After numerous deaths in football stadiums, Brazil passed a law in 2003 outlawing alcohol sales in stadiums. FIFA demanded that Brazil allow alcohol sales at the World Cup because Budweiser, a major World Cup sponsor, was the "Official Beer of the FIFA World Cup", a role it had played since 1986. In response, Brazil passed a law paving the way for alcohol sales in the World Cup, nicknamed the "Budweiser Bill"

I'm curious to see if something similar will happen now in Qatar 2022, since Budweiser is again sponsoring the World Cup, and Qatar has said they won't allow selling alcohol inside the stadiums...
I believe the rules are going to be relaxed by regulators when the time comes. There is a lot of pressure on this matter and low resistance on the other side... It seems some VIP foreigners are already scheduled to be allowed to consume alcohol:

Quote
As part of the relaxed rules, alcohol will be available to fans in stadiums in Qatar, but so far only to those purchasing hospitality packages.

Jaime Byrom, the contractor behind the premium offerings, told RTE: “It is our expectation that people will be able to [drink].

“We expect that, depending on the decisions taken by others – we will of course always comply with whatever regulations, whatever laws are decreed – certainly at this point in time we are planning to be in a position to serve alcohol in our hospitality programme.”
Anyway, people shouldn't get too much excited about drinking during the games, because alcohol in Qatar is sold at a premium due to it being heavily taxed:

Quote
A pint of beer in Doha, where group stage matches will be played, costs around £10 due to the Muslim country invoking sin taxes on alcohol.

Yet organisers are also working on subsidising drink as well as making sure it is more readily available for fans during the tournament.

“Alcohol is not part of our culture,” Nasser al-Khater, the chief executive officer of the 2022 World Cup, admitted in 2019.
Interesting that alcohol isn't part of their culture, but when being sold overpriced for their own financial benefit it's fine. Cheesy

LOL.... a pint of beer for $12 sounds so cool.  Grin

Anyway, I can understand their point of view. Qataris spent billions of USD in bribing the poor nations for hosting rights. Obviously they are concerned about the ROI. On top of all that, there are no distilleries or breweries in Qatar and they need to import the drinks from other countries. BTW, are they going to legalize other recreational activities such as gambling, smoking weed.etc? If they want good returns to their investment, then they should allow these activities as well. What about a 900% sin tax on marijuana?

Qatar is a Muslim country and no alcohol is consumed there because Allah does not allow it... Much less gamble, smoke ganja or use prostitutes... Most likely this will all be provided illegally... So the prices will be very high because in Muslim countries illegal things are very risky... But anyway, a $12 beer is overpriced! Grin

These rules are only for poor people. I have heard about rich Arab sheikhs partying in places such as France and Macau, using drugs and alcohol without any limit. But at the same time, these guys will behead anyone who indulge in such behavior back home. I consider Turkey as an ideal Muslim majority nation. Alcohol, gambling, as well as prostitution are legal there. They know how to balance between religious restrictions and modernity. And that may be the reason that they are one of the most advanced Muslim countries in the world at this point.

I do not think expensive prices will stop football fans from getting alcohol, especially beer. 10-15 dollars is nothing for a person coming from north america or europe just to get fun and watch their favourite team (or nation). I am coming from a country who has very good football culture (Türkiye) and people always always drink alcohol at special days, like important sports matches and similar events. Qatar won't be able to stop it unless they ban it.

~snip~

In Australia a pint at a random bar is basically at that price.

And in a few countries in Europe as well, like Norway for example.

Everything is getting so expensive!

Gambling and alcohol should be fine at some degree, but doing drugs is a more serious matter, with risks for individuals involved on this kind of activity to be taken to the death sentence in Qatar, or 20 years of imprisonment  plus a £21,349 to £64,047 fine on the best hypothesis.

And that is not all: foreigners were adverted to stay away from smugglers and drugs users, otherwise they might be punished as well for their friends' acts.

Fans Who Smuggle Cocaine Into Qatar World Cup Could Face Death Penalty

If they want good returns to their investment, then they should allow these activities as well. What about a 900% sin tax on marijuana?
Oh, don't give them an idea like that one, otherwise they might like it, upgrading and boosting their sin taxes regulations immediately. Cheesy

Wow, that is crazy. I can buy a pint here for 1,60$. I would never pay that insane 12$ for this same pint, even if they sprinkled gold or diamond's particles in my glass.

Although Qatar is a Muslim country, a large part of its GDP comes from tourism. And so they do a lot of religiously forbidden work to attract European tourists. And so Qatar cannot be compared to other Muslim countries. Countries like Pakistan, Turkey and Indonesia observe their religious restrictions fairly well.

Qatar is difficult to compare with other countries. It may be known to the general public for its wealth, but there is also a lot of poverty. Those images are of course not quickly shown to the outside world. I think that the football players in December will also get little or nothing from it. It was a very unfortunate choice to hold the World Cup there. However, there are advantages, a large crowd in that country is looking forward to the World Cup. And the home crowd will also be cheering Qatar on at their matches.

I disagree with you there. Qatar is not dependent on tourism. A large majority of their revenues come from the exports of LNG. And as far as I know, they are the leading exporter of LNG in the world. Some of the gulf nations are defendant on tourism. One example is that of the United Arab Emirates. But Qatar doesn't have any such restrictions and that is one of the reasons why they haven't fully legalized alcohol. On top of that, the ruling family of Qatar is much more conservative when compared to the ones in neighboring nations.

Without being biase on my choices, I think most of the Affican nations a likely not going to make it past group stage. The few that would would likely get eliminated in the round of 16. Ghana most especially seems to have been placed in a group of death with Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea, no bad feelings but its game over. From the way I see it, they are the least in that group although, not to mind  the best doesn't always wins but most times, they do and this is world cup.

Anyway  if I'm to pick those I project to lift the trophy and other consolation prizes, I'll go with;
1. Germany
2. Belgium
3. Brazil
I'm sure they've got a few flaws but, that's my pick.

agree.
The chances of African countries qualifying for the World Cup will be difficult to get to the last 16.  we can see the match schedule of opponents from African countries is quite heavy.  senegal vs netherlands, portugal vs ghana.  it is very clear that the opponents for the two African countries are very heavy when viewed from the statistics.  but I prefer to favor two countries.
germany
argentina

Two favorite countries that will become champion candidates.

FIFA as the highest sports body in world football is showing direction as the host of the 4th annual event where Qatar has prepared a stadium to make the world cup successful this time, but a series of controversies have begun to blow where the Qatari government itself prohibits various prostitution.alcohol parties and free sex. where it is very close to western culture but the Qatari government implements that there should be no violation of law in the country but until now the statement issued by the FIFA cataract government does not dare to dispute this because they have been bought with money, and until now we also have not heard protests from FIFA officials regarding the application of the law

First world cup is going to be played in this region, so conditions are going to have very important role for all teams which team is going to adopt this can go through easily for this I am going to support teams from South America because these are having same conditions instead of European countries but still nothing is sure about this even because any result can happen and any team can knockout as we have good experience in last world cup which was held in Russia.

For me Brazil, Argentina, Germany and France are teams to watch as they are usually best and have quality players but Belgium and England are also not bad with any upset can occurred and these can take place for last round matches.

Qatar is going to be a good host for the world cup. There are a lot of rules but those are for the best. And I am someone who likes rules. Because with rules, we stand for something. Without rules we become very tolerant. So, I think it is not going to be a problem for the world cup.

It wasn't necessary starting a new thread for this discussion, so i had to bring it here since it still partains to the world cup.  I came across a tweet

And i have been giving it a lot of thought whether Mourinho could be right or wrong?

What do you think?

Will it be racial to subject African players to play only for their country of origin as many think? or can this actually give Africa a chance to win the world cup?

If this has been the case, Players like Mbappe will not be playing for france but Cameroon where he has origins, Lukaku will not be playing for Belgium but Congo, Bukayo Saka, Alaba & Dele Alli for Nigeria and not England, William Carvalho for Angola and not Portugal, Memphis Depay for Ghana and not Netherlands etc Imagine the quality they would have added to these African teams.

@Rruchi man  I think that this would be definitely unfair for these players. Because it is up to their choice to play for their origin country or the other one. For example we can see many players in France squad whose origin are completely different normally. But they have chosen to play for France and they must be contented with this situation. I assume that nobody forced them to choose that national team. This is the same for non-African players too. As a result I think that FIFA shouldn't force players to play for their origin country. This can lead to many problems.

This can lead to many problems.

It is a tricky situation. Because personally I feel it is not fair that African nations are not losing their best players to the rich European teams. Imagine how well Guinea could have performed at the world cup, if Paul Pogba was playing for them. Imagine Romelu Lukaku playing for Congo and Kylian Mbappé playing for Cameroon. Algeria would have done wonders if Karim Benzema was playing for them. So I agree to a certain extent what Maurinho said. But forcing the players to represent these countries can be unfair, if they really want to play for the European sides.

After all, naturalized players were players who had the right to choose as long as they had bloodlines from their parents. Even so, the state cannot force it either because again, every player has the right to choose. As long as they don't break the rules and there's no coercion, then I think it's still fine and I think it's very rare for a player to be forced to play in a certain country.

Qatar is going to be a good host for the world cup. There are a lot of rules but those are for the best. And I am someone who likes rules. Because with rules, we stand for something. Without rules we become very tolerant. So, I think it is not going to be a problem for the world cup.
Well lets see how Qatar manages the big crowd - I am sure they are hiring people too for the jobs.
I wish if I had got to know about earlier I would be working and updating all of you on the forum. LOL Very sad on my part.

Anyway  if I'm to pick those I project to lift the trophy and other consolation prizes, I'll go with;
1. Germany
2. Belgium

I think that neither Germany nor Argentina will play in the final. Germany did poorly at the last World Cup and European Championships. Argentina last played against Germany in the final in 2014. I think this year's final will be different. I remember when Argentina won the Netherlands in the semi finals in 2014, I think that if it happens again this year, the Netherlands will qualify for the finals.
