Okay, I don't like being restricted in which areas I can post, and I also understand the need to control spammers

Can't agree with the usefulness of the restrictions in this form. The time spent on the forum - it is possible. But to limit the message, forcing them to write - this is absurd. You can think of the forum is the secret sections. Or spammers can't write in the newbies section. In the end, it forces the newbies spamming, no more than that.

It won't deter trolls; they are persistent folk. What it might deter is casual spammers who have thousands of forums to cover with their spam. It does, however, come at the cost of forcing people to make idle conversation before making useful contributions, as Integ points out.

Doesn't the restrictions only inhibit humans? I'm sure bots can be programmed to get passed the restrictions...

No, you see most spam bots will try to sign up and then post their spam immediately, and instantly fail. You could program a spambot to make four nonsense posts in the newbie forum and lurk for four hours, but that's more effort than most spammers would be willing to take. Why, they'd have to actually read the forums they're trying to spam, and that's too much effort. Remember, they have thousands of forums to spam to "get rich fast by spamming".

I made an account so I could post in another subforum. Been lurking and mining for a year and I don't really consider myself to be a noob. This is silly

Due to a mass of trolling, only established posters are able to post in non-newbie sections. You are considered "established" if you have spent 4 hours online and have made 5 posts (new topics or replies). If you have really good posts, you can post a request for preemptive whitelisting in the appropriate topic. Also: - Newbies cannot upload their own avatars. - You must have made one post in order to send PMs. - You need 10 posts to put a link in your signature. Note that it may take up to 10 minutes for your PM or posting permissions to be granted. (The system automatically checks every 10 minutes and promotes people as appropriate.) Sensible system - like it!
