These are old wallets from way back before last summer. I don't remember how much exactly is in them but I think one has 1000 XMR. Can a wallet be to old to open?

I think you need to rebuild from keys file using an older version of binary, maybe 0.8.8.4, and then it should work on newer versions as well. Either that or wait for next release, this wallet formatting issue is being addressed now in #monero-dev, and should be corrected in next release.

This is a bad time of the year to be price watching since many people are selling whatever they have to pay for their Christmas holidays. People in America are converting crypto to fiat to buy presents and such. Things will pick up after the holidays. Those that ride out the storm will likely be rewarded. Monero is my GIFT. Card with the word seed to a loaded my.monero wallet. Why give socks when you can give privacy?

Buy Monero as a gift for Christmas. Because privacy is the most precious thing in a world of spying and mass population control.

Anyone else thinking we've hit the bottom for Monero?
I know I took this oppurtunity load the boat!
LOL you will sink! Imho crypto is taking a blow on each and every front. Averaging down is the key factor. Only invest what you can afford with a shrugging. This may, or may not become the investment of your lifetime. Seriously, Bitcoin has proven it can achieve the unimaginable, but that requires to fulfill certain prophesy. Being anonymous internet money, mine able at home on average hardware, being decentralized and open sourced. Looking at those four bullet points, I recognize that Monero fits in a lill' bit better then Bitcoin even. Matter of fact, Bitcoin dropped out of everything except they did not moved closed source still, but that might happen last. I made my stance. Two coins right now. To victory or perish!

Can someone more knowledgeable on mining and hashing algorithms tell me whether it's truly not possible to develop Cryptonight ASICs? Is Monero cpu-mineable because the math, or because it's not worth it to develop specialized hardware yet? In other words, if Monero had a 5 billion dollar market cap, do you think it would still be 1 CPU 1 vote? CryptoNight relies on random access to the slow memory and emphasizes latency dependence. Each new block depends on all the previous blocks (unlike, for example, scrypt). The algorithm requires about 2 Mb per instance:
It fits in the L3 cache (per core) of modern processors. A megabyte of internal memory is almost unacceptable for the modern ASICs. GPUs may run hundreds of concurrent instances, but they are limited in other ways. GDDR5 memory is slower than the CPU L3 cache and remarkable for its bandwidth, not random access speed. Significant expansion of the scratchpad would require an increase in iterations, which in turn implies an overall time increase. "Heavy" calls in a trustless p2p network may lead to serious vulnerabilities, because nodes are obliged to check every new block's proof-of-work. If a node spends a considerable amount of time on each hash evaluation, it can be easily DDoSed by a flood of fake objects with arbitrary work data (nonce values).

A large botnet has finally been pulled off monero. Hash Rate: 14.67 MH/sec Difficulty: 924886095
Seems like botnet click fraud is more profitable than mining monero..

Stitch the words into a pair of socks? Nooo don't hang 25 socks onto the chimney, or you will have to spend the whole holidays sorting sock permutations

Can someone more knowledgeable on mining and hashing algorithms tell me whether it's truly not possible to develop Cryptonight ASICs? Any ASIC is possible. Let me give an oversimplified example, to demonstrate the clear theoretical (though not necessarily practical) feasibility of doing it at all. Intel CPUs have floating point hardware. CryptoNight doesn't use floating point at all, so you could build a clone of an Intel CPU, get rid of the floating point, and have a slightly smaller/simpler chip that would cost less to manufacture, and probably use a bit less electricity. You could call this an ASIC, in the sense that no modern computer can really function without floating point any more, so it would be almost useless for regular programs, at least Windows certainly wouldn't run on it (someone ambitious could still make a Linux soft-float build). You wouldn't really get much performance increase, but you could, in theory, get a price-performance increase and some power reduction. There are certainly other components of the CPU that aren't needed for CryptoNight, and could be removed as well, to similar effect. I estimate that something in the neighborhood of 30% of the chip area of a desktop CPU (more for server CPUs that don't have a GPU) is directly being used for CryptoNight. So at best in this (somewhat unrealistic) model, you could reduce the chip size by 2/3. Or possibly you could build a specialized chip of similar size that would hash 3x as fast. A while back dga (early XMR miner who did most of the optimizations of the CryptoNight code, and computer science professor at CMU) once estimated there would be roughly a 5x gain from ASICs. You have to trade that off against the R&D costs, economies of scale (massive manufacturing volume) of just using standard CPUs. Is Monero cpu-mineable because the math, or because it's not worth it to develop specialized hardware yet? In other words, if Monero had a 5 billion dollar market cap, do you think it would still be 1 CPU 1 vote?
At a 3 billion market cap it is plausible there would still be no ASICs for CryptoNight. But it is possible there would be. It is difficult to say. How much is that hypothetical 5x gain worth relative to one time R&D costs and the expected useful life of such a chip? We can be pretty sure that the performance and price-performance gain from a CryptoNight ASIC would be much smaller than for SHA256 or even Scrypt. We don't know the exact parameters until someone tries to build it.
