I really doubt Dortmund's consistency this season and also their strength is not that strong compared to last season, especially as Leipzig, Leverkusen and Bayern Munich have more strength than them so it is possible that Dortmund will not be able to finish above them.

Have problem for Dortmund can't return with top performance and left 6 points behind Leipzig on the fourth position standings. Dortmund performance in this season not promising yet and out from top fourth standings much problem for them how to get Champion League ticket next although their performance in Champion League most impressive get qualify to next round.
Dortmund have several easily matches after Bundesliga resume on middle January, if can take three points will not close for raising Champion League spot standings but depend on top fourth teams on impressive perform or not.

I really doubt Dortmund's consistency this season and also their strength is not that strong compared to last season, especially as Leipzig, Leverkusen and Bayern Munich have more strength than them so it is possible that Dortmund will not be able to finish above them.
For this season, I am sure that only Bayern and Leverkusen will compete fiercely in the fight for the Bundeliga title until the end of the season.

Union Berlin last season were testifyingly better than they are now. They were threatening and even at the earliest part of this season, they still had that tempo high. Weeks ago, they hosted Madrid and they were able to prove their toughness too but it didn't really get them anywhere higher. Their UCL journey was quite worthwhile for them no doubt and even if they didn't really win all of their encounters, they managed to make an impactful performance in every game.

 Now they'd be onto the domestic league race and on the standings, they're just a point out of the relegation zone and they've got work to do in ensuring that they don't decline in performance or points too. They'll be facing Freiburg away from home, according to records, both teams are more or less on thesame range with the fact of being big team defeaters in past times even though Freiburg currently are higher chances to winning the game. Although Freiburg are the host and so they've got the upper hand, but we hope to see the outcome of the game.

But that does not eliminate the fact that they are still very weak in defense and in domestic competitions when 15 matches this season are passed and only get 4 win 1 draw and 10 defeat  make us know how weak they are now because the consistency is not going well.

Union fast-paced attacking scheme  has not changed, but the difference is that they are not able to finish well and the defense is still very poor because their focus is only on attacking makes it a little difficult for Union Berlin.

Now the match is still quite long because there is at least about 1 week more for them to prepare this well so that their performance against Freiburg which can be said to be a little better for them at this time runs smoothly especially Union focus is now only one, namely the Bundesliga so there is no reason to All out and get out of the zone that is not too comfortable in the standings.

I thought this season they would perform even better than all these seasons and will be potentially fighting for the trophy. But I certainly agree with the problems you have said. They have problems with their tactics. After football is not a game of chance but a game of tactics and execution. They need improvement in attack, especially finishing and they definitely need improvement in their defense as well. The January transfer market is coming up and I hope they can change the fate of their team with that.

It was mostly disappointing what they have showed the last weeks in the German League and for that Darmstadt can be struggle them maybe.

An interesting match after this break is the match between Freiburg vs Union Berlin. I must say that this season both Freiburg and Union Berlin are in decline, but Union Berlin is in a much worse decline than Freiburg. In the last 5 matches played by Union Berlin they could only record 2 wins, and the rest ended in disappointment, 2 defeats and 1 draw and made their position in 15th place, only one level at the safety zone limit.
Freiburg themselves are actually residents in the European zone zone, but now they are ranked 8th in the standings.
