It's very annoying the Lightning Network conmen are trying to pretend LN while bitcoin has empty blocks vs bitcoin with full blocks that are uneconomical to use would look anything remotely similar to one another.  It's a testnet and they're launching spam channels everywhere that have pocket change in each one and try to pretend each 'line' represents 'decentralization'.  In the real world, the way it's designed incentivizes you to put all your money in a single channel connected directly to a well-connected bank, so the exact opposite of how they try to trick people and portray it as.

The testnet lines are meaningless, only incentives matter.  Empty channels that nothing flows through is not a valid measurement of anything, just a visual trick.  The real measurement of LN decentralization is basically what % of a user's net worth is all in the same channel and how few channels would actually be moving all the volume in the real world.  For example, do you think someone is going to have 20% of their net worth in a channel connected to the grocery store then 5% to the pet store, yada yada?  Hell no.  They're not going to pay money to open all these channels and then for no reason split all their money up into non-fungible pools that can't be combined to spend on larger purchases.

How the fuck would you mobilize your cash to invest in anything if you constantly have to keep it in 100 different channels too?  It's not feasible for savers, spenders, for anyone really.  The only way it works at all in a non-clown car manner is having all your money in a single channel connected directly to a bank.  So in other words, LN is completely worthless and is identical to the current banking system.

In fact I found you can easily and freely send messages (and files under 10Kb) through Blockstream satellites with https://blockstream.com/satellite-queue/ (Broadcast a Transmission) by easily "paying" testnet BTC via testnet LN with this small testnet LN webwallet : https://htlc.me

In fact, you can send messages/voice/files through satellites for decades, with ham radio. For free.

But only for licensed members...

Quote
These satellites can be used for free by licensed amateur radio operators for voice (FM, SSB) and data communications (AX.25, packet radio, APRS).

But only for licensed members...

The license has been free since 1901. Massachusetts 8th graders were building their own gear to transmit and receive in 1904. You can purchase inexpensive modern equipment very easily, no soldering involved.

{added to} Make no mistake, I think it is great that Blockstream satellites make this available. By the same token, it is not new tech.

Since I assume there were no satellites in 1904 are you sure you have the good license?  Roll Eyes
And AFAIK you need to pass a test to get it...

I am very sure I have the correct license. I was doing this in 1984. I transmitted on 432 mhz right hand circular polarization, and received on 2 meters left hand circular polarization. It's easy and cheap now. Sorry you don't want to learn or study. The license has always been free.

In fact I had a CB station in my car many years ago, but yes I am a small noob in the radio amateur matter.

CB is 11 meters (measured wavelength, from peak to trough), it's near the ham radio 10 meter band. Ham radio is much better, and it's not that hard. My significant other is not a techie, and she just passed her Technician license test. I was also sending packet data around the world before Amsat satellites with a TI-99/4A computer on a Kenwood TS-520, with just wires strung in trees for an antenna.  Seriously, check it out. There are very probably free classes in your area.

EDIT. bad link.
Look for it here: https://www.hamradiolicenseexam.com/which-exam.htm

I got into ham radio about 25 years ago, and got the Extra licence.  Back then you had to be able to "copy" (read) fast Morse code.  I think it was 25 words per minute.
Anyway, the Morse code requirement has been dropped.  Now all it takes is studying some technical information and passing a test.
Most of the people on this forum are probably geeky enough to do that without discomfort.

Anyone heard of these Tangem cards?

https://tangem.com/

$5 per card needs to come down but the tech is quite cool. Just verify on your phone that there's money on the card and you can exchange bitcoins offline.

VB1001 DX Century Club (confirmed contacts, with 100 countries, obviously on HF) is certainly a great accomplishment. I don't know what CFM: 312 is.

Roach, despite distracting and less than admirable personal qualities, you get some things right.
When I first looked into Lightning Network, I was thoroughly underwhelmed.  Nothing has happened to change my mind.
LN is a kludge.

Looks interesting! Would like to have some more details, for example can the bitcoin be made ‘digital’ again by the holder of the card?

LN is a kludge.

I still connect directly via manual routing to every website I go to.

I don't just connect to the closest node on the network and have my traffic propagated through the network.

I wish the Internet and Lightning Network worked that way but they don't. You have to connect directly to each place you want to spend money.

CFM: 312  Wow! Assuming lots of 20 meters? 40? Or during a sunspot cycle, 10-15? I used to have a quarter-mile wire, 160 was fun, but not reliable DX.
