Japan is still occupied by the US. More than 3% of country's territory belong to the US military. The US army in Japan is bigger than the army of the natives in terms of men and weaponry. Occupied countries will be your economic competitors only to the extend you allow them to be your competitors. China is independent country. Japan is not. Neither is South Korea.
