You can use any old laptop and still make some gridcoin, you can't really do that with the other cryptos.

I think what will start to happen is that all the shit cryptos will start dropping out of the exchanges as everyone realizes what a waste of time all of them really are. Once people start to look for true value then coins like Gridcoin will shine. I think it is a matter of time. Welcome to the club Nwfella. Make sure to watch and like and spread around the new GRC explainer video. Love the concept behind this coin alot. Useful application of all this computation power...what a concept. Submitted my vote on Cryptsy to get GRC added. Still quite a ways behind ALN, MED, and XRP but what the hell. really good video. sadly i think that right now people look only for profit in the cryptovalue's world Well, it is a currency, and nobody would want to lose the purchasing power or hashpower they invested in a coin. However, I do believe Gridcoin could be profitable in the long-term. It has the potential to replace XPM as the best coin which contributes to science.

The New GRC Explainer Video!

1. Do you mean one wallet on several computers? 2. You can CPU mine Gridcoin and have the GPU do Boinc work for projects like Milkyway@home. That's what I do now. 3. I haven't used asics, but I think it can work if the asic can mine against a loopback address, once the new p2pool is up I think it will be easier to use asic. A very interesting initiative, but before I can join I need a few clarifications (I've mined Bicoin and altcoins for a long time, so I know all about it. I've also had top hosts in S@H for years, so I know all about BOINC projetcts too):
1: When will you support one wallet address? Current implementation is way too manual as it requires one wallet per host, and administering so many wallet addresses is an no go. 2: I don't understand how the hardware utilization is shared. I use my GPUs to crunch M@H or S@H tasks with each project's optimized binaries, so there is no gpu cycles left to also mine. 3: How to set up ASICs?

To be honest after the Mintpal decided to keeps everyone's money who voted and closing the votes I am not sure I want GRC on that exchange. I would much rater get GRC on cryptsy. They have US fiat deposits now. We need people voting at mintpal. Please vote at https://www.mintpal.com/votingThat should help make more people aware of gridcoin and further price appreciation.

The multipool should have been up a long time ago, but there is so much to do on Gridcoin that we didn't really focus on the idea till recently. There will be a scrypt an x11 multipool for Gridcoin very soon, so price will start to rise. reputables. Prompt, which explains why such a price drop? agree introduced CPU blocks that uvelichelis number of payments, but it is a price drop in 2 times instead of 4-3,5!!!
yeah! need to know this too! hope you will be right! i remenber when the price was 0.001btc/grc. and the saddest thing, is the 24volume when cpu-mining came on-board, the max coin amount simply doubled. supporters tried to hold the value up, but it has to sustain itself to go forward. awaiting the new buy-side multi-pool

I am talking about GPU, I understand that hashing and the kind of computations required for Boinc/WCG are different. GPU can do both types! If you read the above, you will see one example of what distributed scientific computing has achieved. Now imagine thousands or even millions of miners doing computations in every single science field because they get coins for doing so. Imagine the discoveries that will be made! You can have calculations that are useful for other things, or you can have calculations that are useful as proof of work, but they can't be the same calculations.

https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/hfcc/overview.doIf you read the above, you will see one example of what distributed scientific computing has achieved. Now imagine thousands or even millions of miners doing computations in every single science field because they get coins for doing so. Imagine the discoveries that will be made! What would be the incentive to donate this processing power to these causes? I would assume that the companies that are working on these problems are doing to with the hope of one day somehow being able to find the solution and profit off of it.
Like all donations, the incentive would be the fact you believe yourself to be doing something good for someone else/society. It's like asking what incentive people have to donate to charity - it's called charity for a reason. Next, you would realise that sad as it is, all innovation comes about from a desire for further revenue - if IBM and various other PC manufacturers didn't want money (yeah like that's going to happen) then they'd have no incentive to produce anything and you would probably not have a computer nor would you have Bitcoin.

You don't need asics at all technically speaking. All of the gpu and cpu that are deployed on mining altcoins can be used to donate to science projects such as Boinc and folding proteins etc.. The whole article is about he blockchain tech. If GPU can do it, I am sure asic can be made to do these kinds of computations. I think as the Bitcoin popularity rises more and more people are gonna start to ask if all the power mining is sucking from the electricity grid can be applied somewhere really useful. I think it is only a matter of time. 1) bitcoins proof of work does not do protein folding. that would be probably a job of a protein folding altcoin, thats protocol is different then bitcoin.
2) bitcoins proof of work does not do prime numbers.. thats the job of an altcoin called primecoin
In theory ASICs could do this kind of work. I would doubt that bitcoin ASICs could do either of these as they are programmed to do a calculation to find a hash under a certain number, but the same manufacturers could make different ASICs to solve these kinds of problems. ASICs used to mine bitcoin are only able to make SHA256 calculations. I am not sure if either of these applications would need these kinds of calculations done.

I guess the title could use a rewording. I guess what they are trying to get across is the usefulness of the block chain technology. 1) bitcoins proof of work does not do protein folding. that would be probably a job of a protein folding altcoin, thats protocol is different then bitcoin.
2) bitcoins proof of work does not do prime numbers.. thats the job of an altcoin called primecoin
3) SETI would require again a totally different protocol.
4) blah blah .. altcoin.. blah blah solarcoin
5) blah blah different protocol blah blah
BITCOIN protocol does none of the 5 listed things. and it never will. other altcoins do and probably will, but the title of this topic should be renamed to crypto-currency's proof of work

Please read the article and do a little research. This is not about changing the Bitcoin blockchain but using the tech itself. There are several crypto's that have actually succeed in doing this. This has nothing to do with sha256 hashes. Re: 5 Global Problems Bitcoin’s Proof of Work Can Help Solve! Lol if you think spitting out SHA256 hashes can solve even 1 of these problems..... Changing Bitcoin's PoW at this stage would likely shake confidence in it and price would crash.
