Hi, I bought into drk back when it was .002ish, glad to be on board and am very excited.  Have two questions though if someone has a second...

1) If darksend is anonymous and untraceable, how do I prove I made a payment to someone who says "they didn't receive it"?

2) What's to keep the NSA or similar from hosting their own master node (or 10, they have the budget) and logging transactions that come through to defeat the anonymity?

Thats actually quite a good point!

This level of greed and hysteria is always a sign you're in a bubble. Reminds me of some of Bitcoin's bubbles.

The drop down from here is going to be sharp and very quick. Rises like this are never sustainable.

I will quote this in 2 weeks.

That's what I thought too. Believe me, I've sold on significant dips.

However, look at the price chart. There have been multiple pumps, unlike Bitcoin or any other coin. It appears as though someone is continuing to invest in this coin in big volumes. When the coin price dips down it is bought back up again.

As for the first question, it's the same as cash.  You need to get a receipt.  If you lose cash or have someone steal it from you, you've lost it.  There are no guarantees with cash.  You can quote the transaction ID, but you can't prove your wallet had anything to do with the payment.

For the second question, this is one of the reasons why the masternodes are so expensive.  Make it difficult for an entity like the NSA to get funds for such a project.  But even if they did, Masternodes do not work like mining in that all you need is 51% of the network to take it over.  Masternodes  will have several levels of mixing, and the more levels of mixing, the more nodes you need to control.  1 level, you need to be the masternode, 2 levels, you need 2/3 of all masternodes, 3 levels, you need already such a large proportion of the Masternodes that when you get to 5 levels, you need practically all of them.  If You get up that high, if the Government tries to buy so many masternodes, they'll be driving the price sky high, making it more and more difficult for themselves to even pay for them.

I'm not explaining this very well, others have done a much better job of it, but it's a feed back system.

And now, Evan has something else up his sleeve.  I'm waiting for it because I want to write a layman's explanation on Darksend.  I can't wait, it looks like this week we'll get more information!

This is as old as business, the transaction is anonymous for others, an outsider wont be able to see it in the blockchain, that is the point. The buyer knows the coins left his wallet and can show to which address he sent it and the seller needs to prove that he didnt receive an input for that amount on his address at a certain date.  If you are buying a tshirt you probably dont need much protection, if you are buying a house sign a contract with the seller on certain terms period.  The point is others wont be able to see what you are doing and know every detail of your financial life.

On the other hand, 10 masternodes are not enough to deanonymize transactions, masternodes are selected randomly each time. How are you going to know that the masternode you own will be selected for a particular transaction? Also if you want to deanonymize an important amount of traffic you would need 80 to 90 percent of the nodes but that means you need a huge amount of DRK driving the price through the roof and basically leaving you monitoring your own transactions because you own a huge percentage of the coins. This is well thought out, and for RC3 evan is adding a new level of security where masternodes wont know what is going on so in like 2 months this wont even be an issue to discuss. You need to inform yourself more about how this works, it is truly remarkable.

Masternodes, please restart!

I've noticed some nodes popping in and out of the masternode lists. I'd like all of the masternodes to follow these instructions to see if the problem gets fixed

1.) stop the daemon
2.) update to 10.8.6 if you haven't
3.) add "maxconnections=200" to your configuration
4.) wait ten minutes (it MUST be ten minutes! This will allow the masternode election entry to propagate)
5.) start the daemon and turn on the masternode

Friendly reminder  Cool

For the masternode pros..
How much do I lose by waiting until after next week to setup and configure my masternodes?  They are a good additive to mining longterm, but roughly how much Dark will  lose by not having them up and running for about a week?

Also, are there any latest guides to follow?  I've read through the original guides.

He generates an address for you, you send him the money and you then check his balance in the blockchain for that specific address that the money arrived.

Quote
2) What's to keep the NSA or similar from hosting their own master node (or 10, they have the budget) and logging transactions that come through to defeat the anonymity?

When Evan started it, I don't think NSA-proofing was the goal. I don't know if it was even conceived as possible. The goal was to provide anonymity that would probably be good for 99.99% of the cases but perhaps beatable by an "adversary" as the NSA if they put the effort to it because they would be able to monitor networks, devices, emails, pretty much everything.

As the heat started rising with Anonymint's constructive criticism, and later on with Bytecoin ring signatures, the perception cultivated was that "Darkcoin's anonymity is weak". By "weak" = not NSA-proof, which is interesting because right now, as they all are, there is no single solution providing NSA-proof levels of anonymity (Bytecoin and clones not excluded) by itself and without extra measures being taken. Zerocoin would be the only solution to do that, but it has other issues.

As a sidenote: If you have to be the NSA to "crack" the anonymity, for all intents and purposes the solutions provided are good for 99% of the cases - like people not wanting their transactions being public, or citizens of some country (other than the US which lack NSA resources) who want to evade their government crackdown on cryptos.

Anyway, the solution that Evan thought to counter the issue of a large adversary controlling a number of nodes (beyond the negative incentive of 1000 DRK requirement), was to use multiple DarkSends through multiple nodes. This would require NSA to not control a few or the majority, but something like 90% of the network in order to be able to map the transactions. Because if the transaction hopped between, say, 10 nodes and 2 were not controlled, that would be an issue of losing track of the money flow.

I think (haven't analyzed it - the specs change all the time) this solution was not eventually implemented in DarkSend (but I figure it should be an option if the alternative fails). Evan has now thought something different to do with this, and we are all weird on what it is. We'll find out...

Whoever manages the darkcoin.io website might want to change the spelling to "denominations"...
I'm somewhat amused by the syllable "demon" in "demoninations", though  Cheesy
