I was surprise, I always thought this was because of overeating and no exercise.
Nope. It's lightbulbs' fault. Also indirectly causes cancer.

My aunt is 400lbs because she took birth control 20 years ago. True story. Tongue
962  Economy / Economics / Re: Federal Investigation Launched into eBay's trading action attacking Carl ICahn on: May 31, 2014, 12:20:49 AM
A company doesn't lose market share because stock price decreases and investors are fined/imprisoned. Sounds like eBay would be better off with these guys forced/pressured into selling their shares.

"Hey, can I pay in PPUSD?"

"No, man. A few of their investors had to pay fines to the government recently, so I obviously don't want to use it because I used to really believe in the law-abiding ideals of their shareholders."

Or - wait. Did you just bait me into proving your real point?
963  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Guess the Core "Warning" on: May 29, 2014, 11:04:41 PM
Thanks for the prods. I think I've found the issue after seeing a couple other programs fail similarly. Doesn't appear to be an issue with Core at all.

I wasn't expecting to reinstall W7 (mobo fried). All I had was a USB stick with some form of W7 on it. Turns out it was 32-bit, so I have 2.72GB out of 16GB RAM usable. Now I need to find a 64-bit version of W7 and have a windows.old.old Roll Eyes Cheesy

Will lock thread now unless it turns out to be something else. Thanks again!
964  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Guess the Core "Warning" on: May 29, 2014, 10:40:11 PM
Did it sync up to 20 hours, or it was 20 hours behind when you opened it after the system reinstall? Just curious... because if the former, I don't see why it would stop at -20 when the discrepancy is far less(seems pretty arbitrary).
22h behind when opening, updated to 20h behind before hanging. Used old blockchain files from before reinstalling Windows.
965  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Guess the Core "Warning" on: May 29, 2014, 10:27:58 PM
Spoiler!

Was a result of switching over PCs to a newly installed OS. Time was set for 6:29pm when it was 6:19pm. Oddly enough, that was while it was set to Pacific time while I'm in Eastern. Going by debug file, Core correctly guessed my time zone and noted a 179 minute discrepency (which isn't quite right, either), which I find really odd, though less than the useless hard hang. Tongue

In case I attracted a dev... why does Core go from a loading splash screen to being invisible (less tray icon) and unclickable for ~5 minutes on loading?

ETA: Actually... I take it back. It may be out of space.... I'll see if it does it again. I still have windows.old on it -- wasn't a fresh install, and haven't sorted through what I need and don't on the SSD, though datadir is set to a separate hard drive... don't think it ran out of space, but I'll wait to confirm.

I didn't do a detailed study yet, but speaking of low hangin fruits, what about address dictionary, typical script patterns and database index compression?
Set compression for the hard drive and place bitcoin files on it.
And think what is cheaper: disk space or processor work?
Disk space is fairly insignificant. Transmission is the real money/time suck. I bugged Jeff about compressing the bootstrap torrent he maintains. He's open to it... needs more prodding, I think. Smiley Even without anything built specifically for Bitcoin, >40% can be cut from the blockchain without requiring anywhere near as much time to decompress (compared to downloading time saved) unless you have a higher-end cable connection or fiber.

Has been hanging on this screen for ~15 minutes. Will provide hints as requested.

969  Other / Off-topic / Dealing with Coinbase spam (Gmail) on: May 29, 2014, 09:59:45 PM
In case anyone's unfamiliar with Gmail's slick filter GUI... (great time to learn!)

Step set 1:
*Open up a new email ("Compose")

Subject:
Welcome to my inbox!

Body:
Hello! Thank you for facilitating spam. Unfortunately, Gmail has not currently noted your domain as a spam provider and hasn't yet "learned" to move your emails to the spam box for my particular account. Until that time, this message will be automatically sent out each time a "Welcome to Coinbase!" email arrives. Kind regards!

*Click the triangle at the bottom-right, to the right of the trashcan icon.

*Hover over "Canned Responses"

*Click "New canned response..."

*Name it Coinbase (or whatever you want)

----

Step set 2:
*Go here: https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?pli=1#settings/filters

*Create a new filter

From:
contact@coinbase.com

Subject:
Your account has been created

*Click next ("create filter with this search")

*Click "Delete it"

*Click "Send Canned Response" and select Coinbase (or whatever you named the canned response for them)

*Save
970  Economy / Speculation / Re: DISH Becomes World’s Largest Company to Accept Bitcoin. on: May 29, 2014, 09:43:31 PM
Oh, fwiw - kinda relevant to new discussion - I haven't heard any reports of payment processors dumping coins on the open market. I know BitPay doesn't. Whether or not the buyer would've purchased on the open market if the payment processors couldn't fill the order and prevent slippage is arguable.
971  Economy / Speculation / Re: DISH Becomes World’s Largest Company to Accept Bitcoin. on: May 29, 2014, 09:40:02 PM
Hrrrrm. If they offer a discount, I might consider keeping it around for a while longer. Have been meaning to cancel my account for nearly a month. Dedicated television lines will be dead by daughter's adulthood, I think, like physical phone lines are dying out in my generation. DISH stations, even HD, are very noticeably lower res and lower fps than OTA TV and 480p downloads... seems silly to pay for it, really.

It'd be really nice to always have up-to-date statements when someone bills me. That alone is worth a fair bit to me...

... Gosh, I should've chatted up the propane manager I talked to a couple days ago about it. I can't stand how they bill... no autopay option, and you have to pay if you use the phone to enter CC#. Every time, I have to Google how to write a check, which I literally only have a book of for the propane. Cheesy Only non-automatic payment of all bills (less property taxes, where I have a very similar problem), and we check the mail maybe twice per month, so almost always get a $34 late fee tacked on.
972  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [OPEN!] LTB Transcription Project on: May 29, 2014, 09:19:34 PM
I've gone partially deaf again (totally normal for me - allergies), so I'll un-reserve e92 for now. Fwiw. (still able to proofread, no problem)
973  Other / Politics & Society / Re: A summary of US politics on: May 29, 2014, 01:48:42 AM
i work in fundraising/campaign law and end up getting lots and lots of very similar spam emails. they are often sent out by less-than-ethical campaign consultants/strategists, and it's hard to say that that this one was actually authorized by the GOP... seems unlikely.
They are indeed selling the stupid socks on their website, fwiw. http://www.gop.com/act/george-hw-bush-socks They look like what I'd imagine Gay Pride socks would. I'd guess it was "proxy-authorized" by someone allowed to "handle spam." I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse.

HW obviously didn't write that. -Or he's in mid-stage Alzheimer's with a case of the I-just-don't-give-a-fuck-anymores. Even candidates I'm quite fond of have obnoxious and obviously fake emails.... very disappointing. It would be kind of interesting if the alleged fundraiser came out and distanced himself from this kind of ghost-written spam. Has that ever happened before? They're kind of pigeonholed... HW wouldn't want to cause a controversy. Maybe they pay him some kind of %split from donations off the email's reflinks? Would be interested to hear how that generally works.

975  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: eBay will go bankrupt in 10-15 yrs, and Bitcoin will be largely to blame on: May 29, 2014, 01:35:36 AM
Fees are absurd, and this is not entirely (or even mostly, I think) a symptom of fiat's inferiority. Their fees were much lower even after a few years of operation, but they scaled to mainstream very poorly and are now bloated beyond reason. What they spend their money on, I have no idea... low-key buyouts of potential competitors, maybe. I was quite fond of BitMit, but haven't found any of the newcomers particularly appealing. I'm pleased to keep the sale of depreciating goods on this forum and bump the thread every week or two than feed that grotesque beast. Speaking of which...
976  Economy / Speculation / Re: Mt. Gox selling trademark "Bitcoin" on: May 29, 2014, 01:18:27 AM
Worth $0 and a PR liability to own, really. Invalid trademark shouldn't have been approved, but nobody knew what the Hell a bitcoin was back then. You can't trademark gold and you can't trademark bitcoin. It's ridiculous, and no judge where the defense was present (and maybe even if not) would favor the persecutor.
977  Other / Meta / Re: I did not know. on: May 29, 2014, 12:55:19 AM
MAYBE IF YOU CALL THE TELLER A FAT F()#<ING B!+CH THE BANK WILL GIVE YOU A LOAN?!!!!!1!!!!11
This may be true. Even in a small town, bank refused to refund me ~$150 in delinquency fees one time (never used the account). They never sent me notice. I tried calm explanation and the guy displayed not even a hint of guilt when closing my account and taking my money. I still give them the stink eye every time I drive by.

Even Chase, where I had a similar issue ~6 months ago (never-used account, had annual membership dues charged, where they then kept charging interest and late fees [which they also charged interest on] for half a year) closed my account, wiped the debt, and withdrew their credit report "bad boy note" when I wrote a letter. In letters, it's easy to sound angry. In person, it is much more difficult (for me, at least), when sounding threatening is sometimes preferable. With banks, I think the best tone is always threatening. At least, as proven, it is interesting. Grin
978  Other / Meta / Re: lol this section? on: May 26, 2014, 06:32:12 PM
Keeps it out of other sections. The activity could be outright banned for public discussion, though, similar to giveaways, but they don't result in anywhere near the same level of spam, so at this point I think it's largely kept around just so they don't have to go through the drama of banning it. There are rarely legit transactions around here, too. If it's doing a smidge of good, maybe it's worth keeping.
979  Economy / Speculation / Re: When will the btc cross 600?? on: May 26, 2014, 06:10:34 PM
banks open monday, money should be flowing and i bet we will cross 600 soon

Banks don't open in the US Monday. National holiday (Memorial Day)

Yet another reason to use bitcoin.

Bank holidays.... Seriously, it's my money, let me spend if when I want it. Oh wait, you mean to tell me it's not my money? That's right, the money at your bank is your bank's money, not yours.

What do you mean banks dont open? People cannot access their money in this time?
You can use debit and credit cards, and whatever an ATM can do, but most branches are closed and isn't considered a business day for stuff like wires and ACH. With Saturday and Sunday, too, there's a fair chance a significant chunk of new US money coming out of banks for buying the trend will clump up mid-late this week.
980  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Pope Francis: “We are not alone in the Universe.” on: May 26, 2014, 04:53:55 PM
Then we have the question again if every planet has "their" Jesus, the one and only Son of God.

This is a serious discussion and I think it was Teilhard de Chardin who would say yes. He tried to combine theology and rational science and thus worked out that a "Son of God" manifestation would be a necessary evolutionary step in the development of every intelligent species.

If there is intelligent life they would view us as nothing but primitive monkeys, let alone take our advice/opinions  Cheesy
If i told you that there was a species of monkey that would one day be more inteligient and aggresive, and will try to take over the human race. what do you think you would do to that now primitive monkey? same with aliens perhaps extinguish now before we come unhandleable in the distent future.
Any society able to monitor us should know we're technological laggards in comparison. They've likely gone beyond resource scarcity, so crushing us, I imagine, for most scenarios, is probably trivial (outside, perhaps, any philosophical debates). By the time we find them, we'll probably have moved beyond resource scarcity, too, so outside some type of jellies over their cultural achievements, there's really no reason to be bothering them except to exchange perspectives and advance the art of resource collection and manipulation. I imagine they've found a primary "industry planet" so unimaginably large and dense that they literally hurl planets and moons into the surface of one side to break it apart and keep it on the surface for the automated mining drones.

Or maybe they're struggling with meaningless existence issues still, and have formed some type of goofy gladiator society. I hope they've adopted ridiculous stereotypes to form their Superman Myth around, or maybe they try to mimic our most ridiculous stereotypes and just play with us while they genocide us. You know - like the Black American musclehead stereotype who walks around, MOTHERFUCKING THIS, and MOTHERFUCKING THAT! I'd love that... or they wage wars with ridiculous mechanical monsters like "Flame Belly" or "Laser Dick," where the absurd method of destruction is itself is a form of art for the society. Maybe they'll create drones which are both fun and a fair match, broadcasting the war and permitting us to exist should we manage to come out alive.

Alternately, maybe they're emotional and disappointed to see we are relatively primitive, so they kill us out of spite. ... Err - at any rate, I'd be stunned if they killed us because they thought we could overpower them some time in the future. Would that be something for humanity to be proud of?
