Your Own Wallets on: July 11, 2020, 12:20:40 AM
i was surprised to find out recently that tether has actually blacklisted significantly more. there are dozens of blacklisted (frozen) addresses totalling ~8 million USDT. https://twitter.com/PhABCD/status/1281054838172848128

I presume most of that is straightforward theft more than anything, as quite possibly the USDC one is too. Some are theorising in that Twitter thread about there being something wrong with the addresses themselves but I know zilch about ETH and wouldn't think that was possible. Nowt would surprise me though.
779  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: USDT to Bypass FX Control in China on: July 10, 2020, 10:30:01 PM
Are you or anyone in your family Chinese? I certainly would not want to do a P2P transaction there without a native speaker to hand. I presume trading in China takes place on completely different platform to what we're used to. They've had a long time to develop their own options that are safe from the great firewall.
780  Economy / Speculation / Re: Miner's Strike! on: July 10, 2020, 09:30:44 PM
It was boring and dead after the previous halving. Same this time. The excitement is over. No halving hype. No virus terror any more either. That type of spasm can only happen once.

As for miners, any sensible miner sells their coin off market. There's no need to go on an exchange. OTC will take care of it. They're a market irrelevance.
