461  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][GAP] Gapcoin - Prime Gap Search - New Math Algo - CPU / GPU - Zero Premine on: November 19, 2014, 06:34:45 PM
Being physicist and unfortunately not so into math i watched this today (and the 20min more footage) about prime gaps and kinda liked it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkMXdShDdtY

Some questions:

Is there also world records for primes that have a gap of 2 ? Can gapcoin find them or because of sieves it may pass primes (I am not sure i understand how sieves work)?

I am kinda excited with primes lately. What should i read to understand how gapcoin finds gaps? Does it need really advanced mathematics?

Congratulations for the record! Smiley

I see 6 bounties on the OP

I am pledging 15 gaps for each bounty there is and will be created until i say i dont Tongue

So where can i send some gapcoins for the bounties?

I just created an address for each bounty:
(the first merit bounty was already paid)

  • working cuda miner binaries + source code   GdtFcBN2xix3pNVZV7EjWuLS1Tkp6jw56B
  • second running pool   GbZMaSMvzgYUpLHLRCcsxhVeBLvf9GUo3n
  • first merit within the top 10   GaTLAKiA8jVsFTdcUFL1uDNGKvaBzbQDbf
  • first merit within the top 5   GPqdXdMGJjaZk2EZYgbxPb692jsBpzUoCf
  • first merit, which breaks the world record   GNxcqXsAQMN1ShU3M5kmQko13zhzvciMRE

Once the requirement for a bounty is fulfilled, the among of the respective address will be credit to the finder / developer.

Try to resync your wallet, by deleting wallet files and recreate from scratch with 25 words seed.

Ok, will try tonight.

Thanks for the info

Always make backups if you are deleting the wallets !

  • every year
  • every half year
  • every three months

Every half year seems fine. Three months is too quick in my opinion.

Also, I will give 25 GAP for everyone who will translate the OP into his mother language.

I'll add another 25 GAP

I agree that every half year seems fine.
I was thinking 3 months but if we dont manage to gain more people interested soon enough so fast halving would be catastrophic.

I would like to have more people arguing about the matter. What miners have to say? What other holders have to say?

Also guys, i dont think its wise to give 50 gaps for every translation. I mean there are other ideas that can use funds.  Like a giveaway of gaps by tweeting something. A small bounty for people making some art/infographics/funny pictures about gapcoin. Probably a bounty for a second pool. A bounty for merchants that will accept gapcoin (they should probably need to have some trust and wait at least like a month to get the bounty)

Also i think we should popularize a phrase or something. I was thinking something like  'We dont need you to buy gapcoin. We need you to mine gapcoin!' because after all i personally want to be part of a record breaking!

Anyway i am just throwing ideas to stimulate some chatting Cheesy
467  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][GAP] Gapcoin - Prime Gap Search - New Math Algo - CPU / GPU - Zero Premine on: November 09, 2014, 04:39:47 PM
It's a shame because this is one of the few coins that do actually useful work. Hopefully people will continue to mine even if it doesn't bring great profit for now.

Seems like we have to get the price up somehow.
I'll buy some GAP, but I don't have that much BTC to make a reasonable impact.

Thats not a solution. We need more people to be interested in the coin.

I have proposed a more aggressive reward halving (this will be the last time i propose it) but i havent see anyone talking against or for it. No chat at all.

Another thing sure is needed is someone to build a small 'advertising campaign'. Send emails to crypto related news websites, ask other exchanges to add the coin, ask vendors to accept it, some twitter work etc... Generally someone for 'public image' and organising the community...

Maybe we should gather a bounty and give like 5-10 gaps for everyone who will translate the OP on his mother language if there isnt one already.

Its a good thing that difficulty is raising though Smiley
468  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][GAP] Gapcoin - Prime Gap Search - New Math Algo - CPU / GPU - Zero Premine on: November 08, 2014, 05:53:36 PM
I was CPU mining , but when GPU "arrived" I stoped ...

I didnt. GPU is still buggy it seems or people dont know how to configure it. I am still getting a few blocks per day. Once network hashrate gets like 25% more then i will consider stopping too.

What bothers me as i have told before is that i would prefer a more aggresive block reward halving instead of the 2 years one in order sto stimulate more speculation.

And at least some basic marketing, not about gapcoin being the future of the cryptos but about proposing people to try it and be part of some record breaking which generally help crypto exposure...

Any ideas ?
469  Economy / Gambling / Re: Martingale Strategy on: November 06, 2014, 04:31:00 AM
Recently, I heard about the martingale strategy and I was wondering about it. Are there any flaws with it? If you haven't heard of the strategy, it's basically when you bet twice the amount you lost.

Say I bet 0.01 then if I lose I would bet 0.02 then 0.04 and so on until I win. Is there anything wrong with this? If you don't have much bitcoins you could bet 1 satoshi.

all martingale does is shifting the odds.

lets say you play a dice game offering only 50:50 odds. using martingale you can make 25:75 for you (you win more often but less).

its still -EV: so only way to win is not to play Wink

PS: martingale does work if you have a game with does not have a bet-maximum: you wont find any...

So this method doesn't work then?

Nope. There are some nice simulations that i cant find right now. Basically you need infinite money supply in order to be sure. And most gambling tables will have a maximum.

472  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 05, 2014, 06:51:30 PM
@Blitz: I'll admit, you've been around much longer than me, so my impressions of the early days of BTC trading are pretty vague. Could be that you're right about the percentages being (roughly) the same.

I will say that much: the almost linear, nearly uninterrupted decline from the $32 peak to the $2 double bottom in 2011 looks almost comical by today's standards. Not a single big mean reversion trade. My point is: looking at the 2011 decline from $32, I simply can't imagine there was any substantial capital in the hands of what you'd call 'traders', otherwise there would have been the occasional pause when a major resistance was being hit and traders, on average, closed a short to see where price is heading.

It was even more comical when it reached negative numbers (i remember seeing negative values back then but i cant find any picture right now) on mtgox back then and people who panicked and sold for almost zero wanted to reset all trades of the day.
473  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: November 05, 2014, 06:39:41 PM
I accidentially pasted one of my XMR addresses in the google search bar and the following pastebin came up:

http://pastebin.com/LEhABQcu

Just out of curiosity: Could someone in the know tell me what it shows and why my address would show up there?

I only use it for mining.

Thanks

my guess: your pool op made a pastebin of a connection error to show it to someone Wink

Yeah probably something like that.

onemorebtc can you please explain me your signature?

Hi. You are using a block explorer for Gapcoin that apparently doesnt show coin supply.

I would suggest you use this block explorer http://coinia.net/gapcoin/blockexplorer.php  where you can see coin supply here http://coinia.net/gapcoin/getbalance.php?api=total

Very nice! High merits are coming faster than i thought!

Lets send some emails to major bitcoin/altcoin press sites that we are about to break some high records! Gapcoin helps spreading awareness of what the bitcoin protocol can do! Anyone have a email list?

Hi guys! When I try to mine solo, the miner shows me what it couldn't connect to server
waiting for gapcoind...
Is something wrong with my configuration of .bat file?
My .bat file looks like "gapminer.exe --host 127.0.0.1 --port 31397 --user myuser --pwd mypassword --threads 7"
I have created .conf file in AppData folder and using username and pass from this file.

Cheers!

what is your .conf ? Apart from pass and username ofc...

And just to be sure you are running gapcoind too right?

btw you can mine directly with gapcoind with setgenerate true . As far as i know gapminer still isnt faster than core miner...
478  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][GAP] Gapcoin - Prime Gap Search - New Math Algo - CPU only - Zero Premine on: October 31, 2014, 01:39:30 PM
Decided to encrypt the wallet with a large sum of GAP. Entered the password. But when after some time I tried to unlock the wallet, the password did not match. Backup, I was not. For two days I worked on this problem. Eventually scanned the harddrive with WinHEX and found all the fragments 01D63081D30201010420 on disk, immediately after they begin private key. Then I entered these data in written in Python script that appealed to each of these places on the drive was reading data and recode them in the desired format. Private key + address. Turned out to be a large file, I'll run a search and found there is a lost private key by address. Victory!

but why did that happened? Should we be wary of encrypting the wallet?

Agran first of all your blockchain explorer, charts, faucet and everything are great!

I would only request a detail view of merits. Thats all.

Meanwhile hashrate doubled in the last 24-48 hours!

Anyone has requested coinmarketcap to add gapcoin?

What do you mean by detail? Like this: http://gapcoin.org/primegaps.php, but with more customized view?

Got another 29+ merit today!

if you scroll down at statistics you can see the hyperlink 'detail' Wink
