Indeed, I'm also getting this error. It makes it extremely difficult to view threads (I'm using the RSS as a bypass).
1062  Economy / Speculation / Re: Top 20 days for Bitcoin on: February 01, 2013, 12:33:35 AM
It's the last day of January, so I'm trying to get this post in before the scheduled downtime. January is now officially over, and the second highest month in rankings.

January's results have been finalized. It ranks #2 on the top 10 months of Bitcoin's weighted average. All seven months since July 2012 have a berth in the top 10 months.

1. 2011-06   18.55
2. 2013-01   16.31
3. 2011-07   14.10
4. 2012-12   13.33
5. 2012-10   11.58
6. 2012-11   11.51
7. 2012-09   11.47
8. 2012-08   10.88
9. 2011-08   9.75
10. 2012-07  8.04

Yesterday's results are in, and we are approaching the all-time high. Eight of the top twenty are from January 2013, whereas the rest are from June 2011. Three of the top ten are from January 2013. Eight of the top twenty occurred in the last decade. Yesterday ranks 4th at 19.48, highest since 2011-06-10.

In the top twenty weekly weighted averages, the last 7 days now ranks #10. It is the highest-ranked week not fully in June 2011. Six of the top twenty are fully in January 2013, whereas the others are fully in June 2011; however, only one of the top ten is not fully within June 2011. Note that some weeks include days without any trade. Breaking the weekly all-time high may not be so far away; I would venture a guess in that this will happen before the daily all-time high is breached.

The decadal weighted average pits our most recent decade at #12 at 18.23. It is the second-highest-ranked decade not fully in June 2011. Four of the top twenty decades are fully within January 2013; 15 are fully within June 2011, and the other is split between May and June 2011. Note that a significant portion of the June decades include days without trade.

The 30-day weighted average has the most recent 30 days ranking #22, while the most recent 60 days ranks #26 on the 60-day list. Although the #1 for these seems far away right now, I would not be surprised if the 30-day periods of late enter the top 20.

The most recent 91 days ties for #11 on the 91-day list. It is not far from #1 at this point, and this record is likely to fall soon.

On the 182-day list, the 39 past 182-day periods have, one over the other, broken the all-time high. Unless the price decides to meander below 12 USD and set new record volumes, this streak is almost guaranteed to last at least one more day.

In a similar vein, the past 53 365-day periods have broken the all-time high consecutively. Even so, the averages are near 8 USD; although Bitcoin prices are often high, it is very rare for them to remain high for a prolonged period of time.

1063  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-01-30 Is Bitcoin Sharia Compliant? on: January 31, 2013, 10:25:32 PM
I think Bitcoin is in the interest of Sharia law because it lowers interest rates to zero, making the current system untenable. Thanks to the lack of inflation, Bitcoin's oft-negative paper inflation rates would make it impractical to continue charging interest.

And we're nearing twenty again, and with it bringing (possible) new record highs.

Yesterday's results are in. Eight of the top twenty are from January 2013, whereas the rest are from June 2011. Two of the top ten are from January 2013. Eight of the top twenty occurred in the last decade. Yesterday ranks 7th at 19.48, highest since 2011-06-15.

The 30-day weighted average has the most recent 30 days ranking #26, while the most recent 60 days ranks #29 on the 60-day list. Although the #1 for these seems far away right now, I would not be surprised if the 30-day periods of late enter the top 20.

The most recent 91 days ranks #21 on the 91-day list. Although not yet in the top 20, there is not a long way to go before we reach #1.

On the 182-day list, the 39 past 182-day periods have, one over the other, broken the all-time high. Unless the price decides to meander below 12 USD and set new record volumes, this streak is almost guaranteed to last at least one more day.

For users with more than 4 posts who filled out this info in their profiles:

1,660 Male
65 Female
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=stats

This says ratio 2.9:1.

Is that because it includes also members with less than 4 posts?

It's because a lot of people didn't submit this kind of info - you included Smiley
What I don't understand is how jgarzik's ratio and the ratio I found on that stats-page can be different when the data source is seemingly the same.
Most of the "females" on this board are zero-post spambots, which register with a 1:1 sex ratio. See this page and all subsequent pages for the zero-post spambots.
1066  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon is (unfortunately) a scam. Here is why. on: January 30, 2013, 09:59:04 PM
Looks like Jeff received his package...
Should I hold my breath waiting for those crying scam to apologise? Wink
They don't need to apologize.

I never cried "scam" and I always maintained that Avalon, at least, actually did ship. Even so, I side with the sceptical here. They did nothing wrong. They pointed out, however shallow the logic, that there was a chance that Avalon was a scam. This is more information to everyone. This helps avoid groupthink.

The doubters need not apologize. In fact, I would like to thank them. It helps prove to the real scammers how difficult it would be to scam the community, such that even legitimate products are labelled scams. It ensures a better, safer community in Bitcoin's future.

More troll math, not so troll:

x = 0.999... (means infinite nines)
10x = 9.999...
10x - x = 9.999... -0.999...
9x = 9
x = 1

PS: I   like   to use more   spaces than   I should   .

But this is a perfectly valid proof. The infinite series only differ by their first term, and can be subtracted hence.
1068  Economy / Economics / Re: Won't transaction fees become wildly unpredictable as bitcoin grows? on: January 30, 2013, 02:02:22 AM
I was checking out a chart on Blockchain which many of us have seen before. It details the total BTC payouts per day of all the mined blocks.  Unfortunately as a newbie, I'm not allowed to post a direct link yet.

But this chart also brought a little long-term concern for me.  Many slush pools (and indeed practically everyone mining out there supporting the network) is doing so based on the relatively steady payouts from uncovering the initial 21 million bitcoins.  Except, as time goes on and these exponentially decrease, the primary incentive for mining at all will be the transaction fees.

It seems that transaction fees are much harder to predict though, and are more closely based to the overall activity of the bitcoin economy.  Will this make it exceptionally hard to mine in the future?  Will it become analogous to playing the lottery?

No.

The Bitcoin network is constantly growing. Our current 1 MB block size limit is obviously unsustainable, and will soon be raised and (hopefully) eventually eliminated. Due to the size of the Bitcoin economy in the future, and the volume of transactions, miners will no longer need high transaction fees for every transaction. Transaction fees could eventually decrease to the point where microtransactions become feasible, and miners would still make much more than they do today.

If transaction volume is low, then miners will shut down and difficulty will decrease. If transaction volume is high, then miners will restart and difficulty will increase. Transaction fees may be unpredictable, but they will be both sufficient and manageable.

Perhaps === in PHP should compare the remaining characters anyways in cause of a failure.

That would be inconsistent in a short-circuited language. If I'm not mistaken, the following in PHP:

Code:
1 && ($var = 1);
if (isset($var)) echo "Set.";
else echo "Unset.";

produces the output:

Code:
Unset.

String comparison should also be similarly short-circuited for consistency's sake.

With each coming day, new record highs become more and more likely. A devastating rally, for certain.

Yesterday's results are in. Seven of the top twenty are from January 2013, whereas the rest are from June 2011. However, only one of the top ten is not in June 2011. Seven of the top twenty occurred in the last eight days. Yesterday ranks 8th at 19.17, highest since 2011-06-15.

The 10-day weighted average pits our most recent decade at #13 at 17.51. It is the second-highest-ranked decade not fully in June 2011. Three of the top twenty decades are fully within January 2013; 16 are fully within June 2011, and the other is split between May and June 2011. Note that a significant portion of the June decades include days without trade.

The 30-day weighted average has the most recent 30 days ranking #28, while the most recent 60 days ranks #30 on the 60-day list. The most recent 91 days ranks #28 on the 91-day list. Although the #1 for these seems far away right now, I would not be surprised if the 30-day periods of late enter the top 20.

On the 182-day list, the 38 past 182-day periods have, one over the other, broken the all-time high. Unless the price decides to meander below 12 USD and set new record volumes, this streak is almost guaranteed to last at least one more day.

Another approach would be to prefix with 1FakeTcG7zJJW3Tp3EG72dVpZfghwV4pr so it's clear to even people expecting a real address Wink

Once upon a time, my Casascius.com website spit out a payment address starting with "1Fake" that was totally generated as a coincidence.  That wasn't you, was it?

Do you do custom coins? Can I buy some coins with my portrait on them?

Isn't this problem moot if we use my proposal? A 't'-prefixed version 128 address has no chance of being randomly generated, but otherwise is formed exactly like a regular address.

The intervention you mention isn't necessarily bad. Central banks do have the experience necessary to control inflation, and in a reduced role they can help regulate inflation accordingly.
1073  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Avalon ASIC] Batch #2 pre-Sale Thread on: January 29, 2013, 03:17:49 PM
As I understand the first batch of 300 has been preordered but not shipped except for 2 units. (why haven't all shipped?)

Also if the asics are ready why can't proof be posted?

100+ has been shipped already, 40 some on one route and 60 some on another.
1074  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Community discussion: Precede fake and throwaway addresses with a #? on: January 29, 2013, 03:15:05 PM
If you don't want someone to send coins to a fake address then make it invalid so people can't.  Make more sense than hoping they know a # means don't send.

Valid address: 1GQQwTcG7zJJW3Tp3EG72dVpZfghwV4prD  <- you can send coins there if you want.
Invalid address: 1GQQwTcG7zJJW3Tp3EG72dVpZfghwV4pra <- you can't send coins here even if you wanted to.

By changing a single digit it invalidates the checksum.  Try to send coins to the invalid address, you can't.
Code:
E:\bitcoind> bitcoind sendtoaddress 1GQQwTcG7zJJW3Tp3EG72dVpZfghwV4pra 0.01
error: {"code":-5,"message":"Invalid Bitcoin address"}

It's very sad that Bitcoin does not have a system for documentation and fake addresses, similar in principle to NANP 555. I propose using version 128 addresses (prefix: 't') as documentation addresses.

I never expected it to be so quick, but we are in a severe rally again. Highest values since June 2011 are going to be seen across the board.

On the 182-day list, the 37 past 182-day periods have, one over the other, broken the all-time high. Unless the price decides to meander below 12 USD and set new record volumes, this streak is almost guaranteed to last at least one more day.

Really?

Did the SMF devs loop through every single character and compare them individually?

Not explicitly, but that's what happens when you compare strings normally.

How would you circumvent this? Perhaps compare the remaining characters anyways, even though it's not computationally optimal? Store a hash of the session id instead of the actual session id?
1077  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is mining profitable? Um, duh? on: January 29, 2013, 02:15:44 PM
Mining never makes sense when unprofitable, even if Bitcoin will go up tomorrow. That's cause it is always the inferior option. Take the following comparison when mining was unprofitable:

Option A: Mine
Electrical bill: $5 / day.
Gross profit: 0.4 BTC / day @ $10 / BTC

Option B: Shut off the rigs and use electrical bill money to buy BTC instead
Investment: $5 / day
Gross profit: 0.5 BTC / day @ $10 / BTC

No matter which way the price of 1 BTC goes henceforth, Option B will have earned more money.

Improperly formatted title.

Why do you insist the title be formatted correctly? What advantage does this postulate?
common courtesy through uniformity

Well there is that... but also it gives:
proper sort order when you click the subject column
Improved ability to see if a particular article has already been posted.

You could sort by posting date, which is more uniform than sorting by subject (which is sensitive to simple errors like YYYY-2-DD, which postdates YYYY-12-DD).

I concede the improved duplicate detection though.

I doubt this is a scam. It's an absolute ripoff anyways, so there's no point in scamming anyone too. A scammer would have had a marked-down price, not a marked-up one.
1080  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: GetSomeCoin.com - Banned by Google Adwords on: January 29, 2013, 06:06:47 AM
I just launched a new site about Bitcoin at http://GetSomeCoin.com

I wanted to get it launched by Privacy Day on Monday and I ran some Adwords ads for the site (I also run Privacy.net).  After about 2 days I just got a note from Google that my site violates their TOS and they pointed me to this policy and said I cannot run Adwords ads for it.

When CoinURL stabilizes up again under mc_lovin's ownership, I would recommend it. Anonymous Ads is good, but not as good as CoinURL.
