if it cost me less to buy BTC than the electricity it cost. What do you think I'll do ?

it costs less to make a sandwich than it does to buy one.

people pay for convenience, and I'd say if you already have a mining rig completely set up, then continuing to pay for electricity would be far more convenient than trying to buy (especially if you've never bought before).

2667  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Potential flaw with bitcoins in absolutes? on: August 04, 2011, 02:15:09 AM
someone with a monopoly 'losing their wallet' is effectively exactly the same as someone with a monopoly simply 'hoarding'. no practical difference really.

actually losing the wallet would be far better for everyone else as it would take away the threat of a large market dump.
2668  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Anybody knows: Bitcoin-cologne ?? legit? on: August 04, 2011, 12:28:34 AM

Instead you can create yourself your privkey (at least the hex one, 64 characters long, I don't know if all base59 ones are valid they are not because of the checksum) using your own pattern that you know by heart, thus no need to write it
E.g. 1234567890abcdef1234567890abcdef1234567890abcdef1234567890abcdef for 19ffB4HttNCHfY1t3YuErEytCspyHyVMwv

just for fun i sent you 0.02 btc to that imaginary address Cheesy ...you'll have to now import it quick before someone else does Wink

imaginary? it's quite real.

importing is not sufficient, I'd also have to send the coins on.

i just meant that the private key was created using his imagination, and yes you're right it's a race to spend, not a race to import. jackjack has now spent the 20 millies anyway.
2671  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Banks are fundamentally unnecessary and actually dangerous for bitcoin on: August 02, 2011, 02:15:23 PM
Every loan creates money. If you have a problem with money creation, you have a problem with lending.

If I borrow money to buy a house, the money I borrowed is still in circulation because I gave it to the person who sold me the house. However, now there is an IOU in circulation as well -- the future money I will earn to pay that mortgage is now already in circulation.

I agree that IOU's are created but not necessarily money created.

Person A: owns $100
Person B: owns $100
Person C: owns $0 and a nice hat

Person C decides to borrow $100 from Person A and promises to repay $110. This doesn't necessarily have to create any money, if this person can just sell his hat to person B, and we end up with:

Person A: owns $110
Person B: owns $90 and a nice hat
Person C: owns nil

A loan was made and repaid (with interest), and no money was created.

Also, that 'nice hat' doesn't even need to be tangible... it could just be Person C's personal labour or time for example.

And again a downside of interest: the poor pay the rich!!

i don't see how you can call that a downside unless you are at the same time claiming to be poor.

Poor man: That's a downside!
Rich man: That's an upside!

seems quite neutral to me.

I don't exactly know what you mean?!
What I am saying: the rich get richer, the poor get poorer. The poor pay the interest the rich receive...

and how is that a downside? that's all i'm asking.

seems to me if you're rich that's an upside.

sounds good but will be even better once the mainline client can import the privkey Smiley

would be funny if your privkey only existed as a hand-written note.

actually, given 10 or 15 minutes you could probably just memorize it.

In any case, it should be possible with a little scripting to trace every last satoshi to where it is now using blockexplorer.

i don't think that would work since they can get mashed together with 'good' coins.

i.e. put two satoshis (one 'stolen' and one 'good') in a blender and mix on high until you have 0.00000002 btc, then separate them again by spending 1 satoshi to 2 different people... which satoshi is the 'stolen' one?
2677  Economy / Marketplace / Re: PAYB.TC - The Free Bitcoin Address Shortener on: August 02, 2011, 07:28:09 AM
I have confirmed with Jered (owner of tradehill) that the short link http://payb.tc/tradehill was not made by them.

probably obvious, but i thought i'd check with them before just deleting it.

anyone using a shortening service (not just mine, but any), should be careful that they are getting the link directly from the person they intend to pay (just like you would with an ordinary bitcoin address).
2678  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Giving away paybtc.com domain name for free, for a payment gateway on: August 02, 2011, 07:19:40 AM
hi joepie.

if noone is willing or able to do the above (i probably don't have time), then perhaps i can buy the domain off you, to strengthen my brand.
2679  Economy / Services / Re: Bitcoin Escrow/MiddleMan Service? on: August 02, 2011, 04:25:00 AM
MITM? Great name for an escrow service!

No idea if you are being sarcastic...

completely sarcastic.

the thought of a man-in-the-middle attack is probably not something you'd use to make people feel safe with their bitcoins.
2680  Economy / Gambling / Re: Host YOUR OWN Flip Game On Bitcoinduit.com on: August 02, 2011, 03:14:36 AM
just curious, why do you call them flip games?

i thought a flip game would be something like doubletrouble.bitcoinbet.com
