Creating a Bitcoin client that fully implements the network protocol is extremely difficult. Bitcoin Core and some of its derivatives are the only known safe implementations of full nodes. Some other projects attempt to compete, but it is not recommended to use such software for anything serious. (Lightweight clients like Electrum and MultiBit are OK.)

Long time reader but finally joined now. The restrictions are a bit annoying though, is there really no other way around spam? (Like some decent anti-bot captcha for the first x posts instead of just denying everything except the newbies section)

Am down for rules like this.  Hopefully my questions will have been answered by the time I can venture to the rest of the forum!

I'm mostly interested in an economic and political perspective of Bitcoin and hope to get some opinions from various users.

Only 5 posts, only 5 with all those topics in the newbiesection you would think there is something you can reply to, so don't spam here.
There is no reason for that.

Maybe it would be better to have a posting rating for each forum, making the one that have the highest chance of being spammed require more posting.

Just my $.02 so my posts aren't wasted.

Have a look at the first page of this thread where it says:

Note that it may take up to 10 minutes for your PM or posting permissions to be granted.

Is the 4 hour restriction a continuous login or 4 hours since you registered?  Huh
