I thought Atlas was an interesting story. But she likes to exhault the virtuous side of the guilded age wealthy elites while glossing over the awful outcomes it brought most Americans. She has to invent greedy government agencies and forget about the profound greed that brought down the markets in the 20's. I think "There will be blood" is a better look into the minds of such barrons.

I'm sorry but she didn't have to invent these agencies, she grew up in the SovietUnion and knew full well what the application of communism was, besides today do you not see Atlas shrugged playing out in slow motion?
Fair enough. But her devotees seem to think this is how America was in the twenties. With the downtrodden wealthy fighting the good fight against the "ministry of science". In fact the rail, oil, and steel industries were practically criminal enterprises. Chewing up and spitting out workers via the "company town" system.
I do not see this happening now either. Companies are gaining power over our lives not loosing power to the government. I don't fear the government because they are incompetent.  I do fear business, because they are efficient and would enslave us all if not for the rule of law.

How many of the victims had guns? Was this the third shooting this year in a "defenseless victim zone?"

Well, it was a Sikh temple, so it can be assumed they all had knives...

Yeah, I'm a little surprised considering being armed is a requirement of the religion. But I guess that is just dogmatic at this stage.
Well, it's getting harder for these nuts to find a place where people are unarmed. A gun is the only thing that can keep you safe from a gunman. If you are in a place that does not allow conceal carry, you could try running I guess?? But you will likely just die tired.

What we need is for the PPA to be installable via update manager like other programs. I don't understand why it's not a featured program in Ubuntu.

The character for the name Lin (林) pictures two rooted trees to imply a multitude of trees. Could this be a secret message about multiple identities on the internet? Or could it mysteriously mean nothing? spooky Shocked
8145  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A retort to the "Monopoly Money Argument" on: August 03, 2012, 02:14:04 PM
All money is Monopoly money because all money is just an arbitrary token in an arbitrary game.
My first thought also.

Hi, Just a heads up. Many people are about to come on this thread and imply you are a scammer. They are good guys, but have seen a million new accounts show up for a loan then disappear forever. If you are serious about this you will need to send your money first. You will only want to entertain loan offers from those who are highly trusted.
And Welcome new peer

MrCrappy, don't be so hard on yourself bro. This is the kind of thing that could happen to any of us.
8152  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Poll for Gun Control Advocates on: August 03, 2012, 01:44:22 PM
Am I the only one who counted "restrict them from kids" as gun control? Even without laws against it I'd want to stop anyone who knowingly gave guns to children.
I don't know this for a fact, but I bet almost all gun owners would agree with restrictions on children. That is the the law now in the U.S. If you are a child you can go hunting with a grown-up but can't carry a gun. Having said that, I got my first real gun when I was 10 and took it to the woods all the time. Smiley

That's interesting. Someone voted yes. I'd be very interested in hearing the story there.

Because it's a policeman.
Ha, that could be. My Dad was an FBI trained weapons expert and lifelong LEO. But he was in favor of gun control and the day he retired he was most excited about never having to keep track of his gun again.
8154  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Guns on: August 02, 2012, 05:54:25 PM
Why should a gun be useful for me to own one? Jet-skies are useless, dangerous toys with no redeeming value. Should they be outlawed? Certainly alcohol, porn, crocks shoes, eye liner, tattoos, Internet forums, sitcoms, etc... must all be banned for their lack of usefulness.
Of course those of you who are against guns tend to know the least about them. And I'm guessing that you have never seen real violence. If you had you might understand. If you lived in Syria you would beg and cry to be given a gun. But if you grew up in Belgium and never even touched a gun you get to decide what the rules should be? That does not make sense.

8156  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Guns on: August 01, 2012, 02:58:37 PM
Do you think cops should have guns? Why, they are people also. Cops use their guns to murder people and kill themselves just like others. They are also not necessarily good with a gun. I come from a family of cops and I know way more about guns than most cops.

8158  Economy / Economics / Re: How much do you value your credit score? on: July 31, 2012, 06:07:04 PM
I just think it is sort of a sucker score. My understanding is that if you always pay your debts you will have a decent credit score. But the dream customer not only pays, he/she also is prone to getting into debt. Being debt averse (arguably being responsible) will limit your score.
As far as not being able to get credit, so far this has not been a problem. I know the rating agencies say you must have a score. Just like the credit card companies say you need a card. They will say "How will you rent a car?".  Roll Eyes
If I wanted a score I could get it back quickly. Last time I had one the banks were ridiculous in their offers to me. The amounts they said I could borrow were way too much money. Someone has to be the grown-up and the banks are not up for that task.

Sweet. There is a hackerspace here in Madison. I may have to take the printer class now.
