Guys, do you think it's okay to use my somewhat-ancient computer to mine for Bitcoins? It's got hardware that was great a few years ago, and an Nvidia graphics card... Might it work?
Not in a long shot. First of, don't use nVidia but ATI(AMD) graphic cards. You will pay more for the electricity (depending where you live, it's almost true for any country) than you will earn bitcoins.

Just discovered bitcoin, a bit obsessed!
but I've already learned: mining isn't for me. My slow little laptop can't do much, and I can't get any of those mining programs to work for me. BCP was fun for a minute...till I learned about the hidden fees!

But you still can run some services or do something that can help bitcoin grow. Yeah I'm still learning about that. Until then, some shameless self promotion: http://www.freebitcoins.org/6509I've already earned 0.2 BTC there! sign up with the link above

Go ahead and start mining with that... get into one of the pools, figure out how it all works now before you go out and spend some real money on some ATI 5830's or whatever you can find that works well and you're comfortable paying for. Use this chart to help you pick the best card for you https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparisonAnd yeah.. you're not going to want to bother with CPU mining or nvidia mining longterm.. but nothing wrong with trying it out for a couple hours to get the hang of how everything works. Welcome to the fold! -lowlevel

Hi I am Evil Bob! You can call me Evil Bob, Evil, or Bob, My wife calls me an A$$ and I take it to be a compliment sort of a synonym to Evil. You guys don't get that privilege though. As for Bitcoining I love the Mining! I am a systems admin so I use some lab machines to mine, Also working on a grant to get a GPU based supercomputer you better believe it will be benchmarked in Mh/s. That being said I don't care so much about the economy or making money, I just want to process math really fast and have massive amounts of uptime. Hardware tweaking, rigging, and modification are my passions. Honestly I thought I was the Batman, Glad I can stop now as there are plenty of others. Btw I can't spell and after 4 years of college grammar still eludes me. If it bothers you try not to read my posts Evil Bob - out!

I'm not really sure mate, since the information you have provided isn't sufficient, but I suggest you give it a try.

Hello. Time to come out of the lurking cave. I guess the newbie limit is for getting used to the sun again? I'm some kid in Nevada that's been interested in all this business. No worries though I'm not a subscription bumping zealot.
