I can't imagine any way to interpret the monopole video that isn't problematic.  Did any of you actually watch it, especially those who have had a NiFeB magnet?
if you're serious, please repost a link. I always like to comment. Smiley
It was in the OP.
yeah, that one. It's called a homopolar motor and it's powered by a battery inside the piece of wood.

EDIT: wait i'm not sure it's a homopolar motor. But a motor anyhow.
EDIT2: nevermind the edit, it's a homopolar motor

I'm trying to decide if it is fraud, or farce.
The standard view is that no monopole magnets exist, though very serious and capable investigators are searching for them.
The presentation in the film fails to present monopoles in any light that is credible.

lol... show of hands, how many people actually thought I was a free energy nut?

I did! Kind of wondered how you could be preaching that crap. lol

I want to read the background on the BTC loss.  What are some links to those threads & announcements?

In particular, I wonder how many BTC were lost, and I wonder what discussions did occur about selling the debt between individuals.
884  Economy / Exchanges / Re: bitfloor issues? on: July 18, 2013, 04:48:03 PM

I do not want to continually argue whether "something of value" was stolen and the police would take a report.    But using the logic above, you would not file a police report when your car is stolen either being cars are not legal tender.

I see you conveniently omitted from your quote of me the part where I differentiate between financial theft and property theft. My logic is sound, and just so you don't have to go back and re-read my last comment I will paraphrase for you.

What I said was that there was no FINANCIAL theft committed (no money stolen) because bitcoin are not money, not legal tender, not a FINANCIAL instrument at all in the eyes of US FINANCIAL law.

And then I said that even if it was reported as a PROPERTY theft (yes, like when your car is stolen) that it would be very difficult to assign a value anywhere close to what you and I as bitcoin users would assign to it.

Vehicles have well established values and means for deducing their value.. so a better comparison to bitcoin would be maybe.. a collectors item.. like a baseball card or a restaurant napkin signed by a famous actor.. something that doesn't really have value but is assigned value by certain people

...

I follow this train of thought.

886  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: July 17, 2013, 08:56:38 PM
is there any module being obstructed by the power / data cables going from it to fpga? I noticed my top 2 modules had this issue right behind the fans that blew on them, those cables were blocking like 20% of the airflow... moving them to the side of the modules freed up this blocked air ... causing drop in temps for the lower module & probably the middle one.

Opened it up, checked it and looked good.  Is it possible they might have forgotten some thermal compound somewhere and sensors aren't reading correct.

In the cgminer stats log, does any value for the match_work_count stand out?

When the ac is on it keeping the temps under 41 the match_work values are pretty similar.  Once I pull the ac off and the temp climbs above 41 their is a big difference in values from one to another.

I assume that each of the 24 numbers corresponds to a card of 10 chips, and that swapping the worst one out will be beneficial.

888  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Question about mining and FinCen on: July 17, 2013, 12:58:42 PM
The guidance didn't single out miners at all. Anyone who provides a service of converting bitcoins to fiat and vice versa is considered a money transmitter. A miner or individual who converts their mined currency to fiat using an exchange or spends it for their own purposes is not a money transmitter.

Yes, it did single out miners - or at least that is the thinking among the compliance professionals (lawyers and non-lawyer compliance experts) that I work with. The relevant language is:

"[a] person that creates units of convertible virtual currency and sells those units to another person for real currency or its equivalent is engaged in transmission to another location and is a money transmitter."

The consensus is that "persons who create units of convertible virtual currency" are miners.  Moreover, the guidance did not explicitly limit the "money transmitter" label to those miners acting as a business.  Note that it uses the term "person" not "business" when it describes what miners must register.  Personally, I believe you are right, and if you read my thread, you'll get a more in-depth explanation of why.  Nonetheless, I believe we are in the minority there.

Looking at the second instance of the term "person" I wonder if a miner who sells his bitcoins on an exchange, a business instead of a person, is defined as a money transmitter.
Similarly, I wonder if someone who pays a kid to do yardwork using bitcoins that he himself mined is a money transmitter.

Details?
Perhaps a URL for instructions?

I think everyone who should receive a payout now has one, and the totals (to you) should be correct.

I used bitcoind to send the payouts.  It creates a new address in the same account to receive the change.  It pays out of an account, not out of an address, with the sendmany command.  I think that is good, so far the total received by 18bLcVkviErQi75zB8X39jZXxHNpSZggdC is the total generated by the Avalon.

The transactions involved are

How can I tell my daughter why it is a good idea to buy into this when a mechanism is visible to remove value, and none is visible to increase it?

It's like any ETF: the fees are only worth paying if you place a value higher than the fees on whatever benefits the ETF might be offering. In this particular case, some people might like the liquidity, some people might like being able to hold it in a brokerage account, some people might like to hold it in a retirement account where the funds are otherwise unavailable to them, etc. For many people who are already fully capable of buying Bitcoins directly, I don't think there's much advantage at all.

My half formed idea is that the rise in the value of bitcoin will outpace the drain from the administrative fees, and that opinion leads me to consider it for a higher risk part of my retirement account.  I am assuming that this increase in bitcoin value will translate to more wealth after retirement.

ASICs got us there and they can get us out too.
Once they are widely accessible, someone will point them to Bytecoin for sure. I will, when I get mine...

I have the ASIC, but no where to point it.
893  Economy / Exchanges / Re: bitfloor issues? on: July 17, 2013, 10:42:27 AM

I think AudenX got results.  I think his communication focused on forward looking attempts to get our funds returned.  I think that focus helped generate an outcome that is beneficial to me, and to you.  I don't think those attempts would have worked if he had inserted personal attacks into the conversation.

Your previous comment had nothing to do with the communication that AudenX had with anyone. You directly insinuated that the people here on this forum, in voicing their concerns and opinions in the absence of any communication by Roman, somehow affected, or potentially affected, the progression of a solution to this issue. And you were wrong to suggest so.

Obviously, anyone with direct communication with Roman is going to be as congenial as possible. I would be too.

You could be congenial here as well, without giving any ground.

My previous comment was responsive to Minor Miner's question.  My view is that Minor is wrong underneath both aspects of his question:

1.  Roman did communicate, he has updated his web page with clear instructions.
2.  Roman has taken the one action that I care about:  he has relinquished control of the money to a credit union that is working to return it to us.

Despite that disagreement, my comment gives my opinion of why Roman isn't more visible: it directly responds to a question.  I cannot view your response, with the hostility and personal attacks and lack of congeniality, as a good arguement why I am wrong.

...and as always, though I clearly have a different view from Entropy, I find his comments articulate, on target, and they make me think.

894  Economy / Economics / Re: Winkelvoss ETP could become THE pricing mechanism for BTC on: July 17, 2013, 10:02:43 AM
Does a mechanism exist to increase the number of bitcoins per share?

I don't imagine that something like a reverse split would be unheard of, but on the other hand it wouldn't really have any impact on a commodity ETF except to increase the price per share.

Full details on the mechanics are available from the S-1 filing.

I have read and do review the filing.  I wish I had thought of it, but I am also like a student who has read the text and knows the words but doesn't grok it.

How can I tell my daughter why it is a good idea to buy into this when a mechanism is visible to remove value, and none is visible to increase it?

895  Economy / Exchanges / Re: bitfloor issues? on: July 17, 2013, 09:54:51 AM

to insinuate that any amount of blame for how Roman has handled this falls on any of the victims of his fiasco is both ignorant and unconscionable

We, bitfloor's customers got robbed.  Technically Roman says he got robbed, but never posted any proof of that.  Then he just handed people IOUs and refused to discuss any of numerous options to mitigate the damage.

Why anyone would trust Roman with anything worth more than a stick of gum after that will always be a mystery to me.

What is an example of proof that might exist?
897  Economy / Economics / Re: Winkelvoss ETP could become THE pricing mechanism for BTC on: July 17, 2013, 09:29:57 AM
Of course the Bitcoins held per share will decline over time due to expenses; every investor knows this, in advance, and the Net Asset Value of such ETFs is always public knowledge. But that does not mean the shares somehow become less backed by Bitcoins: they are always and forever backed by the Bitcoins being held by the trust.

Does a mechanism exist to increase the number of bitcoins per share?
898  Other / Off-topic / Re: Perpetual motion device - Free Energy - Do you believe in it? on: July 17, 2013, 02:52:39 AM
How much would you bet that it works or doesnt?

This topic is aimed at mainly:
myrkul
Rassah

I would bet $6,000,000,000 USD and the life of the betters that free energy is not possible. The energy always has to come from somewhere.

And sorry, it can't come from a magnet. I don't know where some of the guys here got the idea that you can get energy out of a magnet by slowly demagnetizing it, but that's simply not true. A magnet is just molecules lined up in a specific way. You can't get energy out of that any more than you get energy out of a crystal or from just lining up magnets on the floor top all face the same direction.

Magnets store energy.  When they demagnetize, the energy is released.  So it is like a battery, but it is neither free nor is it perpetual.

Some friends had a 10 or 12T superconducting magnet and it quenched.  All the stored energy was released, quickly.  For a long time, if there was a loud sound they would drop to the floor.

whats the best way to determine if your unit needs the jumper de-soldered ?

If you mean the fuse, it is by the shipping date.

900  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Need company to host my avalons on: July 17, 2013, 02:38:41 AM
My electric rates are near 8¢ / kwh

I have my own Avalon, and in the winter it reaches -20°F.  If you paid the electricity usage, I would host your machine for the waste heat, and the ability to park my own 4th module in it.
