1281  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What exactly makes a 'good' Altcoin? on: March 18, 2014, 06:29:10 PM
I have a thread on a similar topic and here is a snippet on why I think some coins are good due to being innovative.

Notable Alt-Coins:-

Faster coins: I'm not sure if they are an advantage or a disadvantage. This thread discusses it.
Some disadvantages are more orphans and hence more energy usage , more inflation etc.
The obvious advantage is the faster transactions.

Litecoin : A stable coin with faster transactions and the one that started the trend of Scrypt.

Primecoin : One of the original coins that started the process of not wasting resources just for the sake of maintenance of the coin and allows usage of energy for other processes.
Gridcoin seems to be based on the same idea as Primecoin , but is newer and does not seem stable and more like a pump-n-dump

Darkcoin and Anoncoin : These try to enhance privacy in different ways. Darkcoin with easier and more integrated coin mixing and Anoncoin attempting to prevent correlation of an address to a real identity to a further level.

Post your coin and I will add it if it seems innovative.
This thread aims to be a resource to showcase the better and more innovative coins over the pump-n-dumps.

Why dark? I don't see it's anonymity feature as an advantage, it will get to deal with regulators and for the rest it's just a quark clone and less secure too.

It is basically an alt-coin which has the idea of mixing coins built into the system.
I feel that that is a great idea Tongue
1282  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: The Fate of Satoshi, a Bitcoin graphic adventure [BUY thread] [CrowdF + Equity] on: March 18, 2014, 06:27:49 PM
I completely trust Gweedo and would like if you could clarify your statement.

Are we all supposed to contact Gweedo and opt-out ?

I would prefer to stay as a part of this plan and should I opt out and then re-buy via some other payment method or should I simply keep my payment with Gweedo ?

However long this takes , it is a good venture and I would love to support it.

Thanks

I withdrew my last amount of money , just after it shut down.

So sad , I lost 10 mbtc investing on this.

Yay , time to invest in another ponzi.
1284  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which altcoins have features that make them in any way superior to Bitcoin ? on: March 18, 2014, 06:17:06 PM
I would be more concerned about the impact of Scrypt ASICs later this year (and where the GPU miners will turn to). For this reason n-factor Scrypt coins have the required features to survive as they an immune to ASICs.

We have seen the impact of ASICs for SHA-256 and this is soon to happen to Scrypt (LTC and all it's clones. Which is OK for LTC, but not for the rest). When this occurs I would suggest holding some Vertcoins, Execoin or Darkcoin. I have more faith in Vertcoin though.

Ahh yes , this is an outcome I did not foresee.

I don't trade in altcoins , but for anyone who does , this is worth noting.

However , I foresee LTC actually rising due to the increasing pump of capital into Scrypt ASICs

I am going to add a new part to the OP.
"Notable coins"
1287  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What is the disadvantage of having faster blocks ? on: March 14, 2014, 05:33:01 PM

Imagine a coin with 100 coins already mined.

Now lets say you have got a blocksize of 1 and a target time of 1 hour.

And in the other case you have a blocksize of 1 and a target time of 1 minute.

What do you think? Which coin has a higher inflation rate?

LOL
Did you read my previous post ?

If coin # 1 has 10 minutes and 10 coins
Coin #2 with 1 minute can be changed to 1 coin to reduce inflation.
1288  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which altcoins have features that make them in any way superior to Bitcoin ? on: March 14, 2014, 01:45:00 PM

Darkcoin

Okay , it would have been better if you detailed , but for all those too lazy , this is the copy-paste from their website.

0.00000% Pre-mined
Super secure hashing algorithm: 11 rounds of scientific hashing functions (blake, bmw, groestl, jh, keccak, skein, luffa, cubehash, shavite, simd, echo)
Block reward is controlled by: 2222222/(((Difficulty+2600)/9)^2)
CPU only mining
Block generation: 2.5 minutes
Difficulty Retargets based on Kimoto's Gravity Well
Est. ~7M Coins in 2015, ~13M in 2020, ~23M in 2030 (84M theoretical max)
Almost Completely Anonymous Transactions using DarkSend: Beta testing on MainNet

No premine is expected in any currency.
Block reward seems pretty sensible , pretty much like Bitcoin.
CPU only mining doesn't make sense... Allowing GPUs and ASICs convinces more people to invest capital into the coin and allows faster growth.
2.5 minutes seems like a good enough block time.

My biggest questions are :-

1. What does a hashing algorithm that complex achieve ? SHA-256 seems secure enough.
2. How exactly are transactions more anonymous ?
1289  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What is the disadvantage of having faster blocks ? on: March 14, 2014, 01:38:21 PM

- higher Inflation
- higher probability of building forks

The second point is self explanatory , but could you please detail more on how it causes inflation ?

I could easily make a coin called Bitcoin v2.0 , with 5 coin block reward and 1 minute confirm.
It takes 1/10 confirm time and hence has 1/10 the value.
In 10 minutes , the same number of coins are generated on average and the only difference is the greater amount of transactions processed.
1290  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What is the disadvantage of having faster blocks ? on: March 14, 2014, 01:36:37 PM
I'd say it's less secure. But we could just add tje required number of confirms.

I'd like to read an expert's answer.

Yes.

This is considering a double spend attack.

For anyone who did not understand , 6 confirms in Bitcoin with 10 minute block time = Needs an opposing power to have good luck and a large amount of Hash Rate for an hour.
600 confirms with a 6 second block time is the same thing as the party needs to keep up the hash rate for an hour to double spend.
6 confirms with the 6 second block time would be insecure , but that could easily be kept in proportion.
1291  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which altcoins have features that make them in any way superior to Bitcoin ? on: March 14, 2014, 01:32:51 PM
I really like Credits.  It has a very generic, simple name (something we want for mass adoption.)  It has VERY fast transactions. It's currently underrated and not many people know about it.  With the right attention it could be HUGE.  I really don't look at it as another pump/dump scrypt coin.  I want it or something like it to replace Bitcoin some day.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=496685.0

Video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h--kw2ZdIGQ

The only feature which seems better is the faster transaction speed.
While you seem optimistic,
( but you probably are just another early adopter looking to make it popular for your pump and dump to succeed)
The problem for your new coin is that bitcoin will not be displaced so easily.
Making faster transactions sounds like something that might defeat Bitcoin if they are on equal ground.
But Bitcoin is through the roof and this coin is nothing.

I am looking for innovative coins , not coins that are :-
"Super Fast"
Named after a famous person and therefore are the best logical currency
Made to be funny or named after a trend and hence should be worth millions

But,
I am now confused.
What is the drawback of having a faster coin ?
Why does Bitcoin have a 10 minute block time ?
Please answer here, so that I can use that information to further my search for a coin that is better than Bitcoin and could have replaced it if it was made a few years ago.
1292  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / What is the disadvantage of having faster blocks ? on: March 14, 2014, 01:27:13 PM
While bitcoin adjusts to 10 minutes , litecoin adjusts to 2.5 , many other coins try to make their coin the fastest.

A faster coin shows evidence of giving quicker transactions.
What is the disadvantage of a faster coin ?
1293  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which altcoins have features that make them in any way superior to Bitcoin ? on: March 14, 2014, 01:25:25 PM
Haha, that's a $128k question.

Dogecoin, because different algo (Scrypt) = large GPU miners network, faster transactions, larger infrastructure and community than LTC (also Scrypt) and significantly undervalued compared to LTC by the way.

NXT, because decentralized exchange, not relying on the slow bitcoin network (like XCP and MSC, but have a little bit of these too) and other cool features coming soon.

Maybe protoshares/bitshares as a small part of portfolio. No other worth investing as of now.

I am not talking about the community or anything , just the coin.

Dogecoin in my opinion is among the worst.
It gives a bad name to cryptocurrency and moves it from something serious to a joke.

1294  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Which altcoins have features that make them in any way superior to Bitcoin ? on: March 14, 2014, 01:05:13 PM
As far as I can see it,
( with my limited knowledge of the cryptocurrency world)
Bitcoin is the most valuable and most used cryptocurrency because it existed much earlier than other cryptocurrencies and it is easier to understand that Bitcoin is not just another scheme to steal your money.

But if you were to side with certain altcoins that are better than Bitcoin in certain ways , which are better than Bitcoin ?

I AM NOT LOOKING FOR YOU TO ADVERTISE YOUR SUPER FAST COIN
I am looking for innovative coins that have good features , not just speed.
Majority of the posts are just another name for a super fast coin.

1295  Economy / Services / Re: Free Escrow on: March 11, 2014, 07:24:28 PM
I checked up on your negative trust.
It was some random person who pre-emptively added negative trust to you because he thought your post history looked like that of a scammer.

It is not about the single negative rep , but you need tonnes of positive rep before you can become a trusted escrow.

Overall I'd say , you don't get rep to become an escrower , you become an escrower if you have lots of rep.
1296  Economy / Securities / Re: [XXXProfit] Reports & Information - Report For Period Ending On 2-28-14 on: March 11, 2014, 07:20:20 PM
I got my dividend , but isn't it rather less compared to estimates ?
Any reason why ?

I'm a little tired of reading these kinds of questions. It's right there in the report, he paid a 200 dollar server bill (which I'm assuming he staggers over a couple of payments of this month). So his total site profit was $891, looks like his site makes 700-1300 per fortnight if you look at the history linked in the first post. So this fortnights payment is right in the middle of the expected earnings. Minus the server payment you get $691 traded at $634.7/btc you get 1.089 btc distributed to 40,000 shares = 0.0000272 btc per share.

How many shares do you own? Does it add up? If it is less than it was last time it is probably because btc has gone up since last time.

I invested after seeing this :-
We project a conservative estimate of $45,000 [≈ 2007 average production worker pay] in revenue in 2014 but see the potential for upwards of $100,000
That would mean approx 1730 $ per two week period considering the 45,000 $ estimate..
Sure , I have not checked in on my investment since I invested , but I was just wondering when it would pick up to his estimates.

His calculations seem around right for my amount of shares.

PS : I should have expected extremely high "conservative" estimates Tongue
1297  Other / Meta / Re: Proposal: Disallow Ads in Signatures on: March 11, 2014, 07:11:13 PM
Perhaps the allowed signature styling should change with activity score / membergroup. Like:
- Newbie: No styling (including links) allowed. Max 40 characters.
- Jr. Member: Links allowed. Max 100 characters.
- Member: Unlimited length.
- Full: Color allowed.
- Sr. Member: Size allowed
- Hero: Background color allowed

Then newbies will be less effective advertisers, which would hopefully significantly reduce the incentive for low-content posts. And when people become capable of effectively advertising through their signatures, they'll have invested a lot of time into their accounts, and they won't risk being banned by spamming.

Why not allow link usage to all tiers but block the first two or three tiers from using known paid advertisements sites.
You could blacklist those URLs and make them automatically redirect to bitcointalk.org
Link shorteners too would be blocked for those tiers and would redirect to bitcointalk.org

This will allow personal sites and would block usage of paid links.
This would take some time to blacklist the people though.
1298  Other / Meta / Re: The last posting from your IP was less than 20 seconds ago. Please try again lat on: March 11, 2014, 07:04:48 PM
Early today while switching from one account to post with another, I saw for the first time that posting from my IP I must wait 360 seconds. I was thinking about copying and pasting it somewhere, but chose not to, but now wish I did if I knew this thread existed.

~Bruno K~

I think your other account was a newbie or so.
Newbie accounts need a 360 second gap between posts.
1299  Other / Meta / Re: Theymos is taking illegal ads from a ponzi scheme - MakeBtc.org on: March 11, 2014, 07:02:00 PM
How is allowing ponzi's advertisements illegal ?
He clearly states that "Advertised sites are not endorsed by the Bitcoin Forum. They may be unsafe, untrustworthy, or illegal in your jurisdiction."

1300  Other / Meta / Re: Make a sub for Ponzi's in gambling on: March 11, 2014, 07:00:07 PM
Yes !

We need a subforum in gambling such that gambling becomes a better less spammy place -.-
