Well, can I say that I'm still pissed of stuck in "newbee" and make this count as a post, because I have nothing to say here but this, and where I have something to say, I can't... and look no emoticons ;o)

btw,.. @Gilgamesh how is that immortality thing going?

can we make this count as no. 4? it's nonsense but it's a post. If Gilgamesh answers we can make a nonsense conversation.
stupid rules induced by stupid ppl makes other ppl do stupid post. ;o)
The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.
Advertised sites are not endorsed by the Bitcoin Forum. They may be unsafe, untrustworthy, or illegal in your jurisdiction.

I beleive that the waiting time should be reduced to like 3 hours.

The waiting time is silly though, if I post primariy from a mobile device (as I do), then it would be weeks before I reach 4 hours, because I can't have background tabs running.

It will take you weeks to read this site for four hours? What do background tabs have to do with anything?

Its good to have a new persons place and restrictions. With all the press that bitcoin has been getting as of late it can only help to shield. (And by press I meant mainstream - when you're mentioned on tech talk shows and NPR you're going to be getting a lot of traffic)

Then you're simply making it a pay-to-use website, which is probably not the best for the community. 4 hours and 5 posts is not a huge amount, it really shouldn't take you that long if you actually plan to be active in the future.

I don't think it would make it pay-to-use website since:
1) deposited money could be returned back after the person actually spends 4 hours and submits 5 meaningful posts (if he/she is not a troll).
2) it could be just an option for those who don't want to spend 4 hours for posting 5 meaningless posts Smiley

I seldom post on forums if at all, usually I spend most of the time just reading. This system doesn't work too well for me, to actually rack up 5 posts might take me fair bit of time.

I think it might be good if the tech support subforum didn't have such a restriction.

Restrictions are really helpful, but if you visit the forum mainly for reading, and only once - two per day to write a message, then it can go into the problem: (

If that rises quality of content, lets be it. Quality over quantity.

Kinda annoying not to be able to ask questions early on but I suppose rules are there for a reason, and at least it will stop spamming all over the forum from members saying "Post 1", "Post 2, 3 to go" lol

The site says: Due to spam, non-established users can only post in the "newbies" section."

I would like to argue that this is a blatant lie. If we go by spam defined as defined by wikipedia, that is, paraphrased, "unsolicited bulk messages sent indiscriminately", then a quick peek at the reasons given for not whitelisting new users will show that something is amiss: A common reply is "try to resolve your issues in the newbie section". This reply directly admits that the message appears to be a legitimate issue. Otherwise, why would it be responded to at all? Thusly, people are being acknowledged as not spam while still being denied normal usage of the forum.

Maybe the restrictions are in place to prevent trolls and random clowns from making stupid posts, but again, what do we have beyond a "try to charm the moderators" game. I've seen 1 line 'take my word for it' posts whitelisted, so surely the trolls can get in if they wish.

All we got here are power hungry mods (yeah, that's a  new one for an internet forum, I know), an unfriendly and cumbersome greeting for new users (and even year long lurkers, such as myself) and a chaotic newbie section swamped with all sorts of random messages.

Surely this can be done better, and in the interest of the good of bitcoin it really should be.

I would think some kind of human test would do better at stopping spambots. The current restrictions as it is would just make things difficult for newbies. Not all of them would realize there is a restriction in place and might just think the forum's screwed up, and indirectly inferring that so is bitcoin. It wouldn't stop a real spammer/troll from registering a couple of accounts, post a few nonsensical posts, then leave his machine (or go troll/spam elsewhere first), with a couple of browsers and auto refresh plugins to chalk up the 4 hours before firing away.

I have to somewhat agree and can't believe how exceptionally difficult it is to post. Many of the the issues with the programs usually say to come here if you have an issue with said programs but it is very difficult to do if you can't reply.

This. Spam, in this case, is the more general case of a bunch of people always asking the same questions, or trolling.

but again, what do we have beyond a "try to charm the moderators" game. I've seen 1 line 'take my word for it' posts whitelisted, so surely the trolls can get in if they wish.
More goes on behind the scenes than you realize. In a whitelist review, every post the user has ever made is checked. Their post requesting whitelisting is only a small part of it.

All we got here are power hungry mods (yeah, that's a  new one for an internet forum, I know)
We take every whitelist request seriously...

(and even year long lurkers, such as myself)
...but we can't read your mind. Nowhere in your request did you say that.

Surely this can be done better, and in the interest of the good of bitcoin it really should be.
We agree. However, this is the best we can do for now.
