it took us longer than a week and lots of debugging to come up with the new implementation. It took some serious brain skillz too.   And no, we don't intend to open source this.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea that mining with a proprietary GPU miner closed to other devs is a good thing. I can't really seem to do it.

Maybe I'm just a naive ideologue , but the open nature of crypto currency in general is it's primary allure -to me at least. Open source and peer reviewed is best all around for any aspect of this crazy mining endeavor.

With Scrypt ASICs loudly clanging the death knell of impending profitability decline for massive GPU Scrypt farms. A new coin sporting an eco-friendly (by comparison) algorithm shows up just in time for summer. An 'every mans' mining coin with low power consumption that levels the play field and furthers the goal of widely distributed hash rate. But would that necessarily be the case if I have to pay a premium for a proprietary mining app?

So to C&C I ask: why is this a good idea to anyone other than yourselves?

and to the larger community I ask: does anyone else see an issue and if so what are the implications.

I missed the part where you had a constructive suggestion for how to pay for weeks of work by two professional and highly skilled developers.

I have a list of options, but before I share them, I'm serious - what's your proposal in a way that you think is best for the currency and gives those devs a reason to do their work?

You could argue that they just shouldn't improve the state of the art, but that's not right -- it just means that someone with a private optimized version would be that much more easily able to control the network.  So, what's the best way?

And, btw:  An "energy-efficient" algorithm from a family that was a SHA-3 candidate means only one thing:  There's not a good implementation yet...

Not entirely sure how to respond to this except by saying Im offering a 20k bounty for AMD and thats 0.2BTC on a better day. Id hope anybody developing for GRS would see then potential growth here and enjoy the celebrity such optimizatiosn would make. Also I hope others will add to my existing bounty or create incentives of their own.

It seems to me the argument you make could apply to almost all bounties for all optimizations of new coins.

Obviously I hope devs feel properly remunerated for their time, even if not today then in a month

I'm an opensource programmer and I program and mine for fun. I get money for programming on my job.
But I also think that everybody is free to ask whatever they want for their work.
There are "professional and highly skilled developers" who program for free (like myself) and bad programmers who ask for money :-D

I don't think we intend to ask for mining fees or anything like that. But we would like to see nVidia users have a bit of an advantage in the mid term at least. Because if everybody mines faster, there is no benefit for anybody.

Hence we would like to take the time to make nVidia specific optimizations (e.g. I intend to make heavy use of the warp shuffle feature for Groestl which does not currently exist in OpenCL). And when needed we may also decide to do a binary only release - requiring us to find workarounds to stay in compliance with GPL terms.

Hi all!

Just wanted to give you an update on what's coming up shortly...

* Paper wallet for GRS (based on bitaddress.org)

* Some experiments to find the theoretical maximum mining speed across different devices: Win64, Win32 (is it possible to make it as fast as Win64 or not?), ARM (to be tested on Google Nexus 10), iPad (iPad3 & iPad Air tests) and... HTML JavaScript (Emscripten cross-compiled output).

Please note, that it is not going to be a miner. Yet.
It'll be just a simple application that will generate lots of GroestlCoin hashes per second and print out the speed.
Once completed, I'll upload all sources to GitHub for public access.
(Hashing code will be based on SPH library)

srcxxx (amongst others) has recently mentioned PoS and maybe switching after a few months. So…

Idea

1.keep mining PoW for couple more months / summer end
2. then move to PoW/PoS combo
3. Move to combo would coincide with a possible rebranding / new logo / PR blitz

Bounties.

This has to be sorted out. I dont officially represent the coin but those of you who know me know Im passionate and dedicated to it.

so in addition to any official bounties I pledge the following

5k for a new logo (to be deemed by consensus better than the existing one)*
10k for 33% or more performance boost to CPU miner (64 or 32 bit)
20k for 50% or more performance boost to AMD miner
25k for ARM miner (code to be made available. payment after verification)

* I like the idea of using the Ø symbol in it.

Others are welcome to pledge themselves (I will track the pledges) and if this is acceptable people's words will count till such time as the Bounties are formalized. Anyway my word is good and I've have paid all Bounties I have offered in the past. Ask instacash for example.

the ARM miner you can consider my personal project but i believe in it. Without getting into a long spiel I would simply point out that Googlecoin would run on ARM. ARM procs are getting a lot faster a lot quicker.

If this coin went PoW/PoS I love the idea of ARM chips helping to secure the network in years to come. In no time the public will only carry ARM. The landscape of mining will be very different in no time at all. The ARM implementations exist and it should be doable

OK, first results...

NOTICE
This code is completely unoptimized and is single-thread. Also, it is not a miner. It just does 10 times of 1024 hashes using GroestlCoin algorithm and prints the time it took.

Win64: 160KH/s
Win32: 60KH/s (so yes, having Win32 version with same speed as Win64 will require some tweaking)
Chrome: 1.5KH/s
FireFox: 12KH/s (that's because FireFox supports asm.js, I believe)

Again, this is not optimized in any way! This is just proof of concept. To show that it is possible.

Next, I'm planning to compile for iPad and Android and see the speed results.

After that, we will move on to speed optimizations.

For developers:

Please see https://github.com/srcxxx/grshash. It has dead-simple code.
Perhaps you can use it as a basis when tweaking CPU miners.
For example, I noticed that our CPU miner is not using SPH library. And so it's single thread speed on my PC is 240KH/s in Win64 (vs 160KH/s with SPH in my little grshash project).
So there is quite a bit to explore here.
