I had totally missed this new(?) feature in 2.9... I thought adding in custom "Derivation Path" values was the best new feature... but this is pretty awesome too! It should make it stupidly easy for MultiSig folks to be able to get their redeem scripts/private keys and sign messages as required for Lumens et al.

NOTE: You appear to have skipped step 6.2 where you extract the hash from the wallet...

If you use your seed to restore to a BCC wallet that supports a Derivation Path of m/0' then you should be able to access the BCC. I would "guess" that the only BCC wallet capable of this at the present time is "Electron Cash"... and only the desktop versions, as the Android APK is only at version 2.8.2 (so doesn't have the derivation path patch that 2.9.0 has)

NOTE: "Electron Cash" is currently an 'unproven' wallet at best... it seems to be a direct fork of Electrum... and is open source... but it is NOT developed or endorsed by the Electrum dev ThomasV... it will also, by default, attempt to copy your Electrum wallet file(s) over to the Electron Cash directory... and the binaries are signed by an "anonymous" developer.

Running from the sources is possible and is probably the safest option for now... if you choose to use it... as is following ThomasV's advice of creating a new wallet, sending all your BTC there... then use the old seed to import to BCC wallet. That way, only your BCC is at risk if the BCC wallet you choose to use is "bad"™

a bitcoin address is a bitcoin address... SegWit has nothing to do with Addresses... BCC is essentially a different network using the same "basics" as BTC, so the addresses/keys remain the same (hence why everyone magically gets BCC at a 1:1 ratio if they had BTC in a given address at block #478558)

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "When you send BTC to a pre AUG 1 BTC addresses"? You transfer control of coins from one BTC address (private key) to another BTC address (private key)... that doesn't change because someone created an Altcoin using the BTC blockchain history...

Did you try looking in the settings? Specifically: "Tools -> Preferences -> Appearance" You'll want to change the Base Unit to BTC

Using Electrum with the Nano S should work OK... create a new wallet and select the "use a hardware device" option... That should create a "watching-only" wallet using the Master Public Key from the Nano S. You should theoretically be able to select the address you want to sign a message from and away you go.

Some users reported success with running it on Ubuntu and installing the websocket package manually... You might be able to so something similar on Windows if you run from sources after manually installing the websocket patch.

The only other alternative I can think of is to extract the private key from the ledger and sign the message "manually"... there are plenty of "offline" versions of webpages that allow you to do this... or you could import the private key to an Electrum wallet and do it that way.

If you're worried, try using a Linux Live CD... with no persistent storage and no networking functionality built in/switched on.

If you boot into that OS and do the decryption and then reboot, all traces should be gone... and the viable attack vectors or chances for data leakage are minimised.

For now, I would advise that you just leave the coins where they are until things settle down... MBC is not an HD wallet and just uses private keys... so you don't need to worry, you'll be able to access them via sweeping/importing your private keys.

You can try and create a new Electrum seed based (HD) wallet... and then sweep the coins, but to be honest, I'd just wait. It is probably not a good time to be making transactions... even though you have about 10 hours before the BCC Hard fork happens.

Your other option is to import the keys into a non-HD Electrum wallet. Importing is instant and doesn't require any transactions to be created or broadcast... but you don't have the safety of an HD seed based wallet for backup purposes. The only advantage to doing this as opposed to leaving coins in MBC is that Electrum has a better fee system, so any transactions you create later are less likely to get stuck due to low fees.


TLDR; Leave your coins where they are until things calm down, then sweep into Electrum seed based wallet

No... ThomasV put support in Electrum for multiple forks... but BCC devs put replay protection in BCC network that effectively makes it IMPOSSIBLE to generate a transaction in Electrum that will broadcast on BCC network. The transactions need to be made in a different way. ThomasV does not want to include BCC funtionality in Electrum: https://electrum.org/bcc.txt

There is no chance that your BTC will be stuck in Electrum. It will continue to operate properly with BTC.

If you want to get BCC, you need to get a BCC wallet and use your seed/private keys there... but I would suggest you follow ThomasV's suggestion and move all your BTC to a new seed/private keys first, and use your OLD seed/private keys in BCC wallet (just in case BCC wallet is "bad"™ and tries to steal your seed/private keys): https://electrum.org/bcc2.txt

It sounds like you have used Electrum in the past and created a 2FA wallet previously. When you reinstalled Electrum, it would have found the old wallet (uninstalling Electrum doesn't remove the data directory containing wallets) and used that old wallet by default without asking you to generate a new one.

In any case, as Abdussamad has already said, without the seed or the Google Authenticator "secret" for this wallet, your coins are lost.

Just FYI, Electrum 2.9.0 portable on windows does the same thing... I have it installed on a usb thumb drive that has an activity LED... while Electrum 2.9.0 is open... that light blinks continuously until I shut Electrum down... that is just with the wallet open and sitting there. Resource Monitor indicates it is "writing" the "electrum_data\config" file

Opening that file in Notepad++ while Electrum is open... I get constant warnings that the file has been modified and would I like to re-open it. The file contents is actually unchanged.

If you didn't see this window... were you offline when you generated your wallet? You need to be online so the wallet can connect to TrustedCoin to setup the account and generate the Google Authenticator code...

Are you saying that you checked the "extend seed with custom words" option? If so, you DON'T type those extra words into the seed window... you just enter the 12 word seed and click next... Electrum will then prompt you for the extra words:







If you have only entered 12 words, and the "next" button is still greyed out, then you have entered at least one of the 12 words incorrectly. Double check the spelling of your words. There are some words that are, unfortunately, quite similar... and it is easy to either write it down wrong, or type it in wrong... words like kid, kit, kite, kind etc... they all only need 1 letter missing or incorrect and your seed is wrong.

So ONE detection (by an AntiVirus app that I've never heard of... 9th result on google for WhiteArmor Antivirus??!?) while 61 others come up clean = "definitely"?

Don't get me wrong... I'm not endorsing nor claiming that this software is legit... but it may not be time for the torches and pitchforks just yet...
