Gone are the days when slam dunk contests have always been the most awaited thing during the all star weekend. It's really far from the usual and exciting slam dunk contest that we've watched and waited in the past years. Maybe they'll do better next year. But still, I have to congrulate Obi Toppin on his win.
It's gone because of social media and lots of street dunkers uploading their videos that make the dunks in the NBA looks childish. Though you cannot compare the two because those dunks on the streets took many attempts to be perfected but they uploaded their perfect dunks which makes the NBA slamdunk contest uninteresting to watch. nevertheless, the selected players have done their best this year, and look like they gonna changed the mechanics this year with this result. They should. Something new. Something "in". I was not entertained at all with the dunks unlike when Zach Lavine does it and of course Aaron Gordon. That's one of the best head-to-head Slam Dunk contests that I have seen and I am grateful I witnessed it. Maybe changing it to a team might make it better like what they did with the skill competition which also relies on teamwork and chemistry. Team Cavaliers did great there, especially the passing skills where they are surprisingly in good sync.

Unpopular Opinion. I really dislike the breaks in all the competitions, in all the sports i was talking. And this its not the exception, i like to see the show in the NBA all Stars but i want to keep playing the games of regular season also. In other things Team Lebron in names its over the Team Durant by far.
I hate the new system in the all-star game and yet everyone seems to be enjoying it so I just go along with it. The 12 minute 4 quarters just like a regular game was a great thing and I loved it. In fact, I loved it aaaaall the way back when players played with their teams jerseys instead of a team as well. For the past few years everything changed so much, from no more east vs west to captains picking to weird clock situation and many other silly stuff. It was already good, maybe it was "boring" but that was mainly due to players not caring about it, back in the day players cared about it and tried to win, nowadays you have Curry laying down on the floor as a joke when he sees Giannis coming, and doing it as "entertainment" and instead making it more boring. Same here, for me the old format is better as there's no draft happening, it's just simply the east vs the west. I don't know why they changed it, maybe because the West are dominating in the past, but now, the East already have strong teams so it's good to bring back the old format. I would gladly watch if this year's all star game was the old good format, but instead they continue this new format that a captain is picked both sides and then will try to build a super team. Yes at first, it was kind of nice because we get to see something for a change about the all star weekend but later on, everything gets so boring, including this years SlamDunk contest. It would be really nice to see East vs West again though.

My picks are here: Slam Dunk Contest Winner: Jalen Green 3 Points Contest Winner: Fred VanVleet All-Star Game Winner: Team LeBron
These are the common bets that almost everyone has placed, well except for the 3-points contest because others had bet on Trae Young, including me. Aside from that, I think that lots have also lost their bet on Slam Dunk and 3-Point contest. And for the main event which is the All-Star game, of course many have betted in favor to Team LeBron but the Team Durant rosters are quite talented too and young, so this will be interesting.

I do not remember ANY dunk contest that was as horrible as this one. I mean not only they ended up failing so much but the ones they achieved were last second "might as well dunk something" results and that was horrible. I am old enough to remember Vince Carter era and think about how many great ones we have watched ever since those days.
I have to say the last great one was the duel between Aaron Gordon and Lavine and that was about 5 or even more years ago, and ever since that, I do not think that there has been anything good. It is doable and understandable but I still feel like it is going to be hard for dunk contest to be great unless they offer something big and try to get even better dunkers and better names.

Let us see the real format, the good old East vs West, and feel like a real all star game again. Of course this game is entertaining but it just doesn't feel like a real all star game to me. It feels like a very high quality charity game somehow. I would really like to see the old format, which is much better for betting too. The voting is better also. NBA is not helping its popularity with this. It is just wrong marketing.

In a seven gane series I really can't see anyone beating them in the West.
Does it mean that Eastern Conference has a deeper lineup compared to those at the West wherein you already put the Phoenix Suns as the team to beat or should I say, no team can beat them in Sever-game series? I might agree with you if we are just sharing speculations but maybe there will be an unexpected team in the West that will surprise us once the playoffs come like last playoffs where no one, or only a few, expected that Bucks and Suns will meet at the Finals. I'm not saying they can't be beat but for sure the Suns are the team to beat in the West. And yes this year the East is deeper in terms of team talent. The mid to back end of the west is terrible. Bucks could certainly take them again but I'm banking on the Suns being there. Chris Paul is playing too good. Just hope this finger injury isn't a nagging one for him.

In the All-Star events last night, the dunk contest wasn't very impressive actually. Toppin won the contest very easily as the other candidates weren't that much effective. Especially one of Toppin's dunks was really delightful to watch. Congrats to him on his prize! And the 3-pointer contest was much more exciting than this. Karl-Anthony Towns was the best by making it to 29 points. The closest rivals stayed at 26 the most and Towns won the prize. And tonight, it is time for the big All-Star game!

There just isn’t enough incentive for the players to do the dunk contest anymore and most of the big names have endorsement contracts that don’t let them participate in events like this due to the possible risk of injury. A shame… That’s why they wouldn’t let LeBron do it. Team LeBron sporting a 5.5 point spread over Team Durant. I think they’ll probably win by more than that but they might keep it close for entertainment’s sake.

This year's Slam dunk contest sucks and it's probably the worst in years.
Yeah, I also think that this Slam Dunk contest was the worst in the history of the NBA. I briefly watched the highlights, and it looks like the participants had a lot of failed attempts, and almost all the dunks were of the same type. I mean, a windmill dunk or a between the legs dunk don't surprise fans anymore. As a result, none of the participants received 50 points from the judges. To be fair, it's getting harder for this new guys to be creative. Other than the numerous failed attempts, the problem is it looked like some players did not even try to increase the difficulty of their dunks. Never mind if they copy some previously done dunks with a little twist but they shouldn't have gone there thinking of dunks seen on regular games. Toppin's backboard first dunk was fine though. By the way, Shaq's reaction says it all. Can't blame him. He's seen a lot of great dunks before.

Funny but there's a serious thing that the organizers and participants has to take. It's a face of disappointment and expectations. Shaq probably have expected the best of the best and great dunks but it's not what he's expecting. He can't do anything with that and the contests had shown that it's not what he's expecting to happen. Well, he's a legend and a great dunker as well but many none of them passed on his standards.

I think that they should honestly come up with some better formats than the dunk contest.
For starters, have a 1-1 contest. This should get people fired up. And don't just get random people, actually get stars to compete for a prize.
Even the 3-point contest needs to be scrapped in my opinion. Given how much people shoot 3-pointers these days, these things are like layups, and the scores are simply going to go higher and higher.

Yeah it was meh. It lacked the surprise or wow factor. Obi has hops and can get up with the best of them but the creativity was just meh. Need Aaron Gordon, lavine, etc back in the mix. This new group of ballers is more about 3pt shooting then mixing it up in the middle of the paint.

Congratulations for Obi. Many would not be amazed with his dunks as they look simple and normal. But I agree that they're really delighting as I'm watching those dunks that he has made. It's not the same with the past dunk contests held yearly in the past. The blast is different and it's understandable that many doesn't see it as good as the others in the past.

Technically, if we looked at the Western Conference current competition, Phoenix Suns are really the team to beat to consider. Those teams sitting from 3rd spot are somehow new to the vocabulary. Let's see if one of those West teams can give an headache and tough road for the Phoenix Suns to reach the Finals. Don't expect too much entertainment from the Slam Dunk contest to the point that all dunks will be good. Of course, I'm enjoying it but not on the highest level. No doubt that the majority of Dunk Contest is crap, as even considered by others, not until the like of Lavine, Gordon put up a great show.
I am right lol.

Maybe since almost all dunks styles are now performed and shown in the history of the NBA All-Star Dunk contest, participants are having a difficult time thinking of something new. Maybe we have to wait again before there will be the likes of Lavine and Gordon to participate. It took over a decade from the Vince Carter championship to Lavine's first Dunk championship. But if some people here are watching dunk contest outside NBA, you can see them creative and really awesome. Why NBA players can't do that?

In the All-Star events last night, the dunk contest wasn't very impressive actually. Toppin won the contest very easily as the other candidates weren't that much effective. Especially one of Toppin's dunks was really delightful to watch. Congrats to him on his prize! And the 3-pointer contest was much more exciting than this. Karl-Anthony Towns was the best by making it to 29 points. The closest rivals stayed at 26 the most and Towns won the prize. And tonight, it is time for the big All-Star game!
Crowd is there for sure, but as far as creativity, just a so-so dunk contest for me. Not sure if the players in this contest has prepared or what but we need to have a winner so it is Obi for this year. And Jalen was a bit disappointment, I thought we will see some new dunks from him. But he looks like he is not into this contest and just trying to go with the motions.

Even in the recent years yeah most of the dunks have been done before, this dunk contest some of the players needed 20 minutes to lay down their dunk. There was no flow and the audience was lulled to sleep. There was no drama in the final since Juan missed his dunk after 3 times and everyone knew obi already won it before his final dunk. Nba needs to change this up before it goes stale

I also eyeing for Green thinking that he will bring some good hypes for his name. Being a rookie and gaining good numbers of believers, he should bring the best in him. Moving to the final 2, Escano just tried to duplicate past dunk from Carter and Richardson but both were a failed attempt, just my opinion, the judges should give that opportunity to green and let him advance to the finals, we never know what he will do if in somehow he was competing for the final slot. Just saying!

Just saying! They can't just put someone in the final just because because. His first round was terrible. How could they put him in front of Juan with the way the first round went for jalen. A lot of people thought he would do great but after watching I don't think a dunk competition format is his thing.
