It will depend on how much time you are willing to dedicate to monitoring your investments, if you do not have too much time then it is better to have less coins and to have coins that are more solid and that have very few chances of disappearing, but if you want to dedicate yourself fully to this market then it is entirely possible to have many coins, I have seen examples of people in the forum claiming they hold 50 to 100 coins.

For example, if your portfolio is worth only 1000 dollars, it would be pointless to spread that out over 20 coins.

I got your point on that but for me,as much as possible saving many altcoins is better because the more you save the more chances of profit you can get. On the other hand,the risk is crucial in terms of researching and monitoring the token. Handling things like in crypto is very different compared to real life situation in a normal way of earning. You always have your patience and determination to carry and that is a double time than usual.
