Some crowd funding is taking place.  I believe an OpenBazzar type application is being worked on right now by a member here funded by just shy of 10k XMR of donations.  Once the DB is implemented I think we will see a lot more services pop up based on Monero.  I know of at least one person who has a dice type gambling website ready just waiting for a more friendly blockchain implementation.

You are right but fullypony mentioned 'chicken or egg' problem in investing process: DB implementation needs money right now core devs have not.
That because I think we should start donations PRIOR to DB is ready.

Look, even missives regular manner is broken, although core devs must NOT to do any in deadline manner. Just write missives regularly... They don't!

You need to read. Missives will be released on Mondays when there is something worth writing about. Now say you are sorry to the team.

Let's put the Missives aside by just repeating what we said in the year-in-review Missive -

Quote
Our first Missive was put out on Monday, June 2nd, 2014, and has been instrumental in collating and bringing together various little snippets and pieces of work and threads every week. In the 30 weeks from that first one till the end of the year we put them on pause for 4 weeks during the attacks in August, and took a 2 week break at the end of the year. The remaining 24 weeks had 21 Missives in them, giving quite a bit of coverage and keeping our userbase as informed as possible. Some Missives are easy and only take us two or three hours to put together.

Some Missives are substantially harder due to time constraints, dependencies, research (see: this Missive you're reading, for instance;) or just the sheer amount of stuff that is going on. In total, the 21 Missives we put out over the past 8 months contained nearly 16 000 words over 689 sentences!

I think to claim they're "broken" is a little silly, given that we've put in over a hundred completely unpaid man hours just on the Missives in the past 8 months.

I don't disagree that marketing is weak...but what is there to market? Accepting Monero is very difficult, spending Monero only recently got easier with the release of the web wallet. Using Monero on a server required several gb of RAM (with nothing like walletnotify or blocknotify), and using it as a standalone client is even worse.

Crossposting:

Monero Client .NET is back with a new release!
v0.39.0-rc.3

Hooray! It's time for me to present a new release of my project. I would like to dedicate it to the core development team, who have been working so hard lately that they broke all the older versions of my client. Cheesy

There are still many things to be improved, but at least, for people who already have an account since v0.38.1, this release will provide stability along with usefulness. I've also tried to implement account file creation, but it seems that the core team has even changed the format of accounts, thus, new account files are not compatible with my software anymore. I'll resume to the newly-appearing issues later, but let's see what was improved in 2015's first .NET client release:

  • Started to utilize the latest stable version of bitmonerod
  • Added indonesian translation
  • Fixed all the shutdown-related bugs (including one which made saving the blockchain impossible)
  • Fixed a menu localization issue

Plans for the future
As you may have already heard, Microsoft is making their .NET Framework's source code open for the public, thus, giving a chance for porting .NET applications to other platforms in the future. That is also a reason behind returning to the development of Monero Client .NET.

I would like to announce a roadmap for those who are still curious about the next things to come.

First of all, I have to tell that v0.39 releases have featured a lot of new technologies in the background. It was the first set of releases to support the "daemonized" bitmonerod and rpcwallet, which are still in a beta development state by the core team. That's the main reason why there wasn't a release of my client which could be labelled fully stable. As it seems to take some time to advance to these new technologies by the core team (merging them with new developments like the embedded blockchain DB or the new account seed generation mechanism), I decided not to continue the development of v0.39 releases, but build a stable v0.40 which returns back to the usage of - the latest - simplewallet and the non-experimental version of bitmonerod.

Further on, this project consists of 2 parts: one which is responsible for the communication with the background workers' RPC interfaces, and one which renders the GUI, utilizing the API subproject. My idea is to separate the 2 subprojects in order to provide .NET developers an easy way to interact with the RPC without the need of implementing JSON data decoders by self. This may even encourage more people to help in project development, and would make it easy to create robust block explorers in ASP.NET (Microsoft's web development platform).

As I have already mentioned sometime before, I'm 17 years old, so I have to study now in order to acquire a great career later. I also have other programming projects to work on, but I do all these things for my own entertainment in my free time. Please bear in mind that it's not easy to keep up with these extra activities I do besides school, so developments will be slower than during the summer.

Enjoy the new release, and donate some XMR to the core development team who made this project exist! Smiley

You are entitled to your oppionion and since this is a community coin; funded by big donations. With that said what is offered is much more than what any other coin can say for themselves.

You need to read. Missives will be released on Mondays when there is something worth writing about. Now say you are sorry to the team.

I hope this was sarcasm. No need to apologize for opinion, it may not be popular opinion, but hes entitled to it.

fluffypony, did you think about a croudfunding company? On kickstarter, indiegogo, etc?

Crowdfunding doesn't really work that well for this unless it is massive (some of the altcoin ICOs over the past year for example) -- enough for steady ongoing development for a consistent period of time. Much of the work is specialized and it paying someone to do a specific project just means you pay for a lot of learning curve, maybe a little productive work, and then they go on to do something else to pay for their next meal. This leads to a lot of loss-of-continuity problems. Two steps forward, one step (or maybe 1.9 steps) back. It's just not productive.

I agree with what was said a few posts back about just be patient with steady quality volunteer-oriented development and wait for BTC to go up and XMR to go up and then funding will be a lot easier. At a few million market cap expecting a lot of funding means people spending 50% of their XMR holdings on development. That's silly.

The time for a "Monero industry" with well-funded startups and core development will (hopefully) come but it isn't now.

Specifically on the topic of DB, the work continues, there is testing and improvements on #monero-dev and github very regularly (as in almost every single day). Steady progress. Success is now within sight.

.Net was supposed to be platform agnostic on release so I wouldn't hold my breath. Wink

BTW great to see you helping out still. Smiley

Let's put the Missives aside by just repeating what we said in the year-in-review Missive -

So detailed annual report! I vail the bonnet in sign of respect to you!

Just confused, is bitcointalk.org the main discussion place for Monero yet? Or do you recommend to completely migrate to forum.monero.cc?

I think to claim they're "broken" is a little silly, given that we've put in over a hundred completely unpaid man hours just on the Missives in the past 8 months.

Your detailed annual report shows clearly you has much more expenditure than income.
Sure all people here want just to help you and core devs. Monero is raw, yes. But Monero is WORKING prototype right now.
So it is necessary and sufficient to attract investors right now!

9000 unless you get it raised by request to support.

This is a touchy topic as far as I can tell. From what I gather, the core dev team wants us to migrate over to forum.monero.cc . Some have tried, but there were bugs in the forum software - but they have been worked out. I'm over there every once in a while.

Someone above presented the counterpoint that because monero will obviously be "the next" bitcoin, or the anon coin that stands alongside bitcoin, we should stay here.

I just go where the talking is. I personally like the software at forum.monero.cc , but whattaya gonna do

They haven't done a payout in several weeks, so I stopped using them. They only took me for about 10 XMR.  I hate all the scams that give the Crypto community a bad name! it's pretty sad!

Hi,

This is my small contribution the the community. There were some complaints we only had one block explorer so...
Its a little crude but it gets the job done.

It has even got an API Wink (Monero Blocks API)

It relies on Atride's moneroclub node while the DB is not out.

Hope to hear your feedback. Gimme your luv.  Tongue
