I do have more than 5 posts (and spent waaay more than 4 hours reading here) but I still cannot reply to this thread. Why is that?

The restrictions are understandable. One does need the time first to inform oneself, and there are options for those who are clearly more advanced.

I'm a little annoyed that access via Tor is not allowed, but I understand and accept it.

Hi folks,

I'm Alan and new to this forum (and also new to the Bitcoin mining business).

I have to say that I don't like the "newbie restrictions" since I have an urgent request in a specific thread. A solution would've been a verification email with a code in it or something like that, or a captcha code for these so called "newbies".

Anyway, I guess I have to wait four hours.

Cheers,
Alan

or ask here in a new thread.

I try to be respectful and informed.

Due to a mass of trolling, only established posters are able to post in non-newbie sections. You are considered "established" if you have spent 4 hours online and have made 5 posts (new topics or replies).

If you have really good posts, you can post a request for preemptive whitelisting in the appropriate topic.

Also:
- Newbies cannot upload their own avatars.
- You must have made one post in order to send PMs.
- You need 10 posts to put a link in your signature.

Note that it may take up to 10 minutes for your PM or posting permissions to be granted. (The system automatically checks every 10 minutes and promotes people as appropriate.)

I seem to only be able to reply and not post?

Never mind.  I never would have looked for a post button where this one is located.  My bad.  I did not realize how old this version of SMF was.

Please tell me how to set up a solo mining. Tried a lot of instructions, but it did not work, the last error that pops up is a hardware problem, what is it who knows?
