Baby boomers are getting old and retiring thus the rate drop.

1946 now 77
1947 now 76
1948 now 75
1949 now 74
1950 now 73
1951 now 72
1952 now 71
1953 now 70
1954 now 69
1955 now 68
1956 now 67
1957 now 66. this june i qualify for full social security if i retire.

these numbers will continue until 1964 are 70 or 2033

so downward pressure will not end for 10 years.

The amount of people born 1946 to 1964 is huge and they dropped out a lot shrinking participation.

Take a 66 year old this june he can go to full social security. Or work at Shoprite union job checking groceries.

I know four or five checkers that stopped the last few years they would have worked longer but with covid-19 and being able to quite they did.

Some quit in 2020 and did nothing (or off books) till they can retire. A lot of people are doing this.

have to slap buddy again and again.

there are 39 million people in the 60-69 year old slot

https://www.statista.com/statistics/241488/population-of-the-us-by-sex-and-age/#

54 million 60 to 74

21 million 60-64

18 million 65-69

15 million 70-74

even if you only count 60 to 66 as ‘the eligible’ work force

its over 12 million and lots of them are idle waiting to 66 to get full benefits.

EDIT: wow, it looks like late boomers numbers exceed the earlier; I thought it is the opposite.

Bottom line, in US, many companies simply fired workers over 60 before (hence the idleness between 60 and 66 where many live on savings and whatnot). It did not happen to me because I am currently at a job where employers do not do this, but I know quite a few examples from friends and family. I guess, at 60 they were making almost twice as much as a newly hired 25-30 year old would cost...and they were less "dynamic" so to speak.

The funny thing, now employers are trying to hire older workers again because they are anecdotally "more reliable"-don't come to work late and don't get pregnant (sorry, ladies).
It's almost a trend.
