I disagree with that, you don't have to remove one thing to do another thing. If they think that current competitions are a great marketing then that is awesome, they should keep doing that, however they could add something on top of that as well without removing the competitions. If competitions are a way for them to both make money AND do marketing at the same time (which normally doesn't happen, you spend money on marketing) they don't have to quit that, just add something on the side.

Promotions and bonuses and even free spins or deposit bonuses with rollover requirement is not a bad addition for any casino at all, people would have to claim them anyway so it would be optional and not forced. while it can be an instrument it is not something that all of the sites must do or are doing

Reality is they can do whatever type of marketing they want and we can do nothing about it.
