841  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] official NovaCoin thread - the original PoS+scrypt coin. --POOL LIST-- on: July 19, 2014, 02:29:41 AM
I have a question on novacoin. I tried some multisig functions, but it seems something is not working. I tried to reproduce what Gavin did for BTC:
https://gist.github.com/gavinandresen/3966071

I created 3 pairs of private/public keys from addresses from one qt client, then used 3 public keys to create a 3-2 address. Send some coins to the address, then use createrawtransaction to create a spent tx.

Now if I sign this tx with one private key at a time, it is not working, the same tx is returned. If, however, I just signrawtransaction without explicitly the private key, it works (as all private keys are in this client), and then I can sendrawtransaction, and it did registered in the blockchain.

If I use 1 address from this qt client, and 2 other addresses from another qt, then I am unable to complete the signing of the tx. It is not working the signrawtransaction (just return the same unsigned one), as without explicitely giving privatekey means only 1 that is in this client.

The same process works in BTC. And I checked the code version, the protocol version nova uses is 600xx, while bitcoin uses 700xx. And the signrawtransaction code is different. Is this problem related to the old version? Does nova have the plan to upgrade the codebase to the latest bitcoin codebase?
I suppose that this commit will be helpful for your case:

https://github.com/CryptoManiac/novacoin/commit/b73a4568bb521678d2904cb514cac550846f8fab

It will be merged into the next release.

Thanks for this. I struggled with this a bit myself.  I think it will be important to mitigate counter-party risk.

I added this code a while back ago(missed listunspent), but still had a few issues. I also had to change sendrawtransactions (https://github.com/Tranz5/HoboNickels/commit/4f7f87375863f15ee22fa5624a0d7718cc7fee6b). The wallet will allow it to go through, but not accepted by the block chain.

I have only attempted it once, so might be something I did, but I will be curious how this works out for your users.

As always, thanks for your dedication.

IMP just took the lead with 3 mins left.  No last minute drive for HBN in this game.

Well they paid 400 for it, so I hope they enjoy it. :-)

Going on my 4th day of staking. No coins yet. I have a block of 6000 waiting. Not sure why its taking so long...

Blocks created before July 4th, will take the full 30 days to age. Blocks created after the 4th should stake in 15. The staking icon, unfortunately doesn't reflect this properly.

What would a good number for a pump be. 2 BTC to buy out the board up to 10k Satoshi or like 10 BTC to just constantly eat up whatever gets on the order as a reasonable price over time slowly buying upwards?

I would recommend not trying to manipulate the market because if it goes wrong you can lose big with that type of money. Just buy some if you need it and maybe have some decent buy orders that will catch dumpers.

Agreed.

Although if you were wanting to buy a lot quickly. I think the later can fill a big order quickly and help keep the price inflated for a while. Perhaps bringing in other investors or talent, which also yields further increases.

Or not..  Roll Eyes

Hey guys, for some reason I cannot connect to my wallet through windows anymore(socket select error 10038 in my debug file). This happens across all of my wallets so is an issue on my end. Could someone please build the latest HBN wallet for Mac for me Please
http://hobonickels.info/ will have 1.4.0.1.

What is in my github is still building towards 1.5, not completed yet. Not a lot to help with that specific error though.
851  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: HoboNickels - HBN - Fast High Reward PoS - Advanced Wallet - Fun Community. V1.4 on: July 15, 2014, 01:21:41 AM
So, if I understand correctly: if I have block that is more than 20000, I should split it. If I have blocks that are less than 500, I should merge with another one (in the context of optimising reward).
I am pretty certain I am wrong, let just check how far I am wrong Smiley

You can split blocks bigger then 20k to make sure your reward doesn't get truncated. The wallet will split it for you anyway and the next 10 days you will get whatever your max rewards is going to be.

Regarding combining to get the max, no this is not necessary at all. If you have 1 block of 10k, after 10 days you will get approx 270 coins reward for the stake. This is the max you can get. You are below the ceiling of 500 so you are good, you have realized the full reward of 2.7% over the 10 days.

If you have 1 block of 30k, after 10 days the old system would pay you 810 coins, but the new system you would only get 500.

Does that help clarify it?

Basically there is not much for anyone to do.  Just let the wallet do the work and you will be good.

Hi tranz,
From a marketing perspective I think hobonickels is not being promoted and adopted actively enough
More needs to be done. If mass adoption is to take place then,

The Nickels community needs more incentives to get it going.
I also think the 500 coin max limit wont help.

Not to be too worried about inflation. Other coins also face inflation with other costs such as mining/electricity
The Nickels dev team must first look at the cost/profit outcome for the entire nickel community. If the community does  not see profit they will dump this coin
A market place within the wallet also should be considered. All the devs are vying for this
From an economic perspective the 2% is also not going to help keep the community involved. Stakers dont want to keep thier coins staking at the cost of pc usage, electricity, and time. It is not economically feasible. The rewards must must offset the expense. Just like the flaw that bitcoin is not dealing with,(Cost of minig verse profit)

If what I am saying is nonsense then I want the Nickels community to watch the coins current marketcap. If the coin goes back to its marketcap highs then I wont post again here but if I am right then I still wont need to post here because the coin will be gone way down the marketcap rank or maybe even dead.
The competition in the coin market is too fierce now, thats why Nickels has been steadily in decline. Simply put Nickels needs to change or die

Remember success is based on incentives, incentives, incentives. The community needs incentives to keep this coin

Thanks for your feedback.

The 500 limit is not an incentive, it is a protection mechanism, see a few posts back.

I think the inflation rate is important, and I plan to keep to the original idea of the coin. 5 PoW forever and 100% degrading yearly PoS, starting at 10 days.  There is so little cost to stake, that at 100% yearly interest, it can be many magnitudes cheaper then electricity to run.

My opinion on the price has been noted many times, but let me re-iterate. If we go to zero, we go to zero. If we hit 100, then great. Either way my plans as developer do NOT change. I said I would put in 2 years when I started.  I am currently 9 months into it. So we still have a long way to go.

What ways specifically would you change to make this coin more competitive?
853  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: HoboNickels - HBN - Fast High Reward PoS - Advanced Wallet - Fun Community. V1.4 on: July 14, 2014, 09:23:54 PM
Another small idea would could be nice is a useful links section in the client. You could add a freenode chat link( which we could use for getting to know others in the community), the blockexplorer, this btcointalk thread, cryptsy trade, and maybe the main website all accessible from the client.

In my opinion the number one thing that needs to be thought about when adding anything to the wallet is SECURITY!

Even something as simple as links to outside web pages can be exploited. Simply by taking over the site and redirecting it to a Trojan download. People may not know, or they may believe it is safe, since it is part of their wallet.

So all of these things that are being put out here, I have thought about each and everyone one of them, some many months ago. Some of these may go forward, some may not, at least by me.
854  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: HoboNickels - HBN - Fast High Reward PoS - Advanced Wallet - Fun Community. V1.4 on: July 14, 2014, 09:16:17 PM
inb4 the next wallet has a billion features takes a year to download and sync and we find 500 bugs

If you aren't creating new bugs you aren't doing anything. Having said that, new features will be part of a beta test before they are rolled out. I test aas best as I can all aspect of the new wallet before it is released.

At block 1 million I can fully sync in under 12 hours.  Not bad..

I just tested the old TIX wallet I had, which was very similar to version 1.0 of HBN and so far I am 3 days into the block chain download at 700k. So we have made some vast improvements, and will continue to do so.

Here is my explanation for why this is necessary.

https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/13199-preparing-hbn-v15/?p=111539

This is of course up for discussion, but I think without it, there could be potential problems in the future.

QT5 build-ability added as requested.

Also, Windows 64 client is now ready! You must have Windows 64 Bit (exe will crash if not). It's runs MUCH better than the 32 bit varieties.

Make sure to backup before using this!!!

Windows 64 Bit Philosopherstone

Nice job on the 64 bit client.  Care to share the compile method and libs used?

Thanks!

Thank tokyo. Another question for everyone:

Having merchants that want to KEEP a coin is what can make it appreciate in value. If they simply accept them and then dump them for btc/usd the value stays the same, or perhaps even decreases.
Even bitcoin is not kept by merchants, AFAIK. Bookeeping requires fiat, how could the keep BTC? I guess this questions has been asked several time, please feel free to point me at any discussion relative to this topic.

By the way, I just twittered about allcoins.com and got a +50 votes for HBN as a consequence (new +50 vote tweet initiative). Since HBN is #2, it will probably soon be added (especially if other holders do the same). Then we could move to promoting the second high-PoS (currently CAP).
https://twitter.com/davidlatapie/status/488356762689736704

Finally, I started a comparison feature of familiar high-PoS. The goal is not competition (X is best than Y) but cross-fertilisation (X has feature A but not feature B that Y has; let's add it). Inspiration is the improvement in 3D video card after 3D benchmarks arrived in the 90's. I only added feature that are unambiguously beneficial (bold part, the italic part are just information and prone to change).
Proof-of-stake List - Features comparison (it is a multitabbed spreadsheet and this tab is a new one)

I see no reason a merchant/business couldn't keep BTC. Just declare the value of BTC to fiat at time of purchase. Then when the btc is used(converted) they would simply need to declare a capital loss/gain. At least that is how I understand it.

Thanks for the votes! And nice spread sheet. i am sure that could be handy for new users into the scene.

Version 1.5 is now being started. Please see this thread at CCT for updates as they happen. I expect a few months dev, q/a time, and relased in Q3 '14

If you have any comments feel free to post here or in the offical 1.5 thread.

https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/13199-preparing-hbn-v15/?p=110260

Thanks!

I have a suggestion for new wallet functionality:

A possibility to sent recurring transfers, like 10 HBN every day to some other wallet until you cancel it, or with an end date that you provide. Would be quite fancy and unique. (as far as I know being a newby)

+1
would be a great tool for organizing staking blocks, payouts to various things. I think this is a great idea!

EDIT: I like Jamesco's suggestion as well. Combine the two, and you've vastly improved the coin control features!

Stakeforcharity will already do this. I use it everyday 24/7.

A small feature I would like to see in the next update is a select dust option in coin control. Something that automatically selects blocks under a size amount, say 5 or something like that. Maybe even in the options menu you can select how big you want the dust size to be. This could make it easier to organise and combine smaller sized blocks.

Yes this will be fixed up as well. Better combine/split threshold, plus switches to allow users to control this, at least to some extent.
