I am very surprised to see that XT is winning. I know this is not a lot of votes but still. I thought that majority of people here supports bigger blocks but not the XT.

I don't know what to say, but it seems there will be a lot of drama about this XT thing in the near future!

This thread has alots more votes , so you can see general censensus of the community : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=68655.31220

Too bad Thermos censor it and lock it. Its the largest thread of the forum too
.

Bold. This is the scary part.
1442  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A simple poll: The future of Bitcoin block size on: August 18, 2015, 11:22:44 PM
I voted for XT. Gavin's proposal is not perfect but it is good enough. The reality is that Bitcoin needs to scale in order to remain relevant; furthermore while this endless debate rages on technology keeps growing at a rate faster than what is being proposed in XT.

If Bitcoin does not deal with the scaling issue soon another coin will step up to the plate and make this debate moot by making both the Core and XT forks worthless.

Help please:

I would like to run a full Monero node under Windows 7. Unfortunately, I only have 8gb of memory available. Is there any build for Windows 7 that actually uses the new and memory friendly database? I really would love to run that node.

https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero if you follow the readme at the bottom you should be able to compile it for yourself... atleast i did it for Win 7. And if any errors occur just join #monero-dev and i think they will be willing to help you out.

Thanks :-)

I will try myself first.

Btw, MSYS2 could not be installed into some subdir. It had to be c:\msys2 ... also, mintty likes to crash here and there.

Ok, it failed.. the documentation of how to use MSYS2 and build Monero under Windows needs an update and makeover :-(

More details would be helpful. It probably just seems obvious to me because I know what commands in that section are relevant.

It's too many little things, like missing packages, not working cmake, etc. The easiest would be to follow the various steps with a fresh msys2 install and see where things go wrong. It's quickly done; took me less than 45min.

It can de done, I have done it on Windows 10 64bit in a virtual machine, but this is far from friendly. The problem is that the pacman commands, when installing the dependencies fail, more often than not due to unresponsive or slow repositories. In order to get my compile to work on Windows  I had to retry the installation of the dependencies numerous times. What one is in effect doing here is installing the GNU tool chain on top of Windows.  Once one has the GNU/Windows environment set up the compilation actually goes quite well. Compiling the Windows executables on GNU/Linux seems to me a far simpler way to go.

I thought my paper wallet was safe but I had no idea what happens to thermal printing when left in the car on a hot summer day.

That's why XMR is going up now. So many lost coins!

And even ssd's in the car in the summer.....

Hi friends!

Can somebody say whether there is progress in Monero development last few months or no?

I've visited poloniex today, Etherium is raising in volume... The life is boiling... And here?

There has been phenomenal progress including the database, but this has not been tagged yet. The latest "official" binaries are from 8 months ago and require around 7 GB of RAM to run while the latest code compiled from https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero requires around 50 MB. In order to see this progress one must compile from source.

LOL, Dash shuts up Monero trolls with releases and new things all the time. At dash's side our developers actually doing some crypto  coding, while Monero do what they do best cry*p*to about it here on forums LOOOOOL

A lot of people, and not just some Dashers, are going to get caught by surprise if they assume that Monero development is measured by the over 8 month old "official" binaries. Monero is being very actively developed right now. The real action is going on GitHub https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero and one needs to compile the code to see what is really going on. In the meantime those who have chosen to bet against Monero can live in a false sense of security by focusing only on the "official" binaries.

XMR Monero
1448  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Good Alts? on: August 17, 2015, 12:34:54 AM
If one is looking for a sleeper then Monero. Monero is being very actively developed as per the Git master https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero while the official tagged binaries are over eight months old! https://getmonero.org/downloads/

Here is what I suggest:
1) Download and compile the latest source
2) Download the "official" binaries
3) Benchmark 1 vs 2. The RAM needed to run a node with the "official" binaries is around 7 GB vs around 50.5 MB for the latest compiled source, just for starters.
1449  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: #Blocksize Survey on: August 16, 2015, 10:48:03 PM
...

Then the answer is to run Bitcoin XT with just the large blocks fork and without the additional items such as the double transactions propagation, lighting network Lighthouse compatibility etc. In short let us focus this debate on the blocksize issue and not allow it to be distracted by this additional baggage.

Edit: Replaced "lighting network" with Lighthouse since I confused them. This furthers my point  that adding extraneous baggage in Bitcoin XT to the blocksize debate does not help at all.

Devs, I can wait for the new tagged release.
...

... but the GNU/Linux nerds who compile their own executables want to keep buying cheap moneroj from those who run Microsoft Windows and use 8 month old tagged executables.  Wink
1451  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Who wants to fork ethereum? on: August 10, 2015, 03:06:18 AM
You are forgetting for starters about regulatory risk a la Ripple on each of your pre mined forks. It works out at 750,000 USD per fork for the Ripple Labs US Government agreement. That is just one regulator there are many more around the world. This can get very expensive very fast.

от регуляторов отлично спасают анонимайзеры - давно проверенный вариант Wink

A much better solution is to not have a premine
1) Regulators leave you alone
2) The Anonymity without a premine then becomes very strong, An anonymous coin with a substantial premine can be trivial for a regulator to break wide open. The regulators first find the holders of the premine. All the regulators then need to do is apply rubber hose cryptoanalysis to the holders of the premine.
1452  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: August 10, 2015, 01:48:41 AM
Monero still needs more volume... Bytecoin has more

You are kidding right? Over 100,000 USD volume for XMR vs below 24,000 USD volume for BCN
1453  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Who wants to fork ethereum? on: August 10, 2015, 01:38:23 AM
Just as bytecoin was horribly premined and resulted in monero fork so should we the crypto community fork ethereum .

premine разве является проблемой? Wink

The critical difference here is that the Australian comments come from the Australian senate. It is indicative of the need to change laws to reflect the reality of crypto currency. In particular in the Australian case coming to its senses regarding the GST, before Bitcoin is used a way to legally avoid the GST. The Japanese case is a Judge's interpretation of current Japanese law, Big difference.

Besides the fact that you are most likely planning to sell .003-.004, if everyone had their XMR stored in cold storage, it's not a currency. If you ask Fluffy about what he sees as the future, it's in transactional value and shouldn't be treated as a speculative investment. It very well could be a store of value but to get there almost certainly needs an economy behind it (people willing to buy and sell XMR for goods and services). There needs to be utility and that's not something you're magically going to get if everyone cold-stores coins.

No one is going to sink a million dollars into accumulating coins if there is no means of actually getting out when they need to. You're also assuming that no one is willing to part with coins along the way, even with the price sitting that high. You can bet your sweet ass there will be substantial supply available should XMR even reach levels greater than $100--hell, at this point, there most certainly would be supply available above $5-$10. If it pulls a bitcoin in terms of the size move it makes, there will be plenty willing to take profits on 10x their return knowing that the future is unknown and the gain is already better than anything you are going to get elsewhere. It doesn't mean there won't be those that continue to hold, no different than the select few that held BTC all the way to >$1000.

Further, until a coin actually makes it to the number 2 position, it's super foolish to even discuss valuations like $2k/coin.

These are some very valid points. The value of a crypto currency and this includes Monero lies in its use as a transactional currency. Those who invest or speculate are in effect betting its future value as a transactional currency; they are however important to the success of a crypto currency since they help bootstrap the currency. As for holding on until 1000 USD or what ever smart investors are likely to sell a portion at lower prices while keeping a portion for a future "run" in effect hedging their position.

Predictions on how long it will take to pass Ripple ?

How about predictions on how long it will take to fall below Dash? Ethereum is falling hard on strong volume.

The tail emission in Monero makes it mathematically impossible for Monero to be x% mined in y years..
