This is alarming since due to the Chinese's new year,  more Chinese are traveling overseas and an easy way to spread the virus globally. The US, Australia, South Korea, and some countries are confirming the presence of this virus o their country. Though it is a milder version or strain of coronavirus but its hazardous to people with compromise and a weaker immune system like seniors and children. Better to stay at home indoor for now than to mingle with many people whom you did not know like malls etc. Means of transfer is by contact, and airborne when someone affected sneeze. Wash your hands always, avoid contact to eyes, mouth, nose, etc.

If people think this is bad, wait until they hear about influenza

Since October 2019:

13,000,000 – 18,000,000
flu illnesses

5,900,000 – 8,500,000
flu medical visits

120,000 – 210,000
flu hospitalizations

6,600 – 17,000
flu deaths

Not the first time a virus arose there due to poor practices. SARS came about because they were raising chickens over pig pens allowing the bird flu virus to jump specie (and pigs are know super virus incubators). Now this "Novel" coronavirus is suspected to have originated from fruit bats... sold in a food market that also carry several exotic animals for you know what. Bats are vectors for rabies and ebola, when would people learn to stop eating them?

This is alarming since due to the Chinese's new year,  more Chinese are traveling overseas and an easy way to spread the virus globally. The US, Australia, South Korea, and some countries are confirming the presence of this virus o their country. Actually even before the lockdown there are already Chinese abroad that are showing symptoms. This virus have an incubation of at least 3 days so it's very possible for people to pass airport screenings negative.

And at the time there seem to be little alarm so there might not even be screenings. IMHO these should be all mandatory whether there's a reported outbreak anywhere or not. This is a globalized world, microbes can travel half a planet in just a matter of hours on people or even cargo.

This is worse than they are letting on. I think it was yesterday when they locked down Wuhan. You know it's gone bad when you quarantine an ENTIRE city. Was watching an interview of tourists there that managed to get out.

Even before the lockdown the government has already stopped all public transportation - buses and all, and these two chicks had to find someone willing to drive them to the next city. There's probably some tourists still left stranded in there.

If you live in Asia it's probably wise to start wearing masks when going outside considering the number of Chinese flying into the area. In my country alone they are sending back at least 100 people that were directly from Wuhan. Not to mention the local Chinese population in this region that is already in China and would fly back home after the festivities tomorrow.

oh that virus will benefit china's youth a lot, freeing them from pension costs of their elederly large generation

Sounds mean but absolutely true if this primarily affect the elderly. People say the Black Death is what allowed Europe to transition out of its feudal stage. (It caused a labor shortage, which drove up wage.)

With Influenza it has been here for quite some time now and there is already treatment for it but with the Coronavirus it's very new and people tend to get scared of new viruses which comes out of nowhere and are very deadly as a matter of fact. Chinese authorities should be commended for enforcing a citywide quarantine on Wuhan with a population of 11M people just to stop the spread of the virus.

Not really.  I'm not saying the disease is not deadly but its definitely of less concern than something that is already highly infectious, deadly and fully spread like the flu.   Its just about sensationalism in the media and fear-mongering that appeals to xenophobic bias against China.   There are new strains of the flu every year that are much more deadly and aren't covered by the flu vaccine but they hardly get any coverage.  Like, how many of the people criticizing Chinese for eating "strange" animals are actually vegan?  How many of them know or care about the amounts of antibiotic resistant bacteria that come off of animal farms into the human population and kills thousands each year?

Diseases only seem get a lot of scary coverage when they come from the global south.  Remember ebola?

That's interesting and let's start with the begging.

I am not a medic but this is the opinion after living for some years in an area where diseases were spreading fast because of the hygiene.

This virus is not common for humans and it's the 5th outbreak in 30 years and people starting researching them more. What's interesting these viruses developed a lot in the last hundred of years after they started attacking the animals.

Right now we see that this virus specific doesn't have a big spread speaking that is out for 1 month and 2 weeks. Now we as humans we have eating patterns: eath pork, beef; we're being told that these are good for us. But what happens when we try to eat something different from totally different areas?

Like let's try out this new bat that's cming from Cambodgia or whatever. For the first few times there is no problem, but in time it happens to develope and he learns how to atack our body, it becomes aggresive.

Sadly, there is no quarantine now on Earth anymore, and there was a strange case last week, when someone took the temperature of a person with the virus and afterwards he used the same machine to use it for another 100 people; this is how the virus is being spreaded.

What's the solve? We don't know yet. Speaking that virus has an incubation periode of 48 hours at least and first symptoms come out after at least 14 days, it's hard to say.

Now, in my country the grandmas are: look son, on tv the woman has a problem with her hand, it hurts her-> she has cancer. maybe i also have cancer...

The news that you posted in the thread are same as my grandma. For now it's hard to find the virus specifics as it manifests same as a usual cold, and later on maybe pneumonia.

I am curious to see how it is going, Ebola is not over but the world is changing so fast the views and stops looking for the better solutions.

Cheers,

M.

She's crazy like a fool.

This has the potential to really get out of hand during the flu season if it is difficult to tell the difference between this and the flu.

China was not forthcoming during the SARS outbreak and some are saying that China might not be telling the truth about the number of deaths and illnesses in China. A friend of mine who used to live in China said that he heard from his friends in China that those in the quarantined city are being threatened with 7 years in jail if they try to leave.

As usual, you show facts, logic and science are not your strong suit. Because people are reporting on an outbreak and it began in China, it is automatically xenophobia? WHAT?

As this is a novel virus, the true fatality rates are not yet possible to be known, but some how you are smarter than all of the worlds epidemiologists combined apparently and have the real scoop. This virus, on the LOW END possible fatality rate based on existing numbers is SEVERAL TIMES more infectious than regular flu MINIMUM. Based on China's past history of fudging these numbers as they did with the S.A.R.S. outbreak, these can not be considered reliable. Other estimates put the fatality rate as high as 38%. No there aren't new strains of flu every year more deadly than this. That is fucking retarded. Additionally antibiotic resistant bacteria is a totally different subject. We might as well talk about how dangerous it is to drive and compare that. As I have said before, you belong no where near "educating" anyone.

Resistance is a totally different subject and one we in the us should be more worried about than something that has killed a few dozen old men in china.  Its not like we can't focus on both but at the moment these are two public health issues where one is blown up in the media and one is barely talked about.

Don't you find it interesting that the one taking form on the other side of the world is getting more attention than the one killing 35,000 Americans each year.  I have to push back because I see people worried coronavirus will kill them but they don't even know what antibiotic resistant bacteria are.  Thats a bit backwards.  I'm not trying to downplay coronavirus from a public health perspective but from an american perspective its about priorities.  Theres a long pattern in this country to worry about things happening everywhere else in the world but here so I need to fight it on every front.

Why would we focus on something that has affected one person and completely ignore something that has affected millions?  Could it be because thats what the meat industry wants us to do?

Hey, all the fake news sites keep saying the sick are turning into zombies!

https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1232814/Coronavirus-horror-China-virus-Wuhan-zombies-epidemic-video
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/10808633/coronavirus-wuhan-zombieland/

Can't we just drone them all and make it a robots vs. zombies apocalypse? The big ones can zap the walkers, then we can make little mini-drones that fly around and vaxxinate everybody. Cheesy

I think that we cannot avoid a pandemia from this virus.
It was firstly inspected in a city with over 11 million people so it is inevitable to eliminate it now.
I wish I will be wrong about that but I'm afraid I will not.
