Major News: https://getmonero.org/2017/05/17/disclosure-of-a-major-bug-in-cryptonote-based-currencies.html

Monero chain controlled by devs and unnafected.

great Jobs from devs, this issue was handled as professionally as possible. also monero maybe made some friends in the process by playing fair.

Bravo for the well handled issue that would have been devastating to XMR altogether should such information got into the wrong hands at the wrong time.

Very proud of the development team.

Don't want to rain on the parade... and this is (most likely) very cool news indeed.
But is there some detail/proof forthis assertion?:

I can imagine the extent of exploit/damage that this may have done to XMR as a whole.
Compliments to the Monero Dev!

the major proof is that the nodes that contain the fix are able to sync up with the network.

however, im pretty sure they will soon be more to come.

Correct. Every node contains the code to check for the exploit now so successfully syncing ensures that it hasn't been used.

I'm trying to understand how this news about CryptoNote bug relates to the recent massive Bytecoin spike.

How does a fatal flaw unaddressed in the coin lead to a massive price INCREASE, maybe engineered by insiders with this knowledge?

And why would they do that knowing it'll probably crash hard as soon as the news hits?

Or is it unrelated, coincidence (yeah, right)...

Whole thing just seems back-asswards, WTF?

Anyway, it's really a damn shame that shit isn't short-able today by us plebs out here, LOL

Great job XMR devs, this is the last nail in Bytecoins coffin.

When Ethereum screwed up with the DAO farce last year its price dropped by what, (half?) overnight. The fact that Bytecoin is still being traded, is still being pumped, and is still being bought is a measure of how insane the market has become. Strange times indeed.

Also I don't understand why we got this massive spike UP today on this news, but *now* it's retraced back down again by about half the spike up already?

WTF... who in the fuck would be SELLING OFF their Moneroj on this news?

To me, news like this ought to trigger a spike up and Up and UP, over even several DAYS of extended rally, as news spreads & people figure out what it means!

Maybe that'll still happen, who knows, but just more "WTF" material in these-here Strange Days, Indeed... Tongue

P.S. {Edit, a couple hours later} Whoops... there's a little POP!  And HoneyPony's back up over $30: is it September already?  LOL

The trend is down as XMR/BTC has been making lower lows on 12 hour chart with a couple of spikes up. It is tough to trade right now and will be until price starts making higher highs and higher lows. I don't think XMR/BTC has found a bottom yet but that is just me.

Maybe someone on polo has been accumulating Bytecoin for some time now (there was a recent smaller pump), and they somehow got wind of the coming disclosure and decided this was their last chance to dump their bags ahead of this news release. Or something. Who the fuck knows? Maybe just polo casino shenanigans as usual.

Yes this is a joke. XMR isn't doing sh*t and every coin around it is rocketing upwards.  I think lack of a mobile wallet and the weak Windows wallet is just hurting it and there are newer, "hotter" coins that are shooting upwards.  But definitely missing out on the party being in XMR right now.

What will be entertaining is watching all of those rocketing coins around "us" explode when their pumps finish and then gravity kicks in.

These "hotter" coins are going to be just like a hot potato. Don't get caught holding it when the music stops.

Fireworks will be for the patient, popcorn will be free as well.

Stock up.   Cheesy

I had that thought as well, but then BTC started to drop and XMR dropped just like the rest of the alts around it (except for crazy XRP, of course).    Oh well, I'm not selling my XMR but the past few weeks have been tough.   It just hasn't moved up at all in BTC terms, although it's currently up about 50% in the past two or three weeks in USD terms, so I perhaps I shouldn't be greedy and complain about that too much.  But it is has still grossly underperformed crypto, in general, over that period.   I know it doubled a few months ago, so maybe it didn't have as much growth "left in the tank".

I dunno, but it's frustrating.  I'm not selling though, and at least it isn't as grossly overvalued as something like DASH or XRP, of course.

I just want to say hello!!   Cheesy
I have mined and traded XMR since a couple of years ago and was quite concerned to read some of the  FALSE NEWS related to Monero and cyber attacks.
WHAT A BUNCH OF BULLSHIT!!!

Good to see you all supporting your coin.  You have a great and strong community!
Will probably buy some soon!

EDIT:
Someone needs to the set the record straight and have those guys publicly apologize.   Angry

Are you using escrow?

I suggest anyone dealing with risto to use a reputable escrow and have him pay for the escrow fees if any.

I suspect that many of your creditors would accept XMR at the market rate for debt repayment. I cannot speak for the other creditors but I certainly would. So there is no need "die Preise in dem Prozess zu zerstören".

Edit: Not only does this eliminate the need for escrow, it also eliminates risks associated with Bitcoin transactions not confirming due to the fixed 1 MB blocksize limit in Bitcoin.

Concerned that blockchain bloat will lead to centralization? Storing less than 4 GB of data once required the budget of a superpower and a warehouse full of punched cards. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/87/IBM_card_storage.NARA.jpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punched_card

That would put a godly dent in the buy book at Polo. Why not just go short and crash it?

We can make game of it. Smiley
