Hi all,

I'm pretty new to bitcoins and my main focus is on mining! I'm not really out to make cash or anything I just like to tinker with computers, and mining looks like a fun way to do it  

I'm currently mining on a single 5850 which I set up over the weekend (and have made 0.25 BTC so far, w00t). I overclokced it a bit and managed to get 310 MHash/sec pretty easily. From my brief readings it looks like significant performace gains can be got from underclocking your GPU. Not really sure why this is but hopefully some of you guys can help me out with that.

Seems awfully counter-intuitive seeing as I've been a member of other forums for years without even achieving that many posts. It sure seems like your trying to encourage spam posts such as:

If you under clock your video RAM you'll see improvements using a worksize of 256 in my experience.

My settings:
GPU: 1065 MHz
RAM: 300 MHz
VCC: 1.11

phoenix.py -k phatk VECTORS BFI_INT FASTLOOP=false AGGRESSION=12 WORKSIZE=256

Yeilds me 235 Mh/s on a Radeon HD 5770

That's 235 Mh/s for $90 @ 108W, this is a good speed for my card (5770).

According to https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison you should be able to achieve around 392 Mh/s with the proper settings on a 5850.

If you're running linux, check out AMDOverdriveCtrl project on sourceforge, it allows you to underclock and such.

Really wish I would have gotten into this earlier! I sold my 5870 for 314 on ebay and purchased a 6970 on newegg for 309(after rebates) I didn't plan on mining with the 6970 but was trying to cash in on bitcoin by selling the 5870 for much more than it's worth. Decided to give mining a try for a couple of days and now I'm hooked. Purchased a second 6970 and hoping I can make enough bitcoin to pay it off. Currently hashing at ~700 mh/s going to deepbit.

Hey, all! I've been lurking for a few days. Finally went to post, and spent the better part of 5 minutes trying to find the reply button! Finally got myself all sorted out, and I figured I better start posting in the 'noob' section and get it out of the way.

Sounds like a very interesting community, so far. I originally heard about Bitcoin a few years ago, was intrigued by it from a technical perspective, but I figured it would never fly. Recently I've been following the whole MtGox debacle, and I finding that the Bitcoin market is quite fascinating and already surprisingly well established.

It seems a lot of people feel that the recent events have tarnished the reputation of Bitcoins in general. On the contrary, it has definitely led me to research the currency more than I think I would have. I won't be opening an MtGox account anytime soon, but I am definitely going to get more involved in the Bitcoin market.

I'm also a software developer, so it's exciting to see all the 3rd-party code that has sprung up, and I'm excited to learn more about the ecosystem of websites and tools out there.

Anyways, that's my 0.02 BTC.

Hi, although I installed bitcoin a year ago its just been one of those things I run, having never generated a block, until I started reading these boards again a few days ago. Now I'm putting my 6850 to good use.
Sadly I think I've come back and switched to GPU hashing just at the point where I dont think I'll be any luckier generating a block
