741  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2015-06-04] University Students Find Bitcoin Too Volatile To Use on: June 04, 2015, 11:36:08 PM
they should be able to get around the volatility by using BitPay or whatever service instantly converts BTC/CAD at point of sale. They can even do it manually using Preev or any of the other live BTC price monitors... the problem with BTC is; why bother? cash is still the easiest fastest way to purchase goods, why go through all the steps of buying BTC, converting price, spending btc?
this is basically what holds people back from getting on board with btc. Its simply too much bother.
shopping online with coins one has held since before 2013, or moving funds across international boarders is another story, but retail BTC usage has a loooooooooooong way to go.
742  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What will happen to Bitcoin year after 2140 ? on: June 04, 2015, 09:55:00 PM
after 2140 BTC will;
- be accepted at about 30 000 businesses world wide.
- suffer from bad reputation as the preferred form of payment by pedophiles and drug dealers.
- be worth almost 300$ USD each
- be hoarded but never spent by 99% of users.
743  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Great North Data. Anyone familiar with them?? on: June 04, 2015, 09:43:20 PM
Sounds like how we Americans feel about California... Tongue

Thanks for all the info btw.  That VAT looks like a steep cost to consider.

its more like small town Florida. With shittier weather, weirder accents and more poverty.
744  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: ASICminer & FriedCat - what to do on: June 04, 2015, 09:41:18 PM
was this a case of fraud like BFL or did they simply go bankrupt?

they failed with their last gen of asic chip, but instead of owning up and dissolving the company, the principal (Fried Cat AKA Xinyu Jiang AKA Della Lu) simply disappeared with ~80K of company btc. embezzlement is what you'd call it technically.

there's zero hope of getting a satoshi back, I'd just like to see Fried Cat get punished. I do not speak chinese and have no idea how to navigate the chinese legal system... I'm guessing I would talk to the embassy? If no one speaks up, which I assume is happening due to silence on the threads, these guys walk scott free. I want to turn up the heat any way I can.
745  Bitcoin / Legal / ASICminer & FriedCat - what to do on: June 04, 2015, 05:53:58 AM
I lost a chunk of change in the form of my shares of asicminer going bust. I realize I will probably never see a satoshi from these assholes, but I still feel that they should be punished. What could a north american do to bring retribution on these chinese nationals? does anyone have any leads on where I can make a formal legal complaint? I do not speak chinese, but i would love to let the chinese authorities know about their corrupt citizen and let them exact revenge for me.

any realistic and low cost solutions appreciated, I will follow up on any realistic suggestions.
746  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Ledger Wallet - Smartcard security for your bitcoins on: June 04, 2015, 01:01:12 AM
I've got a problem with this update. the first thing it asks for is "32 digit code from security card" nowhere on my security card is any 32 digit code. the security card (the plastic card) is just a legend af a upper and lower case alphabets and digits 0-9 all with corresponding numbers or digits. there is no 32 digit code. what is going on. I do not wish to begin the update progress because ledger tells me it will delete wallet. I do have my 24 word recover mnemonic, and my 4 digit entry code, when i open my wallet all my btc are intact. WTF is this mysterious 32 digit recovery code and where the hell is it located?
747  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Great North Data. Anyone familiar with them?? on: June 03, 2015, 10:07:08 PM
Its in Newfoundland Canada, so yes, there is PST and GST which are like VAT at both provincial and federal levels. usually works out to a 14% add on. If you are a Canadian there are ways to write it off on your tax claim, but that would be very specific to your case. usually you just have to pay it....

The other thing about this company, that is more my opinion than anything provable by fact, is, I have never trusted any company from my country that uses the terms "Great White" "Great Northern" or "Great Canadian" in their title. Every single professional service that I have ever dealt with that hides behind this sort of entry level nationalism and cheap flag waving has proven to be bullshit. that's been my experience, there may be exceptions, but flag waving and thumping chest whilst shouting "Canada Number ONE!" just screams bullshit smoke n mirrors to me. Canadians have the unfortunate habit of thinking they are better than everybody else whilst being mostly below average, boring, small-minded and weak. be careful, Canadians are the worst sort of bullshitters, they are bullshitters who are convinced they are righteous honest and correct.

of course, this company is in Newfoundland, so technically, they aren't even Canadians, they're more like mutant donkey versions of newly landed immigrants. sub-normal at best.
748  Economy / Service Discussion / What's Going On at CaVirTex??? on: June 03, 2015, 09:55:44 PM
As a Canadian citizen, my only viable choice for purchasing BTC from an exchange seems to be Cavirtex. They have high fees but still offer btc cheaper than the others (including localbtc)

I still worry that they are small enough and amateurish enough that they would be a prime target for hackers and thieves, i feel it is only a matter of time before we hear "Cavirtex hacked, all de coins be goned! sorry guise!"

I use cavirtex with caution, and try to get in and out real fast, seems to work ok....UNTIL TODAY

bought ~ a btc then COULD NOT WITHDRAW....WITHDRAWALS DISABLED! after following some confusing instructions to add a default withdrawal addy and email them confirmation I sit and wait. This is bullshit for a few reasons. ONE: why so easy to add default addy? no 2fauth... there should be, there should be 2fauth at every action...these guys want to get robbed methinks.

TWO: why do I only find out withdrawals are a problem when I try to withdraw?Huh?? this should be in a bold banner on every page, even before you log in. Something is fishy.

I haven't given up hope, I will get my btc out, but i may not use the cavirtex exchange ever again.

clean up yr act cavirtex, this aint kindergarten
749  Other / Meta / Re: Why is my Account Banned? on: June 03, 2015, 07:54:11 PM
"Responding to self using alts"

I can't believe you do that then have a the nerve to question your ban. You know, I worry every time I post that I'm treading thin ice, sig campaign and all. I read all the subs looking for something I can add constructively to, then I see the most flagrant and obvious offenders crying blue murder when they're banned...
I'd hate to be a mod...
750  Other / Meta / Re: Amph, the useless user! on: June 03, 2015, 07:30:19 PM
Annoying and stupid yes, and as useless as amph's posts may be I don't think he qualifies as a spammer (according to rules and mods)
This whole argument is like censorship arguments. Ban amph's and mods would rightfully need to ban all sorts of not-scintillating users. There can be no rules regarding intellectual depth on a public forum, because... autistic bitcoiners need bitcointalk too you know.
Also, eliminating sig campaigns won't happen. Even some mods participate, plenty users manage to post decent content and meet sig obligations. They don't put shit posts, you would be punishing them along with amph.
Also, the forum runs ads at the top of each page. Might be interpreted as hypocritical if the sigs vanish.

Obviously the mods have already made their decisions. I suggest to all users offended by dumb posts and sig ads that they disable ads in you account settings and place serial shit posters on ignore. Only problem with that is you'll see page after page of "this user is ignored" and nothing else

It's a tough one. Capitalist freedom or intellectual elitism....
751  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: News of Bitcoin’s death is greatly exaggerated on: June 03, 2015, 06:25:11 AM
I don't see the FUD in OP? The article is optimistic, overly so even.
I'm more in line with mike Hearn when he says that the banks will look at the blockchain, but lose interest when they see how specific it is to Bitcoin. That is FUD, but legitimate FUD IMO
752  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2015-06-02] CD: BitFury to Release Light Bulbs that Mine Bitcoin in 2015 on: June 03, 2015, 06:08:29 AM
I'm guessing it doesn't hash very fast, but if they can make the lightbulb last a really long time that might be ok. The original lightbulb Edison made still works, was designed to never burn out...
Anyways... Looks like this is going to be more novelty than anything. Unless huge industries decide to go all in. Light all their facilities with it. They might make a few btc.
It will be interesting to see how efficient these guys are.

754  Other / MultiBit / Multibit and the fork to XT on: June 02, 2015, 01:15:24 AM
Will the fork to 20mB Bitcoin XT affect multibit? As multibit is my primary hot wallet is there anything I should be concerned about? Not interested in opinions about the fork, just the end user realities.
Any thing I should know?
755  Economy / Securities / Re: ASICMINER: Entering the Future of ASIC Mining by Inventing It on: May 29, 2015, 10:16:07 PM
Did you guys take a class action or something?
Sure, against that chinese guy whom we know from the bitcointalk forum and we even got a bad photo of him. Wink

It would be the only course of action.
I lost money but not enough to afford a private eye to find FC, lawyers on retainer, and expect to actually get very little back. Victims of fraud and embezzlement rarely see any of their money back. It would simply be about vengeance.
If these guys were in USA we would have different options. There are gov bodies that oversee bring these type douche bags to justice at no cost, but the money's still long gone. Hidden. Moved off shore. I still want to report Jiang Xiu or w/ev his actual name is to Chinese police. Maybe they might catch him crossing a boarder and throw him in Chinese concentration camp or better yet, shoot him
756  Economy / Securities / Re: ASICMINER: Entering the Future of ASIC Mining by Inventing It on: May 29, 2015, 08:51:12 AM
meh, what? Rental Starter? the returns are so negligible, and its only a matter of time, when you need your funds most, the w/ever exchange the shares sit on will suddenly go offline, or just cut n run... its too wild-west-infested-with-sharks in this game. I believe these offerings will go down one by one, "unforeseen circumstances" one and all, until there is nothing left. only a matter of time.
If you playing your cards right, you've already cashed out of anything that was once viable. there's nothing left.

abandon all hope!
757  Economy / Securities / Re: ASICMINER: Entering the Future of ASIC Mining by Inventing It on: May 28, 2015, 09:22:51 PM
No, this AM fiasco has been the final straw on the camel's back. Absolutely Give Up. It's over. There will never be anything in this sphere that earns a satoshi. Every last security will lose you money. They should move this entire sub in with the "investor based games" and "faucets" strictly for suckers. The best that could happen re; AM and FC? ... Cancer!

759  Other / MultiBit / Re: Problems with signing messages Multibit on: May 27, 2015, 06:27:56 AM
the problem im having is not in the signing of the message. The problem is i cannot copy/paste anything into or out of multibit. it wont allow me to use the copy/paste function anywhere on the signing interface. it is not a problem in other functions of the same multibit wallet. I can copy in the send windows the receive windows, even the transactions windows...it wont let me copy/paste in the signing windows.

It seems weird to me, its where it is most needed. maybe its a bug?

im using version 0.5.18

nevermind, it works if i use ctrl-v...  Tongue
760  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BITCOIN SECURITY PRIMER on: May 26, 2015, 11:16:24 PM
I figure it would be organized by "layers"

the top layer being no-brainer, common sense stuff good to protect total tech n00bz; browsing safety, storage safety, avoiding scams phishing etc.

the next layer is more techy, things like the vulnerability of various browsers and java etc, getting into ideas like owning a dedicated non browsing comp, and using VPNs and VMs, encrypting files etc.

the third layer would be more advanced; using linux, knowledge for identifying root-kits and cleaning infected machines...

think of a book with three sections; Easy, Medium, and Difficult

then make point form knowledge bases (chapters) for each section

sprinkle with lots of illustrations and a few jokes

market the sucker as an e-book, or take to a publishing house.

Huh?

PROFIT
