"Social equality" is hardly socialistic. There is no Fed in Bitcoin, no upper class. Every node is equal and capable of accomplishing the same. Bitcoin gives us social justice, and that's the way it should be.

Way to go making those words meaningless.  Roll Eyes

Does capitalism imply inequality? No. Does Bitcoin imply capitalism? Not necessarily. But Bitcoin implies equality because everyone is on equal footing. It is, by its founding principles, fair to all. Take decentralization away from Bitcoin and you end up with PayPal.

Has there ever been a poll done on "Are you male or female?" Would love to know an actual calculation on that!

Yes. See my sig for one of them.

I have contributed to the wiki in the past. However, now I cannot even edit my userpage. Why is this? Can someone with proper permissions grant me these privileges? If even registered, contributing users are barred from editing, then it isn't much of a wiki.

Nevermind: It seems the wiki has put a barrier to editing so as to stop spambots.

You did not get his point. All men are created equal; not in aptitude, skills or knowledge but in status as human beings with corporeal bodies.

With Bitcoin there is no way for anyone to either (1) confiscate another's bitcoins against their will or (2) dilute the value of another's bitcoins through special privilege with monetary creation.

In other words, Bitcoin operates like gravity or electricity or any other natural law because it is based on the laws of mathematics as applied in cryptography. The effects are equally applied to all in the blockchain.

Then don't use socialistic languages to describe bitcoin.

What bitcoin does is give us a very special form of economic regulation.

"Social equality" is hardly socialistic. There is no Fed in Bitcoin, no upper class. Every node is equal and capable of accomplishing the same. Bitcoin gives us social justice, and that's the way it should be.
1106  Economy / Speculation / Re: Top 20 days for Bitcoin on: January 28, 2013, 03:07:29 AM
As another day rolls in, we seem to be nearing some records for this year. If our current uptrend continues, we may soon see record-high weekly or decadely weighted averages.

Yesterday's results are in. Five of the top twenty are from January 2013, while the rest are from June 2011. Five of the top twenty occurred in the last six days. Yesterday ranks 12th at 17.65, highest since 2013-01-24 and 2nd highest in 2013.

On the 182-day list, the 36 past 182-day periods have, one over the other, broken the all-time high. Unless the price decides to meander below 12 USD and set new record volumes, this streak is almost guaranteed to last at least one more day.

In a similar vein, the past 50 365-day periods have broken the all-time high consecutively. Even so, the averages are near 8 USD: although Bitcoin prices are often high, it is very rare for them to remain high for a prolonged period of time.

Isn't this information already stored in the profile though?
To get this info just for your profile I need to lookup transactions table 1 time using your username, but to get leader board I need to lookup for ALL users (i.e. average execution time will be x-times more, where x-total number of Peerbet users).

What about a "Submit score" button, so people who have won a lot can submit their to the leaderboard?
1108  Economy / Gambling / Re: Peerbet.org - Play without house edge! on: January 28, 2013, 02:40:02 AM
Can I request the following features?

1. Top donators (lists the people who have donated the most to Peerbet)
2. Top net winners (lists the people who have netted the most profit)
3. Top players (lists the people who have earned the most (Won total))
4. Leaderboard opt-out (allows a player to opt out of the leaderboard)
Just tried to execute test query, it took 65 seconds and will be even longer as transactions table continuously grows. So I think leader board has little sense as most of the users will just close browser's tab before the page will be loaded.

P.S. Donators list is different story, it can be fetched almost instantly and I will enable it when will run donation campaign (at first I need to attract more users that this campaign be successful).

Isn't this information already stored in the profile though?

Spent total:    0.00000000 BTC
Won total:    0.00000000 BTC (#3)
Deposits total:    0.00000000 BTC
Coupons total:    0.00000000 BTC
Withdrawals total:    0.00000000 BTC
Net profit total:    0.00000000 BTC (#2)
Net profit today:    0.00000000 BTC

If it isn't, why not? Raffles can't be revoked after they're done, so couldn't this info be put into the user table? That would save CPU power when people are looking at their own profile too.
1109  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The profile of a Bitcoin User on: January 28, 2013, 02:36:24 AM
I honestly think this is stereotyping too much. A lot of these don't fit me in particular.

  • Nerd
  • Smart
  • Geek
Really subjective. I don't strongly identify with any of those words, but I can see how they can be applied. Other Bitcoin users, not so much. If we were all smart, Pirate@40 wouldn't have happened.

  • 90% Men
I'll concede that most Bitcoiners are male.

  • 70% age range 20-40 years
I'm not personally, and many other Bitcoiners aren't (e.g. Phinnaeus Gage), but the 70% is probably reasonable.

  • Speak English (first or second language)
Most do, but not all.

  • Think more anarchical
  • Like to be anonymous
  • Not religious
  • Like conspiracy theories
  • Use more Android devices
These are really overgeneralizing. For example, I am indifferent to anonymity (I feel that anonymity can be dangerous in the wrong hands), despise conspiracy theories, and do not use Android. That's 3/5 that I don't fit myself, so the community as a whole will probably fit it even less.

Bitcoin is not remotely like anything like Ithaca HOURS dollars or any other "community currency". It is a global capitalistic monetary system that doesn't give a damn about social justice, equality, and the like.

It does indeed. It takes the power to manipulate wealth away from plutocrats and gives them to the working class. It evens the playing field. Everyone has equality in a Bitcoin system; there are no classes, no rich and no poor, just Bitcoin users. Really, we don't need HOURS if we have Bitcoin because it works just as well.

Bitcoin is ideally suited for small international transactions while community currencies are by their very nature designed to be used within a local community. About the only thing they have in common is that they take power away from currencies at the nation state level such as USD, or a at the level of group of nation states such as EUR. There is actually a place for both. The more I think about this issue the more clear it becomes that Keynesian economics makes the most sense at the local community level, namely Ithaca hours and similar community currencies, while Austrian economics makes the most sense at the international level, namely Bitcoin and Gold.

To become a global currency, Bitcoin first needs to be a local currency. That's why there are so many "Bitcoin village" projects in the making.

This is getting away from the point after I hijacked this thread (but I think it is totally relevant to it if Muslim scientists really do view themselves differently, which I do not know).

If you are on the cutting edge and taking a risk on a project in business what is the chances you will be right?
-I dont know but it is low

If you are on the cutting edge and taking the risk on a project in academia what is the chances you will be right*?
-80-90%

*If right=original hypothesis supported by the statistics run on the results

This is just one way of showing how absurd the current literature is. I would love to get evidence against my interpretation because I have become more and more horrified since I started looking into this.

Business is just as unlikely to give positive results as academia. Neither form of funding is sustainable. We need a return to the classical university system, where funding comes from those who desire to learn and therefore goes to the cutting edge research that those people care about.
1114  Economy / Speculation / Re: Top 20 days for Bitcoin on: January 27, 2013, 02:09:03 AM
i want to know the top 30 days now

is the weighted average just the average price in terms of how much volume traded there; whereas the average on gox site is just an average price per trade executed (i.e. 50 trades at $16 for 1BTC and 50 trades at $17 for 10BTC would average $16.50)

Basically, the weighted average is calculated with the following formula:

Code:
Volume in USD / Volume in BTC

This means that a negligible trade will have little effect (as it affects neither numerator nor denominator), whereas a large 10000 BTC trade would have a significant effect.

The top 30 isn't any more interesting than the top 20:

1117  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Just bought my ticket for Bitcoin 2013 in San Jose! on: January 26, 2013, 04:55:47 AM
Hope its better than the excruciatingly embarrassing ones of the past.
this will be the first real one is the US right?
Previous conferences are infamous for having been organized by people who have since gone into disrepute - NYC by Bruce Wagner, Prague with involvement from Bitcoin consultancy, London by Nefario and Bitcoin consultancy. But I think all of them were actually quite good (and the first real conference in US is definitely NYC Aug 2011).

1. They have all been reasonably organized, and better with each conference.
2. The organization is just an excuse. It's an important excuse inasmuch as it's what brings people together, but it's actually meeting other people from the community that is important. And we've done plenty of that.

Edit:
The SAME material covered at these conferences can be found in:

1. this forum (free)
2. Bitcoin Magazine ($8.88...wow)
3. Google (free)
4. Youtube videos (if we're lucky...also Free)
There's your problem, right there. You think conferences are about "material". The material is an excuse to get people to meet (and to get press coverage, too).

internet, skype, facebook, youtube, twitter, etc, etc, etc.
!= Meeting in person.

yes, unfortunately not understood by many here.

shaking someone's hand, looking that person in the eye, expressing one's self with body language, and engaging in one-to-one conversation magically strips out most of the bullshit you get on all those internet channels.

that's funny you once again may have misjudged me Cypher. I understand the importance of meeting people in person when TRUST is needed.

You forget, this is Bitcoin. No trust is needed. Hence irrelevant to need to go to a bitcoin conference unless you are one of the early adopters that just wants to increase the value of his stash he got for $0.005/BTC.

I can only offer interest if you are not Jewish.

Under Jewish law, you are not allowed to charge another Jew interest. But here, you are rendering interest upon another Jew. I don't see why this is forbidden.
1119  Other / Meta / Re: [POLL] Should BFL ALL threads be moved to GAMBLING or Off-topic subforums? on: January 26, 2013, 04:10:20 AM
This is clearly a bad-faith poll. The people who voted yes are not actually serious, and therefore this thread belongs in Off-Topic and not Meta.
