Hello Everyone! Today, September 29, 2014 Darksend was completely open sourced. This means that we’re no longer going to be using the “release candidate” labels and we’re considering Darksend to be stable enough to leave beta. Also, the development community can come together to improve and refine Darksend, build backends that utilize it and enhance the Masternode technology adding even more functionality. We’ve been busy the last few weeks working on development plans for the next six to twelve months and we’re happy to announce these today. Masternode Hardening To build a network that can withstand attacks, the masternodes must not publish their IPs. To do this we’re going to utilize a new multipath communication technology. This will add another layer of privacy to the system as it will allow users to communicate with the network securely without exposing their IPs and will also hide the identity of the Darksend mixing nodes making it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for third parties to spy on users information. It uses multi-path routing so users can send more than one encrypted message using different routes on the mesh network for redundancy. This will allow us quick communication, robustness and anonymous two way communication. The diagram below shows the new system in action: We’re currently building the foundation for instant transactions and other secret projects that we’re not ready to announce yet. We’ll see you on testnet soon! The Darkcoin Development Team Lot's of respect to eduffield for setting the code free!! Thank you for all your hard work in the past and the future!

Bad luck Ed. And to think that I know of some people running hot masternodes on spot instances. Lets hope they've got backups Are people still running hot masternodes? Why? What's the issue with hot nodes? As long as your password is strong enough and your firewall is configured right nobody is going to touch your coins... At least until the next episode of the HearthBleed and Bash bugs.

Have you ever tried running 70 remote setups? It's a maintainance hell... I was curious how that worked out. More so, the payouts if you actually send from each node, or if you just pay the appropriate payouts from a personal stash for the nodes that got paid.

Have you ever tried running 70 remote setups? It's a maintainance hell... I only realised how much easier it is to manage hot nodes when running testnet masternodes. Still, I'll stick with cold for now. I'm quite a way from 70 masternodes.

What's the issue with hot nodes? As long as your password is strong enough and your firewall is configured right nobody is going to touch your coins... At least until the next episode of the HearthBleed and Bash bugs. So what, as long as the wallet encryption holds ... It's not that simple. If you run with a password protected wallet, you need to ensure that there is no bash history or ps listing that may store (and hence give away) your password. There are ways to configure your MN to minimize this risk, but as another posted on here, don't ever make any mistakes, not even once. If one day you forget to use darkcoind masternode start 'head -1' and instead, being in a hurry or some such, use darkcoind masternode start MYPASSWORDCUZIMINAHURRY , well, 'ps -ef' is going to show your password. It goes without saying that heartbleed and shellshock show just how fragile our systems of security really are. If you choose to run a hot masternode, I would suggest leaving a conspicuous, non-passworded wallet with some loose change in it (maybe some Dogecoins LOL). If the loose change ever moves, you need to move your 1000 DRK to another wallet ASAP.

Also, vertoe has taught me a few tricks that make it easier to be secure in hot mode (thread on DCT I think).

At least until the next episode of the HearthBleed and Bash bugs. So what, as long as the wallet encryption holds ... Last time I ran a "hot" masternode (there wasn't a remote option at the time anyway) I had to enter my wallet key for starting it (my wallet daemon had to sign messages with my 1000DRK private key). That means your wallet key theoretically can be stolen. However, I haven't try to run a masternode since months, so may be my information is outdated. It depends on what you mean by "hot masternode". This wasn't the case during the first few beta versions. (I closed my masternode and moved the DRK back to the exchange circulation after that change occured. Not strictly becasue of but including that change.)

Yes, I quoted vertoe earlier in my response, but I'm sure I didn't reveal anything he doesn't already know. I think the loose change 'hacker bait' wallet is pretty good idea though. You know your system's compromised when the loose change is gone.
