1081  Economy / Services / Re: Knuckles Escrow Service on: June 01, 2014, 11:38:45 AM
There should be a rule for making escrow threads.
Maybe a minimum positive rep of +1....

A transaction may go unsecured , between two newbs , but it usually is a small amount
But a newbie offering an escrow service is really funny.
1082  Economy / Services / Re: Genesis-mining.com || Signature Campaign on: June 01, 2014, 11:35:04 AM
You should use escrow for first month atleast but you will get few users without it also for sure.

I am still available for the escrow service Wink

Not really necessary. They are not a shady casino which can be taken down at any moment.

The biggest collateral they are offering right now is their reputation. If they scam their signature campaign members , they will lose all reputation in a month and won't be able to get users to trust them to maintain their contract.

Basically , if they scam people out of the signature campaign , they will bring the axe down on their own business.

TLDR; Their collateral is their rep , no escrow is needed.
1083  Other / Meta / Re: If each user had a total % of forum posts read indicator .... on: June 01, 2014, 11:19:32 AM
Here are the users who have visited the greatest number of distinct topics (in descending order). malevolent has visited about 50,000, while Phinnaeus Gage has visited about 15,000. (The forum keeps track of the last post you've read in every topic that you've visited, which allows me to figure this out.)

*list removed*

<3 theymos.

I drew three conclusions:-

If there is any topic , there is a one in six chance that malevolent has gone through the topic already.

Most posts on the top pages would have been read by multiple moderators already. If a post falls in the ethical grey area , it is not report worthy unless it is relatively new.

Phin is one of those people who can't keep their mouth shut in real life and just say whatever first comes to their mind.. He has almost 1.4 posts per topic visited. That implies that he posts on almost every topic that he has ever checked and multiple times on many.
1084  Economy / Economics / Re: When will people feel comfortable using BTC ? on: June 01, 2014, 11:07:29 AM

Simply buy back the bitcoins you spend by using the fiat you saved by spending bitcoin instead.

So instead of doing groceries for $50, do them for 0,08 bitcoin (or something) and than use the $50 to buy back 0,08 bitcoin.

This will make dollars less useful (less people buy with dollars) and bitcoin more wanted.

Actually , I think that forgoes the point.

Let's say I buy a bitcoin from any exchange , which is a pretty popular location.

I then go to my favorite shop and spend it to get 600$ worth of stuff. They use bitpay and it gets converted for them in fiat.

Bitpay levels their stock , maintaining the amount they want to keep , by selling it back to exchanges.

Overall : I bought products that were made from intermediate products that costed fiat. It was instantly converted and the storeholder got the money finally in fiat. I also converted the Bitcoins spent into fiat spent. This process shuns Bitcoin as a currency on a whole and just uses Bitcoin as a round about way to use fiat.

1085  Economy / Economics / Re: When will people feel comfortable using BTC ? on: June 01, 2014, 02:13:42 AM
People will use bitcoin when the following conditions are met:

1) Apps make it VERY easy to buy/sell and trade
2) Big stores and grocery stores accept it, IE Target, Walmart, Food 4 Less, Stater Bros etc
3) Stores offer discounts for using bitcoins (pass on some of the savings from credit card percentage charges to us)
4) People can take part of the their income in bitcoin (see https://bitpay.com/bitcoin-payroll-api)

Well , gyft.com fulfills 2&3 to an extent.

It provides gift cards for a multitude of locations , Target , Sears , Gamestop , Amazon.
You get a 3% cashback on any gift card you purchase.

Whose would be the highest ?

Phinnaeus Gage seems like a good guess because he has the largest post count (IIRC) , Vod seems to be everywhere , but more than that , what about the Moderators and Global Mods and Admins. It is their job to look at as many posts.

So , come speculate with me. Please refrain from a single username , try to tell me why you think so.

EDIT: If it is not clear , I mean an indicator showing the total percentage of posts read out of the total posts on the forums.

I don't understand why would you want this, post count Is already an indicator of this I think, and you can't really tell If a person read the thread or he just clicked It and backed In 2 seconds. Seems a strange and useless idea for me  Undecided

This is not a suggestion.
I just wanted to speculate who would have read the most posts on the forum.

1088  Other / Meta / Re: Should bitcointalk account trading be banned? on: May 31, 2014, 06:16:47 PM
Although selling accounts isn't plausible, but nor the mods, nor the admin can stop it. You ban the IP, they use a VPN, you ban the account, they'll get a new one. It's better when it's done openly, when people know the risk they might be dealing with a sold account, rather than secretly, when the user imagines the account belongs to the original member.

That makes sense.

If you had some hypothetical method which made it possible for you to perfectly ban people who traded accounts , with no gaps , do you think it would be used ?

Not focusing on the means and problems arising , if we could stop this account trading , should we or should we allow it ?
1089  Economy / Economics / When will people feel comfortable using BTC ? on: May 31, 2014, 06:09:28 PM
When will people spend BTC as easily as fiat , not seeing it as an investment opportunity but a better currency for them to use ? Most of my friends that I have currently told about Bitcoin are most intrigued by its rapid rate of growth and not its outstanding features as a currency. They don't really care that it is free from government control , but are more focused on the fact that it has risen xy%

I don't really spend much of my Bitcoin , because I am always in fear.
I am not talking about cashing out , but for digital goods.

How do you spend 10 mBTC on a 5$ digital good when you believe that the same 10mBTC is worth atleast 15$ , probably more.
How much of your Bitcoin have you hoarded , and how much have you really spent ?
I am under the impression that people tend to hoard more with BTC than with fiat , considering it an investment more than a currency

I don't know how to make a poll here , so :- http://strawpoll.me/1793917
This is not referring to your blockchain.info statistic , which includes money you have moved around. I am looking at money you have truly spent vs total amount of BTC you have received.

Overall , I'm trying to look at how much my guess is true by the poll and your estimates of when majority of people will start looking at BTC as a currency.

EDIT : I'm not sure this is the right section , tell me if this should go in General Discussion or so.
1090  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NEW POLL: Should newbs and Jr. members be barred from creating ALT ANN threads ? on: May 31, 2014, 06:04:45 PM
We should really check and see how many Altcoins were first announced by Members and above.

I think majority of the coins , even the ones that are larger today were announced by Newbies and Jr.Members.
1091  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: HOW TO MAKE BITCOIN and USD Fiat EFFORTLESSLY on: May 31, 2014, 05:54:04 PM
To all of the users reading this thread , this is complete useless bullshit.
He basically told you to spend all your money buying stuff from his ref link.
You will lose all your money , or see only a little of it ever again and he will get a tonne of commission.

Thankfully a moderator removed all his reflinks.
If I was the moderator who moderated that post , I would have deleted it or banned the user.
Kudos to the mod for being patient enough to handle those hundreds of ref links.
1092  Other / Meta / Re: What exactly are the rules of the forum and where do I find them ? on: May 31, 2014, 05:50:13 PM
Most of the forum rules are in stickies in the subforums. A list of general rules stickied in Meta would be a good idea I think.

Not sure on the alt accounts of banned users or scammers. Sometimes it seems to be considered ban evasion but other times they seem to let it slide.

Banned users posting a thread in meta is okay, while technically ban evasion, it's not something we really ban for. There may be issues that need to be addressed and theymos may not have time to deal with it through appeals. Other than that it's ban evasion and will result in ban extension or permaban.

Most of the time that isn't the case and it's supremely annoying in those cases, especially since they tend to leave out important details, but whatever.

We really need to sticky this.

There are tonnes of rules that are really ambiguous. They are not well defined and even if they are , they are not instantly obvious to users.

Also , can we get the signature limitations to be put in the forum ranks thread ? Maybe on the first page.
1093  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why is cheese added to absolutely EVERYTHING in America? on: May 31, 2014, 05:43:03 PM
Cheese tastes awesome with everything.

It may be unhealthy , anything but natural , but who cares when you are in 'murica ?

Actually... somehow some american restaurant here start their new menu... Fries with cheese...  Grin

They have something they call "pizza fries" which is cheese (pure fat) , pepperoni (which is anything but pepperoni and actually pure fat) on fries (which have more oil than potato)

1096  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Does martingale really works? on: May 31, 2014, 05:34:46 PM
The martingale system doesn't work.

As time passes , you risk an ever increasing amount while having a chance to win only 1 unit.

So , if you've lost 27 bets in a row , your next bet will have a 50% (actually 49.5% chance) of winning , while costing you 1.342 BTC and may win you 1 satoshi on total.

Now , you will realise that you will win 1/134,200,000 of your input , but having a very very low chance of losing till then.

TLDR ; Martingale is a slow system. You basically increase the input continually to reduce your chance of losing everything. It doesn't really ever make you win , the house always wins.

1099  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What would happen to the transaction fee if bitcoin SKYROCKETED on: May 31, 2014, 03:13:26 PM
Quote
In today's economy , there are around 5 trillion dollars , if you consider all economies.

Even more

Okay , take it as 6.3 trillion , assuming there are all 21m BTC mined.
That will still be 300k , which is much lesser than necessary to cause a problem resulting in need to further divide Bitcoin.

It is unlikely that Bitcoin will ever cross a million $ , but I expect it to definitely hit the 10k range.
People who expect it to reach 1m in a few years are extreme fanatics.

Comparing Bitcoins future growth to the 300x boost it saw ages ago is stupid.
If Satoshi told 2 people about BTC when he first envisioned it and tripled the Bitcoin enthusiasts in a minute , we should not expect that to happen again in a minute.

TLDR; Bitcoin will rise , but even if it becomes as big as USD is now , it will be under 40k$ per Bitcoin (of todays USD value)
We will not need to further divide BTC in a long long time and if we do , we will have far more capable devs waiting to do so.
1100  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What would happen to the transaction fee if bitcoin SKYROCKETED on: May 31, 2014, 01:58:58 PM
Here is what I mean,

Imagine if 1 satoshi = $1 ..... WHat would happen to the fee, I mean 1 satoshi is smallest fraction of a bitcoin. It would be stupid to buy a $10 meal and the fee being $1-$2

In today's economy , there are around 5 trillion dollars , if you consider all economies.

Let's say 15 million BTC are mined , that will mean that even if the entire economy is only Bitcoin , each Bitcoin will be worth 5,000,000,000,000/15,000,000 = 333,333$ in today's money.

Bitcoin will never be worth a million $ of today's money. Sure , it may happen one day when USD has inflated so much that it is worth a cent of today's money. But in comparison to the money of now , Bitcoin can not cross a million.
