Nice try from the attackers. Very fast answer, thanks to everyone who worked on the fix.
No harm done I believe.

No harm done ? Look at the net hash rate, it has halved...

So what, it had just doubled. Although that could have been the attacks. Any dev input on this?

What was the timeframe of the attack?

This must be why withdrawals are locked on bittrex, are they locked on all exchanges?

LOL I always buy at the "Interesting" times! Cheesy

Yes, Poloniex' wallet is disabled as well.

@ Hueristic, I am cross posting it so it reaches as many people as possible. Some read this thread and not the ANN thread and vice-versa, hence.

Hacked, Attacked,
For sure, these are complete different things, sorry. Smiley
Also, if you want to know the details:

Nah, not really.

Please stay on topic. Use the appropiate threads to talk about other coins. Tnks.

One of your community members posted it, so I guess that applies to him as well.

Hacked is not the correct word here, the network was attacked.
2245  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: January 15, 2016, 01:53:23 PM
- Poloniex was and is on the correct chain, coins are safe, wallet is currently disabled but trading is allowed.

- MyMonero is not affected, thus coins stored there are safe.

- The devs are preparing a point release to 0.9 that resolves the issue caused by the malicious fork.
2246  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: January 15, 2016, 01:11:47 PM
Crosspost:

NB: https://forum.getmonero.org/1/news-announcements-and-editorials/2452/monero-network-malicious-fork-from-block-913193-updates-and-resolution

From that post (which will be kept updated) -

Hi all,

The Monero network was (once again) the subject of an attack. Due to an error during the development of 0.9, Hydrogen Helix, we omitted a check that allowed for v2 blocks to be added to the network prior to the hard fork block height. Thus instead of forking on March 20, at block height 1009827, a v2 block was added to the network at block height 913193.

This is obviously problematic as not all services have updated to 0.9, and the bulk of the network hash rate is still on 0.8.x. We are preparing a point release to 0.9 that resolves this, but in the meantime only if you are running 0.9 you can do the following as a quick patch:

Shut down your Monero daemon
Grab a checkpoints.json file from getmonero: https://downloads.getmonero.org/checkpoints.json
Put the file in your bitmonero working directory (eg. ~/.bitmonero or C:\ProgramData\bitmonero)
Restart the daemon
As soon as the patched point release is out you can remove the checkpoints.json file, if you wish, and run the updated version. The checkpoints.json patch is a quick fix and does not prevent the attacker from replaying their attack at a later block.

DASH doing great too, 0.0090.
Retarded developers ruined Monero.. Such a shame..

Ruined how exactly?
2248  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: January 13, 2016, 10:48:01 PM
So quick question

Running the new 0-9-0-0

looking at the limit

I'm getting 8194 kB/s down  2047 kB/s up
what is the command for increasing down limit?   Thanks for help.

Have you tried using --help in bitmonerod.exe (the deamon)? If I recall correctly, the command for adjusting up/down limits is in that list.
2249  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: January 13, 2016, 02:41:58 AM
Been out of the loop for a long time due to life getting in the way.

I just downloaded monero.win.x64.v0-9-0-0. Any instructions that I can refer to?

Thanks!

[1] Unzip / extract the file in a directory you prefer.

[2] Start bitmonerod.exe, this is the daemon. It'll begin to sync from scratch. The syncing time depends on a variety of factors, for instance your bandwith, computer specifications and type of harddrive. However, type of harddrive explains most of the difference in syncing time. On an SSD it usually takes about an hour to sync from scratch, whereas it will take a few hours with an HDD (might even be a bit longer).

[3] If bitmonerod.exe (the daemon) is synced (it will notify you with something like: "bitmonerod has synced, you can now use simplewallet"), you can open up simplewallet.exe and create a wallet (or import / restore an existing one).

If you have any additional questions, feel free to ask!
2250  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Boolberry vs Monero Chess Challenge and CryptoNote technical discussion on: January 13, 2016, 02:09:08 AM
This work is listed under research goals in the graphic below. Is it correct to assume that the development goals (such as smart mining) will generally be implemented before research goals? I know there have already been exceptions to this rule such as stealth payment IDs, serialized into destination "address" (listed under research) already complete.

I would not infer a specific order between development goals and research goals.

Is there also a roadmap for CryptoNote side projects? Things like xmr.to paybee and so on. Will xmr.to eventually work in both directions?

These are all independent projects, so you would have to ask their developers and operators. There is no unified roadmap.

To complement, saddambitcoin is working on an xmr.to like website that will work the other way around.

Even though it might be luck, it might be a good idea to dive into a bit.

Difficulty went from 53110219 to 1017604313 in just a couple of hours...

Switch your botnet over?

I don't run a botnet, I use company resources, Sugon cluster (300 nodes, around 300kh/s). I dont think this is a botnet, the diff went up too  fast, someone might be manipulating the diff. algo ...
How?

I dont know, i came here to ask. How the f. is it possible for diff to double in just a couple hours ?!

Might have something to do with these large swings that can be found here -> http://monero.net/xmr_network.html

I am not sure either though.

This analysis popped up in another forum.

http://blog.makemoneywhileyouwork.com/2016/01/11/using-alt-coins-to-mix-bitcoins/

Comparison of XMR vs DASH for mixing.

It's a fair assessment based on doing an on-the-fly-mix and send. Dash mixing does work, it's just hit and miss and can take a few hours depending on the amount and rounds you use. Having said that, a couple of times I've mixed 200 dash over in under 2 hours. This isn't the norm though in my experience...

The length of time isn't a problem in many respects as long as you're not in a hurry to send privatized funds.

Walter

Also, Dash requires more funds. I mean you have to break it down into denominations, and he was using so little Dash.

On the other hand, all this will change with Evolution.  Still, yes, if you want to mix like that, and don't care about what the coin offers in stability and auditability - and  you're fine with taking a chance buying then selling a coin, sure, monero is the way to go, IMO.  I wouldn't want to keep my funds in monero.  I don't trust it and think that at the first sign of questionable status of how many coins are "out there" people are going to jump off that boat. But then again, we all live in a fiat world, don't we?

Coinbase transactions are mixin 0, therefore transparent enough to verify whether someone tampered with the supply. If this is the case, it would also show up at blockexplorers.

ZeroCash for instance, obscures all transactions. Therefore, one cannot verify itself whether someone tampered with the supply, which is probably their biggest issue. For instance, someone could exploit a bug that generates additional coins and no one would notice.

What is paybee? Does it have something to do with monero?

It's a payment gateway I've been developing along with a few partners. We had to deal with a few false starts and issues along the way, but it's (finally) getting close-ish to release.

Old news. He was soliciting beta testers on reddit more than 3 months ago.

I think the "close-ish to release" is difference here :-) But guess it is a matter of perception as well.

Shen already posted an update a few days ago regarding the implemenation of Ring CT for Monero:

edit 1/9/2016: Looks like its fully funded! Thanks to everyone who funded - I've started the work (https://github.com/ShenNoether/MiniNero/commit/9ede58897808bee784dab296654b99899a58c109), and I will be posting updates here for the next two weeks as I work on this, rather than updating both here and the stickied reddit post.

what a joke.

I think it's a fair assessment given what the guy was trying to do (unless you think he's lying about the times). If the wallet interface reports a fractional mixing progress then users are justified in considering their holdings "unmixed" if that indicator is not at 100%.

it shows you your "darksend balance" available to be sent before the total balance is 100% complete.
plus, once it's mixed you don't have to wait 10 min like with monero. you can send it instantly with instantX. so like i said it's like comparing apples to oranges.

for on the fly mixing monero may be faster we'll see. but i think he was using a centralized monero web wallet right?

i'm gonna do 2 rounds since on the fly speed is what he is measuring. although if he had to sync both wallets from the start it looks like he said monero takes 24 hours and DASH takes 1-2 hours. he says 2-24 hours but i think that is with a centralized web wallet. once again apples to oranges.

Monero doesn't take 24 hours to sync from scratch. There have been several reports of syncing from scratch within the hour with an SSD on a decent pc with decend bandwith. HDD takes a bit longer, most reports were around 4-6 hours to sync from scratch.

The centralized web wallet only takes a few minutes to sync.
