That video is wicked cool! Wow. Had to share it on Facebook.

The vid is also good in showing to others that monero development is ongoing, its far from dead, many ppl help, and is constantly evolving.
The Monero bears and shorts will get to play until 0,9 is out. After that all bets are off.

Wht do you mean. Beta of 0.9 for windows is available for a while. What would change for bears and shorts if 0.9 becomes stable?

I mean tagged and official for download from https://getmonero.org/downloads/. What changes for the bears and shorts is that the development work that has been going on for well over 9 months is released officially.  It also means that the process for the necessary hard fork is started.

Edit: A bear can download say the 64bit Windows version from https://getmonero.org/downloads/ and feel comfortable with a short since the binary has a last modified date of 08 December 2014. It also requires over 8 GB of RAM and will fail on the Home Basic versions of Windows Vista and 7.

I'm not sure. Those transactions will be fairly identifiable and will cause problems. I'm told that already Coinbase asks if you are sending coins to an exchange and if so asks for additional documentation. Sending coins to a non-compliant exchange will likely be a serious problem at some point, if not already.

One sends the coins to one's own address first. This is critical in every case. If one uses an exchange to send coins to a third party then in most cases the exchange has by law to ask questions about the third party. This is a very important difference that many miss. In this case it makes no difference if the coin is Bitcoin, Monero or even fiat. Withdraw 200 USD in cash form the bank. No problem. Now in the US ask the bank to send 200 US to your favourite non compliant gambling site and see what happens.

Edit: The problem with Coinbase is that their business model of sending Bitcoin payments on behalf of clients requires a much stricter level of regulatory compliance than if they just stuck to being an exchange and required clients to only withdraw from and deposit to a Bitcoin address under the client's control.
1267  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Could Monero replace Bitcoin soon? on: October 06, 2015, 10:43:07 PM
It is possible but not because of fungibility / privacy. It is very possible because of adaptive blocksize limits and a tail emission that addresses the issue of developing a fee market after the block subsidy ends. The latter is the elephant in the room that very few people in the Bitcoin community are even talking about yet lies at the heart of the blocksize debate.

I have seen you make this argument before and I agree adaptive blocksize limits are important.  I am curious why you feel it is MORE important that the fungibility issue

It is more important because fungibility in Bitcoin can in practice be fixed. The reason why Monero will not replace Bitcoin over fungibility is that in the process of trying to replace Bitcoin, Monero will actually make Bitcoin fungible. A signifcant increase of the market cap of Monero will lead to more exchanges along the lines of Shapeshift.io, Significant trading between Bitcoin and Monero in exchanges domiciled in jurisdictions with strong privacy; together with a large number of transactions well below tipical AML/KNC thresholds is one sure way to legally mix the Bitcoin blockchain. One must keep in mind that many of these transactions will have legitimate business reasons unrelated to trying to mix any Bitcoins.

On the other hand without adaptive blocksize limits Bitcoin will have to keep hard forking or simply not be usable. Most transactions will not be able to be confirmed regardless of how much or little "taint" they may have. Furthermore venture capital will simply flee when faced with the reality that there is little, if any, opportunity for growth in Bitcoin. This alone rather than fungiblity can cause Monero to replace Bitcoin.

Then there is the question of what happens when the Bitcoin emission runs out. How exactly is a fee market supposed to develop? I have yet to see an asnwer to this question. Monero has solved this with a tail emission. The only other top 20 POW other than Monero coin that has solved this more serious second question is Dogecoin. Dogecoin also has a tail emission.

That makes sense to me. Basically if you withdraw a very large quantity (of BBR, XMR) from a known entity and then move it all again a few minutes later blockchain analysis and common sense could help form a very strong presumption (not proof) of the relation of those transactions.  The more transactions that occur and the longer the time period between such transactions the harder they would be to connect.

... but one does not move it right away. Instead one moves a different amount after a random period of time with a significant mixin.

What an Einstein man! Of course I'm short in XMR, but not with a few tens of BTC, rather more. And like me, there are lots lots of big traders of the circle with the same position.

And yes, I'm here to create a bearish sentiment (wait, It was not bearish?? Shocked) . Anyway, I can say whatever and you can say whatever, we won't affect the market, but I'm just telling you what's gonna happen here. Thats all. Wink

Good. This could be real fun to watch, especially with upcoming 0.9 release. I have long ago taken delivery of my XMR and have zero debt together with a significant CAD postion. Taking delivery is the most effective way to squeeze shorts to the wall. One just sits back and waits.

This worked very well for me back in late 2011 / early 2012 with pirateat40 and his massive short Bitcoin position. By the way pirateat40's 7% per week interest on Bitcoin in 2011 made a lot of sense when Bitcoin was crashing at a rate closer to 8% per week compounded. The pirate could make 1% profit on the spread by simply shorting Bitcoin and holding USD, while Bitcoin crashed all the way down to 2 USD. After this part was over the fun began ...

It s time to sell Monero Grin Look at that price https://www.poloniex.com/exchange#btc_xmr

Is there any plan to save Monero? or do we all abandon this sinking ship?

Sure on the eve of the 0.9 release, sell. Enjoy the 0.8.8.6 binaries with their 8+ GB of RAM requirements while you still can, they will be history soon.

BRB literally dying...ok all better!

If the rumours are true, the remainder of DASH is now piling into AEON.

...is it true?

Grin Cool Grin Cheesy Cool Cheesy

Something just does not add up here. I mean really AEON has a capitalization of  38,233 USD and a 24 hour volume 269 USD.  http://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/aeon/

We need a tie breaking mechanism. For example one can look at the result before the vote that led to the tie and use that instead.

We are now a few hours past UTC and the vote is still tied. If everyone could agree on a proposal like this we can proceed. Or another voter can break the tie.

Anyone can calculate the result the above proposal would lead to for this move. Please try to decide on whether the tiebreak proposal one ArticMine is appropriate or not without taking into account the 4th move it would lead to in this game.

I think in this particular instance since the situation of the tie occurred before a rule was proposed, a more fair method to resolve this tie is with a randomizer (for example last bit of a future Bitcoin block hash). Adopting the proposed rule going forward would be fine though.

Yes. This makes sense to me.
1275  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DASH] Dash | First Anonymous Coin | Inventor of X11, DGW, Darksend and InstantX on: October 04, 2015, 01:44:59 AM
Rumour has it there is a large whale who is making a stand at 2 USD / ~0.0084 XBT.
Not a rumour, Otoh has placed the dollar order on Cryptsy of around 21,000 Dash(posted way back, about it)
He will be happy to mop up the dumpers, and has been known to keep topping the order up on previous occasions and always kept to his word, I dare you to dare him  Grin

What I am wondering about is why he is putting up this wall on the DASH/USD market, whereas the DASH/BTC market has way more volume. DASH had a relatively high volume day today (aggregate of all exchanges), but there is only $77 volume on the Cryptsy DASH/USD pair. Furthermore, I think a wall in that particular market isn't really going to work, since most dumpers want BTC anyway. I imagine it's quite a hassle to get your USD out of Cryptsy as well. Just curious about the reasoning behind this move.

It comes down to not wishing an exposure to Bitcoin. If one considers the current situation with the blocksize debate and turmoil in the Bitcoin community it makes a lot of sense. It also has the advantage of decoupling Dash from Bitcoin, which also makes a lot of sense. Bitcoin in my opinion has two very serious issues:
1) There is no clear way for how a market for fees will develop after the emission runs out. This could actually be fatal.
2) There is no real solution to the blocksize issue that has been proposed. I suspect the reason for this is related to 1.
The question in my mind for Dash is: Will there be a solution for 1) and / or 2) above in the proposed announcement next Wednesday?

Agree on both counts, unfortunately.

Unfortunately because Satoshi's coins are indeed a negative for the ecosystem. People need to trust that:
1) Satoshi won't just dump 'em for diversification (I personally doubt it)
2) Satoshi won't dump 'em for some other reason (ie, he goes insane, finds himself under duress, etc)
3) His keys don't get hacked
4) He doesn't ultimately pass the stash on to others who are less ideologically-motivated and less careful than he seems to be

In short, it seems clear that the ecosystem would be better off without having to worry about the above, even if they're only tiny concerns.

... but there remains the issue of Satoshi dying and creating a massive capital gains / estate tax liability. When it comes to Satoshi's coins I am far more concerned about Satoshi's estate than Satoshi.

I think by market information he means that newcomers will try the precompiled binaries (non-DB) and that's possibly their first impression of Monero.
...

The market impact is what does the newcomer do in both cases once the precomplied binaries are downloaded and run?
1) Buy
2) Sell
