If you are newbie i would suggest you to firstly analyze the market and when you do you will have the same answer .
There are more interested people and investments in bitcoin then any other alcoin such as ethereum  . I guess we must choose the best for getting the best profits even if you don't do anything with it and just hold it . For that reason , bitcoin is the best for any newcomer in the world of bitcoin.

Ethereum is good coin that is mostly uses for new ICOs and also it has good market capitalization and demand also for new business but no competition with bitcoin because Brands are starting to accepting bitcoin, there are so many investors like to work and business with this latest Digital bitcoin currency and there demand and hype and rate is increasing day by day that are showing bitcoin future will be great and awesome.

they are both good ys agree with taht also but for the secure where you can have a positive way on how you can have more profit proven and tested if you are trying to choose bitcoin if you have only one choice but if you are profitable to choose both of them bitcoin and ethereum then you should try because they are both and profitable.

You must hold bitcoin for long term.

Trade altcoins in very short term (1 week - 2 weeks). Never love an altcoin. If price increase more than 200%, sell immediately and do not regret if it goes higher. It will always down back to base. Always! So, never love an altcoin. Never imagine how good it is, how bright future it is, how awesome it is. Those are bullshit.

Altcoins are born to be dead. Only bitcoin live.

Well for those who can't afford to buy BTC there is a good option with them in the form of ETH but ETH is gonna take too much time to give you a good profit. It will give an average profit but if the same amount is invested in the BTC the profit will be much higher in a very little time as compare to the time and profit of ETH. BTC is my favourite coin and will remain for it's high return on investment.

I will advise you to open a wallet on either blockchian or  coinsbase which I believe are reliable, you then need to buy Bitcoin from either a local Bitcoin exchange or directly with your card from coinsbase if leaves in US, UK and the rest of other countries that such services are available. After buying Bitcoin is then advisable for you to hold for a period before you sell and later you can invest in altcoins.
