Only a gigantic troll or a complete idiot would say that a company complying with anti-money-laundering regulations "raises a red flag." Sure it's inconvenient, but you're placing the blame at the wrong doorstep. This is one of the problems that Bitcoin solves very well, which makes every use of an exchange to obtain USD or some other fiat currency terribly ironic.
I've been a customer with MtGox for over a year. More than a week ago they put my account under 'pending review'. I submitted the requested documents. I have followed up with emails. I am in their problem ticketing system and I am still unable to withdraw even one btc. I don't know if that "raises a red flag" but it sure is an inconvenience and poor customer service. this pretty much mirrors my exact experience lately, too.

a) instead of writing some external script to generate and fund all the instawallet urls, why not just ask the owners of instawallet to generate them in-house and give you the list? it would be far more efficient.
b) i was also thinking a way to get more people to redeem their links would be to have *some* of them contain 1 or 5 or maybe 10 btc.... (while most contain 0.01 btc, they could be like those instant scratch lottery tickets where you win 'up to' a certain amount... a top prize).

Additionally, upward mobility in this country is dead. If you weren't born rich, you'll never be rich.
uh, which one? I meant the US specifically, but it's basically true of any first-world country at this point in time. anyone poor bugger in any first-world country has enormous opportunity to be rich... you just have to jump on the internet to see the potential anyone with a few hundred dollars startup has these days. If you're being sarcastic then... ZING! If you're being serious... then you need help. completely serious. anyone that can't see how to make money on the internet 'needs help'. furthermore, anyone that earns just about any amount of income has the opportunity to become wealthy a la "Richest Man in Babylon" style. So all I need $1,000 start up cash and an internet connection and I can become a multi-millionaire? Then why aren't we all multi-millionaires? Are you a multi-millionaire? with $1000 and an internet connection, anyone would have the same (thousands of) opportunities to become a multi-millionaire. but most people wouldn't, through lack of dedication, motivation, persistence, discipline, etc, etc. i'm not a multi-millionaire yet (personally i struggle with procrastination), but that doesn't mean i can't see the myriad opportunities to become one. bonus edit: thanks explodicle!

Storing a whole business card in a picture readable when offline would surely distort it much more. How about a vector image? I don't understand. The difference between vector and bitmap is only in the storage format. QR-like codes work even after printing when the storage format is "ink on paper". Sure in an SVG you can embed arbitrary information. You can add a whole book without violating the SVG standard and without distorting the image's visual representation Check it out. It's 3.9MB and for convenience I put the bible as the title but other and new tags are perfectly allowed in the standard: i thought bruno was saying "how about embedding a vector image into the photo, instead of embedding text data".

i think that's a false conclusion. that assumes everyone pays exactly the same total % in tax, however i think the wealthy pay far less in percentage terms because they form companies, get bigger breaks, etc.

I've noticed there seem to be fewer trolly/negative types and more productive conversations occurring here lately. It's nice you would say that, you jerk*
