Walmart Files Cryptocurrency Patent Joining Facebook’s Libra in Challenging Bitcoin

The uproar caused by Facebook’s proposed Libra coin hasn’t died down yet, and a similar intention by retail giant, Walmart has emerged.

A filing published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office at the beginning of August reveals that Walmart filed an application since January 29 2019 to patent a method for creating a coin that runs and records transactions on a blockchain. In the application, Walmart Apollo LLC requested to patent a digital ledger similar to the one powering Bitcoin.

Despite CEO Claims, Dash Isn’t Really the ‘Most Used’ Crypto in Venezuela

https://www.coindesk.com/despite-ceo-claims-dash-isnt-really-the-most-used-crypto-in-venezuela?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=coindesk&utm_term=&utm_content=&utm_campaign=Organic%20

“Dash is the most used cryptocurrency in Venezuela,” said Ryan Taylor, CEO of Dashpay, as he stood on stage last May during CoinDesk’s Consensus event.

This statement has been repeated time and again by Dashpay, hinting that crypto is taking off in Venezuela’s economy.

But after investigating the true uptake of the crypto in Venezuela, this statement – while bold – isn’t quite true.

In 2018, 80 percent of merchants in Venezuela reportedly accepted dash.

Indeed, local sources told CoinDesk that only a small number of projects and merchants are actually using dash. For example, Fabiana Arreaza, owner of the startup Chiringuitos, told CoinDesk
that customers rarely use the crypto payments option.

“We’ve been accepting dash for two years. We currently haven’t received any clients using dash to pay for their events. They’d rather use bolivares or dollars,” she said.

The same bolivares thats subject to severe hyperinflation ?
The same bolivares thats subject to capital control limitation measures set by its government ?
The same bolivares that you can find in the gutter of the streets in Venezuela, because it failed as a currency ?

Venezuela’s currency so worthless that locals weave goods out of it!
Link : http://en.protothema.gr/venezuelas-currency-so-worthless-that-locals-weave-gods-out-of-it/

Quote
Hyperinflation led to the money being useless

Street vendors in Venezuela are weaving baskets from banknotes after 13,000 per cent inflation rendered them practically worthless.
Inflation in the oil-rich Latin American nation has seen the economy spiral out of control, with its currency the Bolivar losing 87 per cent of its value against the euro.
Cash is worth so little there bank notes are often seen littered on the streets.
But street seller Wilmer Rojas has found a use for them.

The 25-year-old is selling origami-style handbags, purses, hats and baskets – all made out of money.

Mr Rojas, a father-of-three, said: ‘People throw them away because they are no good to buy anything.
‘No one even accepts them anymore.

I find it hard to believe the statement in the article from a local source that they rather use their own local currency (bolivares). Then there is the mentioning they rather use dollars, which is
of course hard to get when your local currency (bolivares) is in a hyperinflation state, has strict capital control measures and with the USA having imposed additional sanctions on Venezuela.

Link : https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-08-05/not-even-dollars-can-save-venezuelans-from-inflation-s-wrath

Quote
Carmen Rojas used to be one of the fortunate Venezuelans who lived off a steady flow of money from relatives abroad, with $150 from her two sons providing enough cash to last a month.
Today, she’s lucky if that amount gets her through the week.

Luxuries like trips to restaurants and the movies are long gone. The 65-year-old homemaker gave up meat and now mostly eats arepas -- a corn patty staple -- with lentils and beans. The owner of
two stray dogs, a third of her monthly intake is eaten up by them alone.

What i do believe is that our Dash merchant numbers may decline even more after an audit, which i find not much of a surprise as globally the merchant listing numbers were already
declining in the statistics for awhile now --> https://discoverdash.com/stats/

This all does make me wonder if Bitcoin is doing any audits on their reported figures of adoption world wide (not just Venezuela) and how credible Coindesk's "local sources" really are.
What this Coindesk article reminds me of is that of a quickly written article intended to discredit Dash with regards to adoption in Venezuela, while neglecting to take into account the hyperinflation
thats rampaging there.

CoinDesk is a subsidiary of Digital Currency Group (“DCG”). DCG invests in cryptocurrencies and has ownership stakes in a number of blockchain startups, listed here.

(Not to be confused with Dash Core Group, also DCG)

If you wonder why coinbase exchange lists zcash but not dash. Look to Digital Currency Group. If you wonder why positive Dash news is ignored by the coindesk new site, yet negative news is published look to Digital Currency Group.

Coindesk claim to act independently of their owner, Digital Currency Group. Believe that if you may.

That was really interesting. I guess thanks to whoever loaded the network with these transactions. You made Dash stronger.

So was it a planned stress test of Dash network or some 3rd party tried to attack it?

Quote
it appears that the artificial load on the Dash network was either a stress test by someone outside of the Dash developer community or was an attempted attack.

Either way, i think it provided Dash Core Team a good opportunity to observe the impact and make adjustments where necessary.
Which is more difficult to simulate on Testnet, due to the limitations of Testnet.

For those interested, i created a little poll in the altcoins discussion section :

Is Coindesk biased in its reporting on altcoins ?
Link : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5176229.0

Could be interesting to see how other crypto projects feel about this.
Please vote if you are interested. Also i'm looking for some clear motivations in the comments of that poll.

Re crypto use in Venezuela - the classic case in such circumstances is "bad money drives out good", meaning that people would be more likely to dump something they perceive to be losing value rapidly (Bolivars) and to hodl something they perceive to retain value (Dash, for example). So, while merchants might accept Dash, most people would rather hang on to it than give it to a merchant if it is a useful store of value. It's usually the junk money that is in mass circulation, not the "good stuff". It's early days yet - see what happens once merchants stop accepting Bolivars.
